Release list
FolderSkin v0.1.14
Added
- FolderSkin's official collection. Community opens on Official: skins made by
FolderSkin that belong to no pack, free to use under MIT with credit to FolderSkin. Search
them, sort them by newest or by name, and open any one to see it large. The collection grows
over time, with no limit on how many skins it holds. - Take one skin, not the whole pack. Use on an official skin, or on any skin in a pack's
viewer, downloads just that picture, checks it and saves it in your library, picked and ready
to apply. Add still takes a whole pack and keeps it up to date. A check mark shows which
skins are in your library already, on a pack's skins, its card and the official grid. - One skin from the website. Each skin in folderskin.app's gallery can open FolderSkin and
take just that skin, as a pack's Install button takes the pack. - Official skins in search. Typing in Community lists the official skins that match at the
head of the matching skins. - The collection from the command line.
folderskin-tools collection addprepares pictures
the waypacks makedoes and adds them to the collection, andcollection checkchecks it.
packs checkincludes the collection, andpacks catalogpublishes it.
Fixed
- A small pack's preview keeps its folders square. In Community's gallery a pack of one, two
or three skins showed tall, narrow folders, and the third of three sat to one side. Every folder
now keeps its shape, a lone one is centred, and the panel behind them is as wide as the card.
Downloads: macOS (Apple silicon and Intel) .dmg, Windows -setup.exe or .msi, Linux .AppImage, .deb or .rpm for x86_64 and ARM64.
FolderSkin v0.1.13
Fixed
- The x86_64 AppImage starts for every user. Its launcher could be run only by the account
that owned it. Started by anyone else, for example in a firejail sandbox, the AppImage stopped
with "Permission denied" before a window opened. The ARM64 AppImage wasn't affected.

FolderSkin v0.1.12
Added
- Export a skin as any kind of icon. Export icon, in a skin's ⋯ menu, saves it as an
ICNS for macOS or an ICO for Windows with every size in it, a PNG or a JPEG, an iconset for
Xcode and iconutil, an iOS app icon, the favicons a website needs, or a new folder wearing it.
Each is drawn as its preview shows it, to use for an app, a website or another computer. - Press a symbol into a folder, from the command line.
folderskin glyph logo.png ~/Music
presses a black-and-white picture (a logo, a symbol, a letter) into FolderSkin's folder, as
the composer presses an icon in: a deeper shade of the folder's colour, with a lit lip below
it.--colourfills the folder with a colour of your own,--depthsets how deep it goes,
and--emptyleaves out the paper. - Icon files from the command line.
renderandglyphsave the same kinds, all but the new
folder: by the name's ending (.icns,.ico,.iconset,.appiconset,.png,.jpg) or
with--format, which doesfavicontoo. A JPEG fromrenderis on white now. - Shell completions.
folderskin completions zsh(or bash, fish, PowerShell, elvish) prints
them for your shell.
Changed
- Crisper icons in lists. The small sizes that list and column views show, 16 to 64 px, are
now each finished on their own. A folder's or a drive's straight edges land on whole pixels,
the pale line that ran just inside the outline is gone, and a picture or lettering on the icon
is a little sharper, with no halo round it. Every skin gets this, the finished pictures in
community packs too. From 128 px up, icons are exactly as they were. - The folder panel's button on Windows is a round one, like the library's search and filter
and in line with them: at the panel's top left while it's open, and at the end of the same row
once it's closed, beside the window's own buttons. It was a square button among those.
