got it working and compiled it with gt5 support. the issue is resolved in this version but:

1. the error messages from the configure script are false :
   It has to state, the it misses the development files for pulse audio libs and qbt5 libs, not the libs itself.
2. the building.md should not state "./configure && make" as i needed "./configure --enable-qt && make"

4. the mentioned bugs are gone, but new bugs are build in ... grumpf ZWX ... -> M -> Settings -> Configure ProjectM .. the buttons texts for "save" "cancel" and "reset" are missing. QT5 Bug.
5. 10++% of the effects are either a blackscreen or a whitescreen
6. the default fps seems to be 35 instead of 60.
7. the default setting of "Pulse Audio Settings" is to try the first playable sink... thats my displays hdmi in my case => no effects when you play music => untill you find the M menu.
   Solution: If it's started for the first time, do not assume that the user knows the shortcuts keys, instead use small wizard to make a workable setup with him.

thanks for the info! may i suggest updating the README? feel free to send in PRs with patches/documentation.
Just be aware the README contains generic instructions - not everyone is trying to build the qt version so it's not in there by default. However a section on building pulseaudio/qt would be quite useful. As would the packages you need (noted as redhat, they will differ on other distros)

A makefile and configure.ac support needs to be added back for the -jack project
