The Head of Safety helps PyCon AU to be a respectful and inclusive environment by proactively encouraging respectful and inclusive behaviour from all those at PyCon AU.
The Head of Safety's main responsibilities are:
- Safety guidelines (in collaboration with the conference director): Translate the conference's cultural statements and ethos into a Code of Conduct that describes acceptable behaviour and guidelines for how to identify, plan for, head off, and address safety issues.
- Manage and address safety issues (along with the safety team): Be a point of contact for anyone at the conference to report or discuss potential safety issues - in-person, online, and by answering the safety phone. Keep abreast of all issues and potential issues, and plan how to mitigate issues before they arise.
- Lead the safety team: Recruit, organise, and run a team of volunteers to address safety issues as they arise, before, during, and after the conference.
- Have uncomfortable conversations: Directly discuss raised safety issues with people involved, and talk to individuals about acceptable behaviour at PyCon AU.
- Lead by example: The Head of Safety should address safety issues in a respectful and inclusive manner that reflects the highest standards of expected behaviour at the conference.
- Transparency: Inform the core team about what types of safety issues are being encountered and how they are being resolved. Discuss issues that may come up and mitigation plans.
- Process improvement: Provide input to core team about how we can improve our practices to avoid or mitigate safety issues.
