A complete multi-service development environment that "just works"


Quick Start

Get Started in 3 Steps

# 1. Clone and install
git clone <your-repo-url>
cd wander-dev-env
make install

# 2. Configure environment
cp .env.local.example .env

# 3. Start developing
make dev

Visit http://localhost:3000 - Your app is running!

Total time: 3-5 minutes (2-3 min install + ~20s startup)

Alternative: Interactive Setup

./setup.sh  # Installs Docker if needed, guides you through setup

Diagnostic Tools

make doctor  # Check your environment (Docker, ports, config)

Supported Platforms

Note: Times measured on Apple M1 MacBook Pro with cached Docker images. First-time runs will be slower due to image downloads.

Deployment

Configuration

Environment Variables

Configuration is in .env file. Two options:

Option 1: Quick Start (Recommended for Local Dev)

cp .env.local.example .env

Uses safe defaults. Start immediately with make dev.

What you get:

  • Pre-configured passwords for local dev
  • All ports set to standards (3000, 8000, 5432, 6379)
  • Ready to run immediately
  • Perfect for: Getting started quickly, daily development

Option 2: Custom Configuration

cp .env.example .env
# Edit .env and replace CHANGE_ME values
make validate-secrets  # Verify no CHANGE_ME left
make dev

Security Best Practices

Local Development:

  • Simple passwords are fine (e.g., dev_password_123)
  • .env is git-ignored automatically
  • Use .env.local.example for quick setup

Production:

  • Generate strong secrets: openssl rand -base64 32
  • Use environment variable injection (K8s secrets, cloud provider secrets)
  • Never commit .env files to git
  • Rotate secrets regularly