Fixed
- A new skin shows on the Windows Desktop at once. Explorer draws a folder from what it read
of it up to a minute before, so a skin applied soon after another left the Desktop showing the
one before, or a plain folder, until something else drew it again, such as applying a skin to
another folder. FolderSkin now has Windows read the folder again as the skin goes on, as
Windows' own Change Icon does, and the new skin shows within a second or two. A run over
subfolders does this for its folder, and draws the folders inside it again a minute later, as
it does a folder whose own icon came back with Remove custom icon. - A second run over a tree reaches every folder on Windows. Runs over subfolders took the
mark Windows gives a folder with an icon of its own for hidden, so they passed by every folder
FolderSkin had skinned before: a new skin reached only the folder itself, and Remove custom
icons left the folders inside wearing theirs. - The window moves, minimises and closes with a dialog open, on Windows. Settings, the
subfolder chooser and every other dialog left the window's own buttons out of reach, and the
first-launch welcome had none. Every dialog now keeps them, and a strip to move the window by,
above it. With the folder panel closed, Community's header moves the window too. - An update leaves no folder half done on Windows. Installing an update closed FolderSkin at
once, even in the middle of a run over subfolders. The run now finishes the folder in hand
first, as it does when you quit. - AltGr types a backslash on Windows. On German and French keyboards AltGr+ß and AltGr+8
folded the sidebar or closed the folder panel instead. - Windows gets its own words and choices. Design your own says Shift where it said ⇧ and
measures Windows' icons in pixels, and Include subfolders mentions app bundles only on a Mac.
The emoji picker leaves out countries' flags, which Windows draws as two letters, and the file
pickers no longer offer HEIC pictures, which only a Mac can read. The window no longer opens
looking like a Mac's for a moment. - Print and find stay out of the way on Windows. Ctrl+P, Ctrl+G, F3 and Ctrl+F no longer open
the web view's print dialog, or its find bar over the window's own buttons. - The command line's
apply, revertandglyphrefresh Explorer. On Windows they ended
before the refresh they asked for went out. folderskin ai themepaints without lettering. The Local Model often wrote a folder's
name on the picture it painted for it, and misspelled it ("GAMEES", "Budget- truchcher"). A
theme now asks for no words or letters, since Finder and Explorer show the name under each
icon, and reads a name likeweather-appas the words "weather app". On 16 test folders,
misspelled names went from 5 to 1.
Downloads: macOS (Apple silicon and Intel) .dmg, Windows -setup.exe or .msi, Linux .AppImage, .deb or .rpm for x86_64 and ARM64.
FolderSkin v0.1.11
Fixed
- Quitting is over at once. After FolderSkin had read a folder on a network share, macOS
could keep it running for over a minute after the window closed, and the Dock showed it open
with nothing to show. It now leaves the Dock the moment you quit, stops reading the share, and
finishes the folder a run has in hand so none is left half changed. - A neon sign comes off its wall. On Windows, Linux and Macs before macOS 14, a free icon of
a neon sign kept the dark wall inside its tubes, lit by their glow. Now only the tubes come off
the wall, as Preview lifts them. - A painted shadow goes, even from a JPEG. A grey wash painted under a watercolour subject
stayed on it when the picture came as a heavily compressed JPEG. It goes with the backdrop now,
as it does from a PNG.
Downloads: macOS (Apple silicon and Intel) .dmg, Windows -setup.exe or .msi, Linux .AppImage, .deb or .rpm for x86_64 and ARM64.
FolderSkin v0.1.10
Added
- Skin a drive. Drop a drive on the window, or pick one, and the folder panel says what it is
("External drive", "USB drive (F:)", "Network drive") and shows every skin drawn on that kind
of drive, with the skins made for drives first. Apply skin gives the drive its own icon: on
the drive itself on a Mac and on Linux, and for its letter in Windows' own settings, so nothing
is written to the drive there. Include subfolders gives the folders on it the skin as
folders. The startup disk on a Mac and on Linux, and a drive that's read-only, can't have an
icon of their own, and the panel says so before anything is tried. - A drive shape for every kind of drive each system shows, drawn by FolderSkin: nine on the
Mac, from the startup disk to Time Machine, six on Windows, and ten on Linux, from a USB stick
and a memory card to a server and a RAID set. Each one still reads at 16 px. - Every folder and drive in its parts, in Design your own. A drive's case, face, port and the
rest, and a folder's tab, back, paper and front, are in the layers list under the design, and a
click on the canvas picks one. Give a part a colour of its own, its light and shade kept, make
it see-through, hide it or remove it: a red USB stick with no label, a folder with a yellow tab
and no paper. Drag the whole folder or drive to move it, a corner to size it and its knob to turn
it, the design on it going too. Saved, the skin is the icon on the canvas. Left as it is, the
folder or drive is exactly the one it always was. - Design your own on a drive. Start a new design on any of those shapes, with the drive you
chose first, and words, shapes and pictures land on its face in a colour that reads there. The
list of drives shows each one's picture, under its system. The Linux folder is there too,
beside the Mac's and Windows'. - Paint for a drive, or the Linux folder. Every drive shape is in the AI prompt's list of
shapes and in @, beside the folders, and a new chat starts on the drive on show. Whole
drive paints the drive on FolderSkin's drawing of it and cuts it out along the drive's own
outline, Just the art paints its face, and the picture goes with the drive skins. - Packs of drives.
