Runs a collection of prompts through Invoke-Shp in a bounded pool of parallel runspaces and returns a ShellPilot.BatchResult for every input, carrying the answer, the item's usage and cost, and - when the call failed - the error. Built for unattended, repeated work such as an evaluation sweep, where the calls are independent and the sequential latency is pure waste.
EVERY ITEM IS STATELESS, and that is the contract. A batch never reads and never writes the running session conversation (Get-ShpChat): each prompt is dispatched with an empty history, so nothing accumulates between items. This is deliberate. Invoke-Shp continues the session conversation by default, so a serial loop over prompts in one process grows the request until the model refuses it with HTTP 400 model_max_prompt_tokens_exceeded - in a measured 54-call run, calls 1-18 succeeded and calls 19-54 all failed for exactly that reason. Use Invoke-Shp for a conversation; use Invoke-ShpBatch for independent calls.
FAILURES ARE ISOLATED AND REPORTED AS DATA. One failed call never aborts the batch and never writes to the error stream, because an error written from a worker obeys the caller's $ErrorActionPreference - under 'Stop' it would destroy every result in the batch, which is precisely what this cmdlet exists to prevent. Check Success, Error and ErrorRecord on each result; a single summary warning at the end names how many items did not complete. -FailBatchOnAnyItem is the one exception and it does not weaken the rule: it raises a single terminating error AFTER every item has run and every result has been written, so it converts the final tally into an exit condition rather than abandoning work.
RESULTS ARRIVE IN COMPLETION ORDER, not input order, so position carries no meaning. Every result carries Index (the input's 0-based position) and Id (your own identifier, or the index), plus the original input on InputObject.
Three things are forced for every item and cannot be turned on. Streaming is off, because N concurrent workers would interleave N token streams into unreadable host output - note some models cap non-streamed output below their streamed maximum, so a reply that needs the higher ceiling has to go through Invoke-Shp directly. The ask_user tool is off, because a worker runspace has no console to ask on and a batch is unattended by definition. Progress events are off, because they would arrive interleaved and out of order.
Per-item usage is merged into the session usage log, so Get-ShpUsage reports a batch the same way it reports individual calls.
Invoke-ShpBatch -Prompt 'What is PowerShell?', 'What is DSC?', 'What is Pester?'
Runs three independent prompts with at most four in flight and returns three results.
Get-Content .\queries.txt | Invoke-ShpBatch -Model claude-haiku-4.5 -ThrottleLimit 8 |
Sort-Object Index | Select-Object Index, Success, CostUSD, Content
Pipes a file of prompts in, raises the concurrency, and restores input order afterwards - results arrive in completion order, so sort on Index when order matters.
$queries = 1..20 | ForEach-Object { [pscustomobject]@{ Id = "q$_"; Prompt = "Question $_" } }
$queries | Invoke-ShpBatch -Temperature 0 -Seed 42 -DisableBrowsing -DisableFileAccess -DisableTerminal
Runs a reproducible, fully isolated grading sweep. Each result carries the caller's own Id, so a verdict can be matched to its query even though the answers arrive out of order.
$r = Invoke-ShpBatch -Prompt $prompts -MaxBatchBudgetUSD 5.00
$r | Where-Object { -not $_.Success } | Select-Object Id, Skipped, Error
Caps the whole run at five dollars and then inspects what did not complete. Nothing was written to the error stream, so the results are the only report.
$r = Invoke-ShpBatch -Prompt $prompts -JsonSchema $schema
$r | Where-Object Success | ForEach-Object { $_.ContentObject.verdict }
Requests a schema-constrained reply per item and reads the parsed object off each result.
try {
Invoke-ShpBatch -Prompt $prompts -JsonSchema $schema `
-FailOn SchemaMismatch, Truncated -FailBatchOnAnyItem |
Export-Csv verdicts.csv -NoTypeInformation
} catch {
$_.TargetObject.Failed | Format-Table Id, FinishReason, Error
Write-Host "::error::$($_.Exception.Message)"
exit 1
}
The CI wrapper. Every item still runs, an unparseable or truncated reply marks only its own item failed, and one terminating error at the end stops the step. The failed items are on the summary carried by TargetObject.
$job = Invoke-ShpBatch -Prompt $prompts -ThrottleLimit 8 -AsJob
$results = Receive-Job -Job $job -Wait -AutoRemoveJob
$results | Sort-Object Index | Format-Table Id, Success, CostUSD
Runs the whole batch in the background. Receive-Job yields the same ShellPilot.BatchResult objects the synchronous call would have produced; only the usage records stay behind in the job's own session.
Let fetch_url reach loopback, link-local and private addresses. Blocked by default.

