SHDL Studio is a desktop IDE for SHDL. You can write circuits, simulate them, test them and look inside them, all in one window. It needs no Python and no command line.
Download
SHDL-Studio_0.9.0_universal.dmg (below) runs on macOS 12 Monterey or later, on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The app is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens with no Gatekeeper warning.
Open the DMG and drag SHDL Studio into Applications.
What's in it
- Editor: syntax highlighting, live diagnostics while you type, hover cards, completion that adds the missing
use, ⌘-click go to definition, an outline, and inline flatten peek. It also has settings for font, tabs and wrapping, and you can rebind any key in Help ▸ Keyboard Shortcuts. - Simulator: runs on a packed, event-driven engine built into the app. You can toggle inputs, step the clock, set breakpoints, and travel back in time through earlier states.
- Tests: run a project's test files and see which assertions pass and which fail.
- Waveforms: inspect signals over time and export them as VCD.
- Schematic view: shows the circuit you are editing as a diagram.
- Panels and scripting: build interactive front panels (LEDs, switches, screens, keyboards, memory and register views) and drive simulations with Rhai scripts.
- Packages: browse the registry, then add, remove and install dependencies. The package manager is built in, so no
shdlCLI is needed. - Terminal: a built-in terminal, a Run button for Python files, and Markdown preview.
- Example projects, ready to open: Learning SHDL, an SR16 CPU, and Game of Life.
.shdlfiles open in Studio. Only one Studio window runs at a time. Unsaved work is guarded when you quit and restored when you start again.
Known limits
- macOS only for now. Windows and Linux builds are coming later.
- No auto-update yet. To update, download the next release from this page.
This release ships only the Studio app. The pyshdl package and the shdl CLI are unchanged; see v1.1.0.