folderskin-tools packs make --drivesmakes one andpacks checkchecks
it, and Community marks it Drives. Its skins wait behind the folder skins until a drive is
chosen. FolderSkin 0.1.9 doesn't see packs of drives at all, so it never puts one on a folder. - Runs over subfolders go on in the background. Applying a skin to a folder and the folders
inside it, or removing their custom icons, no longer holds the app up: pick another folder,
look through Community or make a skin while it goes. The foot of the sidebar shows the run on
every view, with the skin, the folder, how many folders are done and Stop, and a click on
it brings that folder back. Once the run ends, the same place says how it went, with Carry
on, Try again and Undo where they apply, until you put it away. - A notification when a run ends while FolderSkin is behind other windows: "Dune is on
48,210 folders in Projects", and how many couldn't be changed when some couldn't. - Big runs ask first. A run over more than 5,000 folders, or over a folder still being
counted, says how many folders it has found so far, about how much space the icons take, and
that it goes on in the background. - More models to choose from: Grok Imagine 2.0, Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image, FLUX.2 pro,
max, flex and klein 4B, Recraft V4.1 Flash and Stable Image Ultra. - Details says what a picture cost, as the provider reports it: the price from xAI, Black
Forest Labs and Recraft, and the tokens OpenAI and Gemini used, with OpenAI's worked out in
dollars. - Paint for Windows' folder, or a free icon. The chip beside the model's name, under the AI
prompt, says what a picture is for: the Mac's folder, Windows' folder, or a free icon that
stands on its own, such as a mascot, an object or a character. Click it, or type @ in the box
and pick one by name. A chat keeps its shape, an older chat opens on the one it was using, and
every provider and the Local Model paint for it. - Thirty styles under /. Type / in the prompt box for thirty styles in five groups, from
Studio photo and Clay to Risograph and Synthwave, with ideas to start from. Type a few letters
to narrow the list. A style goes in its own slot beside the box and leaves your words as they
are. - Save a prompt to use again. Save as a prompt, in the / menu, keeps what's in the box
and its style under a name, listed under Your prompts from then on. The x beside one of
yours removes it, with Undo in case. - Say what a reference picture is for. A picture added to a prompt is the subject, kept
recognisable. Click its chip to use it as a style to match, or for its colours alone. - Lettering in quotes. Words in quotes are lettered on the skin exactly as written, once, in
the style's own lettering. Without quotes, the picture has no text at all. - Close the folder panel. The button in the window's top right corner, or ⇧⌘\ (Ctrl+Shift+
on Windows and Linux), closes the folder panel and opens it again, in every view where it
shows. It stays as you left it, like the folded sidebar, and choosing a folder opens it. - A skin keeps how it was made: the prompt exactly as it was sent, its style, its lettering,
its pictures and the template it was painted on, so a result can be traced and made again.