Accept wildcard characters: FalseRun the whole batch in a background thread job and return the job object immediately. Receive-Job resolves it to the same stream of ShellPilot.BatchResult objects the synchronous call would have returned
- a thread job runs in the same process, so nothing is serialised.
The job gets a copy of the session context, session defaults, cached model limits, tool policy, redaction policy and registered tools. The usage records the items produce are merged into the JOB's usage log, not the caller's, so Get-ShpUsage in the caller's session does not see them. The entitlement gate is still evaluated in the caller's session, so a refused backend fails at the call site rather than inside the job.

Accept wildcard characters: FalseForward Context accounting to each item, including batches run with AsJob. Every item result then carries its own ContextReport attributing that item's estimated outgoing Context tokens by source. It is local accounting: no extra request, no shared state between workers, and no change to what any item sends.

Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseForward opt-in deferred Tool schema loading to each item, including batches run with AsJob. Each Turn starts with its own unloaded set. Replayed User tools may be searched; attached MCP processes are not shared with workers. Fixed built-ins and explicitly selected Tool names remain eager. ExcludeTool still wins. Reduces schema cost; it is not authorization, containment, or prompt-injection defense.

Accept wildcard characters: FalseTurn off egress redaction for every item. By default each item's prompt, attachments and tool results are scrubbed of common secret shapes before they leave the runner (see Invoke-Shp -DisableRedaction); this switch forwards -DisableRedaction to every worker instead. Any custom rules from Set-ShpRedactionPolicy travel to every worker the same way the tool policy does, so a batch is never the one path that redacts less than a single Invoke-Shp call would.

Default value: None
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseForward a caller-supplied execution and containment contract to every item. Same contract as Invoke-Shp -ExecutionContract, with the same concurrency requirement as ToolCallControl. ShellPilot supplies no sandbox of its own; this is where a caller connects theirs.
Type: ScriptBlock
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: None
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseAfter every item has finished, raise ONE terminating error if any item did not complete - whether it failed a -FailOn condition, failed for any other reason, or was rejected as malformed input. Items skipped by -MaxBatchBudgetUSD count as not completed too.
FullyQualifiedErrorId is 'ShpBatchItemsFailed,Invoke-ShpBatch'. The error's TargetObject is a ShellPilot.BatchSummary with TotalCount, SucceededCount, FailedCount, SkippedCount and Failed - the failed results themselves, so a wrapper can report which items died without re-running anything.
Note what a terminating error does to the pipeline: the results were already written, but the statement does not complete, so `$r = Invoke-ShpBatch ... -FailBatchOnAnyItem` leaves $r unassigned. Read the failures off TargetObject, or omit the switch and branch on Success yourself. As everywhere in this module, nothing calls exit or sets $LASTEXITCODE - the exit code is the caller's job.
Type: SwitchParameter
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: False
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseApplied to every item, exactly as Invoke-Shp -FailOn: BudgetExceeded, Truncated, ToolIterationLimit, NoContent and/or SchemaMismatch turn a disappointing outcome into a failure. See Invoke-Shp for what each condition tests and which error id it raises.
A tripped condition NEVER aborts the batch. The item comes back with Success false, the message on Error and the whole ErrorRecord on ErrorRecord - so FullyQualifiedErrorId is still there to branch on - and every other item runs to completion regardless. That is the same isolation contract a failed HTTP call already has, and it is the reason the switch is safe to turn on for a large sweep.
The item keeps its Model, FinishReason, Usage and CostUSD, because a -FailOn stop is a turn that completed and was billed. Content and ContentObject are withheld, as they are for any unsuccessful item; the full result is still on the item's Result member. Batch spend accounting counts a failed item's cost, so -MaxBatchBudgetUSD is not fooled by it.

Type: String
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: None
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseCeiling in USD for the batch as a whole. Before each item is sent, the cost recorded so far is compared with this cap; once it is reached, the remaining items are returned with Skipped and BudgetExceeded set instead of being sent. It is a gate on dispatch, not a kill switch: calls already in flight are never cancelled - abandoning a billable request whose cost you would then never learn is worse than letting it finish - so up to ThrottleLimit-1 further calls can still be billed after the cap trips. Omit it to run without a batch cap.
Type: Double
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: 0
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalsePer-item ceiling in USD: stops one item's tool-calling loop once that item's estimated spend exceeds the amount. Independent of -MaxBatchBudgetUSD.
Type: Double
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: 0
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseEstimated-token budget for the accumulated tool results of each item. Left unset it resolves per item exactly as it does for Invoke-Shp: session context, then the model's own advertised limits, then the built-in fallback. The caller's cached model limits travel to every worker, so calling Get-ShpModel once before the batch is enough - a worker never fetches them itself. 0 disables the guard.
Type: Int32
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: 0
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseMaximum number of tokens the model may generate per item. Falls back to the session default set by Select-ShpModel.

Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: 0
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseMaximum retries on a transient (429/5xx) HTTP failure, per request. Backoff is jittered, so concurrent workers refused by the same 429 do not synchronise into a second burst.
Type: Int32
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:

Position: Named
Default value: 0
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseMaximum number of tool-calling iterations per item before that item is abandoned.

Position: Named
Default value: 0
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseModel id to use for every item. If omitted, the session default set by Select-ShpModel is used. Resolved once, in the caller's session, so the whole batch runs on one model. To compare model tiers, run one batch per tier.
Type: String
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: None
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseWall-clock budget, in seconds, for riding out a connection-level network outage on any one request.
Type: Int32
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: 0
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseRun unattended. A batch already forces -DisableUserPrompts, so what this adds is the rest of the profile: any would-be prompt inside an item becomes a terminating error for that item, and in CI the batch is refused before a single worker starts unless a backend is configured or SHELLPILOT_ALLOW_COPILOT_BACKEND_IN_CI is set. It is on automatically when $env:CI is truthy; pass -NonInteractive:$false to override that.
Type: SwitchParameter
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: False
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseThe prompts to send. Accepts plain strings, or objects with a Prompt property and an optional Id property that is carried through to the result. Takes pipeline input, so a list of queries can be piped straight in. An entry that is empty, or an object with no Prompt property, is returned as a failed result rather than aborting the batch - one bad row in a large input must not discard the good answers.
Type: Object[]
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases: InputObject
Required: True

Default value: None
Accept pipeline input: True (ByValue)
Accept wildcard characters: FalseReasoning (thinking) effort applied to every item. Falls back to the session default set by Select-ShpModel.
Type: String
Parameter Sets: (All)

Type: String
Parameter Sets: InlinePrompt
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: None
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseOne or more paths to Markdown files whose bodies become the system instructions for every item (leading YAML front-matter stripped). Belongs to the 'PromptFromFile' parameter set and is mutually exclusive with -SystemPrompt.
Type: String[]
Parameter Sets: PromptFromFile
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: None
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseSampling temperature between 0 and 2, applied to every item. Use 0 for a grading or classification sweep so the grader stops contributing variance to the measurement.
Type: Double
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: 0
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseMaximum number of calls in flight at once. Defaults to 4, deliberately conservative: rate limits are real and a first run should not earn a 429. Raise it once you know the backend tolerates it; set it to 1 to run the batch serially while keeping the per-item isolation.
Type: Int32
Parameter Sets: (All)

Position: Named
Default value: 0
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalsePath to an OAuth token file to authenticate with, read by every worker. Omit it to resolve the token by the module's precedence: the session context (Set-ShpContext -GitHubToken, replayed into every worker), then $env:SHELLPILOT_GITHUB_TOKEN, then the default token file.
Type: String
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: None
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseExact tool names to offer in every item, intersected with enabled categories. An empty array offers none. MCP remains unavailable in batch workers; this option does not create or widen a registration.
Type: String[]
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: None
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseForward a caller-supplied pre/post Tool-call decision control to every item. Same contract as Invoke-Shp -ToolCallControl, including the fail-closed default. The control runs inside the worker runspace and is invoked concurrently by as many workers as the throttle allows, so it must be safe to call from several runspaces at once and must not rely on state private to the calling session.
Type: Hashtable
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: None
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseForward a caller-owned Tool-result spill root to each item, including batches run with AsJob. Every worker writes into the same directory; file names carry each item's own run, turn and call identifiers, so concurrent workers do not collide and no worker overwrites another's result. Unbound, every item truncates oversized results exactly as before. Retention of the directory is yours; nothing is pruned.
Type: String
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: None
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseForward the spill threshold to each item. Ignored without ToolResultSpillRoot.
Type: Int32
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:

Accept wildcard characters: FalseNucleus-sampling cutoff between 0 and 1, applied to every item. An alternative to -Temperature; tune one or the other, not both.
Type: Double
Parameter Sets: (All)
Aliases:
Required: False
Position: Named
Default value: 0
Accept pipeline input: False
Accept wildcard characters: FalseContinue an inbound W3C traceparent, so every item's Event records land under the span that dispatched the batch rather than starting N unrelated traces. Each item still gets its own run id and its own span.
