[BUG] Lombok not generating code with project migrated to Spring Boot 4

Spring Boot 4.0.0-M3 modulith with latest jmolecules:

The Maven Commandline build and the Intellij project build fail, error message "Symbol not found" for all methods that should be generated by Lombok. Using Maven 3.9.9 with wrapper or with Intellij embedded Maven. The generated methods are "clickable" and bring me to the field or class annotated with Lombok annotations.

I believe I have followed the Lombok setup page to the letter, I have tried to set the version explicitly or using ${lombok.version}. The initializr creates a project with Lombok support that works.

I have also tried the latest version 1.18.42 of Lombok.

The Spring people suggest a bug in Lombok: spring-projects/spring-boot#47548

With Spring Boot 3.5.4 and these versions everything is fine:

You usually get these errors because the compiler does not trigger the lombok annotation processing. In most cases the build setup is wrong or the lombok version does not support the used javac version but this seems to be fine in your case.

In some cases the compiler detect some unrecoverable errors and aborts the compilation process but still run the normal error detection. In this case the real error is usually not visible because the compiler limits the amount of shown errors. To see the real error you have to set -Xmaxerrs to increase the amount of errors the compiler prints.

Other helpful debug flags are -XprintProcessorInfo and -XprintRounds to show more details about the annotation processing steps.

If all of this seems to be fine you can try to only update a limited set of dependencies until it breaks.

@dschulten That the spring team sees 'improbable breaking change' in the changelog and immediately goes: AHA! That MUST be it! is a disgrace, how incredibly rude. It's.. not the explanation. Of course it isn't. I took a moment to yell at @wilkinsona 's uninformed view of the realities of software engineering.

Nevertheless, the bug is not likely to be related to spring. But it might be. I mention spring's ridiculous response to your bug report to make clear that their opinion about the cause can safely be ignored as uninsightful.

We need a little more info to debug this one. As rawi01 said, one problem is that lombok doesn't run at all because of a syntax error in your code that is not related to lombok at all, but that 'real' error is being drowned out by an ocean of lombok errors. It's a rare situation and most errors don't cause this unfortunate circumstance, but it's something we need to eliminate as a possible explanation for this bug.

One trivial way to accomplish this: Write a simple 'hello world' style project that uses one simple lombok feature (@Getter is pretty simple, that's usually a good candidate), check if that does work. If that also fails we have eliminated that option. Then we need to know exactly how you start the compile and which JDK version you're on; in particular, newer JDK versions require -proc:full or an explicit reference to annotation processors for it to run them; this is a breaking change OpenJDK introduced.

The build script you posted is way too complicated for me to put in the effort to read it. We'd need a minimal example.

@dschulten there is one known incompatibility with the new Major Version 3 of the Jackson framework. Please check #3960 if you are using @Jacksonized with @Builder/@SuperBuilder. The issue might even be transitive. For example the jmolecules-jackson dependency has a jmolecules-jackson3 counterpart. Spring Boot 4.0.0-M3 is using Jackson3 by default.

Thanks to @cachescrubber I could fix this: I had explicitly included jmolecules-jackson in the pom.xml and needed to switch that to jmolecules-jackson3.