Changed
- The AI view, Design your own and Community open at once. They used to load the first time
they were opened, and the list of shapes in the AI view stayed empty for seconds while its
pictures were drawn. FolderSkin now gets them ready behind the library as soon as it's on
show, draws the shapes' pictures ten times faster, and wherever something is still on its way,
a spinner says so: a view, a list of shapes, a drive's picture. A library thumbnail still being
drawn holds its place with a faint card. - Thumbnails, shape pictures and cut-outs are drawn about 1.6 times faster. The parts of
FolderSkin that draw and code pictures are now built for speed, where the rest of the app is
built small, for half a megabyte more to download. - An empty design's hint sits at the foot of the stage, beside an info icon, where it never
covers the folder or the drive. - Switching folders is instant. Choosing the Mac's, Windows' or the Linux folder used to
send every skin's thumbnail to the window again and say "Drawing your skins" while it did, for
seconds with a big library and over a minute the first time. The thumbnails for every folder are
now drawn ahead in the background, and the library shows each one as it's needed, so a switch
and a launch no longer wait for any of them. - Runs over subfolders on a Mac are about 100 times faster, and take a fraction of the
space. On the Mac's own disks the folders share one copy of the icon, so each takes about
30 KB instead of 2.5 MB. On network drives and other disks each folder gets a copy of about
1 MB, without the icon's largest size, which Finder only draws for the biggest icons on a
Retina screen. - Subfolders have no limit. A folder's tree used to stop at 5,000 folders. Now it's counted
in the background however big it is, and the switch shows the count as it grows until it has
them all ("48,210 folders inside"). Picking another folder stops the count. - Choose reads one folder at a time. Each column lists only the folders in the one it
shows, so it opens at once however much is below, and "22 of 28 folders inside" fills in as
the count gets there. A tick takes the folder and everything inside it unless a tick further
down says otherwise, so ticking a folder with 40,000 inside costs no more than ticking one. - A run starts at once and finds its folders as it goes: it says "3,120 of 12,000+" until it
knows how many there are. - One run at a time. Starting another while one is going says which folder that one is in,
until it ends. - A stopped run says how many couldn't be changed before it stopped, as well as how many
wear the skin and how many weren't reached. - Google's picture model is now Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, with Gemini 3 Pro Image beside it for
sharper lettering. Google shuts Gemini 2.5 Flash Image down on 2 October 2026, and FolderSkin
moves you to the new one on its own. - GPT Image 2 takes the place of GPT Image 1, which OpenAI shuts down on 23 October 2026.
FLUX.2 pro takes FLUX 1.1 Pro's place, and Recraft V4.1 takes Recraft V3's. A model you chose
that FolderSkin no longer offers moves to the one that took its place, and the skins it made
keep its name. - The price under the box is the price you pay. Every price is the provider's own, at the
settings FolderSkin sends, and OpenAI is asked for a set quality (high for Flare, max for
Sunburst, medium for GPT Image 2) instead of one it picks. - Each picture is asked for at its shape's own size, as a setting rather than in the words:
exactly 1024 × 960 for the Mac look at OpenAI and Black Forest Labs, and the nearest size or
aspect ratio each other provider offers. - Your idea is painted as you wrote it. Ideogram's Magic Prompt and FLUX.2's prompt rewriting
are off. Stability AI and Ideogram get a real negative prompt, and their own style preset
where a style has one. - Gemini paints whole folders on green instead of magenta, which it tends to leave as a dark
rim around the folder. The greens painted on the folder itself stay. - Prompts are written for each kind of model. FolderSkin builds every prompt from one recipe
and writes it the way each provider reads best: labelled lines for OpenAI and Gemini, Grok's
own names for pictures, p...
FolderSkin v0.1.9
Added
- Choose which subfolders get the skin. With Include subfolders on, Choose opens the
folders inside as Finder's column view: go from the first level down to the deepest with a
click or the keys Finder uses, and tick the folders that go. A folder's box ticks or clears
everything inside it, and a dash shows a folder with only some of it ticked. The row then says
how many go ("22 of 28 folders inside"), Apply says how many folders it changes, and Remove
custom icons takes the icons off only those. It keeps up at the most a run takes, 5,000
folders, however many are in one folder and however deep they go. - Search everything instead. When nothing in a tag matches a search, Search all packs
instead (or Search all skins instead) looks in All with the same words.
Changed
- A search in a tag says so: "Search packs in Mountains", "Search skins in Painting". It used
to look like a search of everything. - The theme row is one button. It says Dark mode with a moon in light mode and Light
mode with a sun in dark mode, and a click swaps them. The switch beside it is gone. - Community is tidier. How packs are checked is an info icon beside the count, with the
sentence in its tip and the guide a click away. A pack's Update comes before View, so
View always sits beside the last button. The pack viewer no longer links to GitHub.
Fixed
- French no longer puts "de" or "que" in front of a name: "Essai de Isaac Newton" is now
"À l'essai : Isaac Newton", and the same for packs, files and providers. - Carrying on after stopping Remove custom icons leaves the folders with no icon of their
own alone, as the rest of the run did. It used to write to them.
Downloads: macOS (Apple silicon and Intel) .dmg, Windows -setup.exe or .msi, Linux .AppImage, .deb or .rpm for x86_64 and ARM64.
FolderSkin v0.1.8
Added
- FolderSkin speaks six languages: English, 简体中文, 日本語, 한국어, Français and Español. Pick
one from Language in the sidebar, under Dark mode. The first time you open FolderSkin it
follows your system's language. Numbers, sizes, times and dates follow the language too, and
links to the guides open them in it. - macOS speaks it too. The menu bar changes with the language at once, and the parts macOS
draws itself, such as the open panel and the Services menu, follow it from the next launch. - The guides, the READMEs and folderskin.app are in the same six languages. The website's
pages are at folderskin.app/zh-cn/, /ja/, /ko/, /fr/ and /es/, each with its own guides.
Changed
- Plainer English everywhere: no em dashes and no semicolons in anything the app says, and
the sentences that had them read more simply now. - The MIT licence says what it means in the share dialog: anyone can use the pack, as long
as the licence notice goes with it. It used to say it was FolderSkin's own licence, which has
been GPL-3.0 since 0.1.7. - Two people can share under the same name. Names repeat the way pack names do, and each
computer is told apart by its own key, which nobody sees. - Pack tools:
packs makegives a pack's finished folders one shape, packs normalizedoes
it for packs already made, andpacks check --require-one-shapeholds a pack to it.
Downloads: macOS (Apple silicon and Intel) .dmg, Windows -setup.exe or .msi, Linux .AppImage, .deb or .rpm for x86_64 and ARM64.
FolderSkin v0.1.7
Added
- Sending a pack tries again by itself. When the connection drops or FolderSkin's sharing
service is busy while a pack is on its way, the share dialog waits a moment and sends again, up
to five times, waiting a little longer each time and never less than the service asks. When the
service says to leave it for longer, because too many requests from your computer were turned
down or sharing is paused, the dialog shows what the service said and doesn't try again on its
own.
Changed
- FolderSkin is now GPL-3.0. From this release on, the code is licensed under the GNU General
Public License v3.0 (GPL-3.0-only). Anyone can still use, study, change and share it, and a
changed version someone shares has to come with its source, under the same licence. Releases up
to 0.1.6 came out under MIT and keep it. The FolderSkin name and logo aren't covered by either;
TRADEMARKS.md says how to use them. Skins keep their own licences. - Packs are shared through FolderSkin. The share dialog sends every pack to FolderSkin's review
queue: verify your computer once in the browser, with no account anywhere, and a person looks at
the pack before it joins Community. With one way in, every pack gets the same checks and the
same review, whether or not you have a GitHub account. Save a folder is still there for
anyone who wants the pack as files. - Packs can share a name. Every pack now has an id of its own, made from its name and six
random characters, such asclassic-art-k7q2mx, so two packs can both be called Classic Art.
A pack saved as a folder gets one too. - Packs download faster. The list of packs and their pictures now come from
packs.folderskin.app, served from close to where you are, with the packs repository on GitHub
as the fallback. Every file is still checked before it's used, wherever it came from. - Packs you added keep updating when their ids change. A pack added under the id it had
before still shows as added and still gets its updates under its new id, and an Install link
with the old id still finds it. The first launch still starts with Classic Art picked. - The pack terms are at version 2. They describe sharing through FolderSkin rather than
through pull requests on GitHub: a pack is credited to the name your computer was verified
under, and the version you agreed to is recorded with the pack when you send it. The rules
themselves are the same. FolderSkin sends a pack under whichever version the sharing service
asks for, so the terms can change without a new FolderSkin. - A pack's author shows as plain text in Community and when you look through a pack, rather than
as a link to a GitHub profile: authors are FolderSkin names now. - Pictures are shared losslessly. Every picture in a pack you share or save as a folder is now
a lossless WebP, so the pack looks exactly as you made it: no blur in a gradient or around
lettering, and a finished folder's transparent edge exactly as drawn. The limits are 1024 px
and 1.5 MB a picture, and 64 MB a pack. A picture too detailed to fit is made 896 px, then
768 px, still lossless, and the dialog says which; a pack over 64 MB is turned down with a
suggestion to split it in two. Making the pictures ready takes under a second each, and the
dialog counts them as it goes. - Your library takes less space. A picture you add, paint or design is now saved as a
lossless WebP rather than a PNG: every pixel the same, in about two thirds of the space.
Pictures saved before stay as they are, and work as they always did. - For pack maintainers:
packs makewrites every picture as a lossless WebP of at most 1.5 MB,
with the encoder built in, so it no longer needscwebp.packs checkholds each pack's
pictures to 64 MB together, and--require-losslessholds every picture to the rules new packs
follow: PNG or lossless WebP, at most 1.5 MB.
Removed
- Sharing through GitHub. The share dialog no longer signs in to GitHub, forks
folderskin-community or opens a pull request, and Settings → Sharing no longer has a GitHub
section. A GitHub sign-in an earlier version kept is forgotten. - Setting up the local AI model no longer downloads
cwebpon Windows, or asks for it on macOS and
Linux: packs were its only use, and they no longer need it.
Downloads: macOS (Apple silicon and Intel) .dmg, Windows -setup.exe or .msi, Linux .AppImage, .deb or .rpm for x86_64 and ARM64.
FolderSkin v0.1.6
Added
- Share packs without GitHub. The share dialog now sends a pack to FolderSkin's community
service unless you choose GitHub: verify your computer once in the browser, and the pack goes to
the maintainer for review, with no GitHub account needed. Sharing through GitHub is still one
click away in the same dialog. - Install packs from the website. The Install button on a pack in the gallery on
folderskin.app opens FolderSkin on that pack in Community
and adds it, with the same progress and message as its Add button. A link to a pack Community
doesn't have says so and suggests searching for it. The links arefolderskin://install?pack=<id>,
and FolderSkin ignores any other kind. - Official packs. Packs the maintainer vouches for wear an Official badge in Community and
when you look through them. - How often each pack is added. Adding a pack from Community tells FolderSkin's community
service the pack's id, and nothing else, so the gallery on folderskin.app can show how many
times each pack has been added. The service counts an add once a day per network, and deletes
the hash of the network it counted from when the day is over. - For pack maintainers:
official.jsonbesidepacks/in folderskin-community lists the official
packs, andindex.jsonnow says when each pack was added and whether it is official, for the
website.head.jsonlists the official packs too.
Changed
- On Windows and Linux, opening FolderSkin while it's already open brings its window forward
instead of starting a second copy. - The pack guide and the pack terms open on folderskin.app,
FolderSkin's new website.
Downloads: macOS (Apple silicon and Intel) .dmg, Windows -setup.exe or .msi, Linux .AppImage, .deb or .rpm for x86_64 and ARM64.
