@rages4calm rages4calm released this 22 Oct 22:15

Lagoon Recomp 0.2.5

Fixes broken-looking text in the exploration map. The 640x520 map was fitted
into a 448-pixel-high intermediate buffer, dropping rows from the bitmap font.
The frozen presenter now allocates enough resolution for title-owned panels
while preserving the game viewport aspect. Map geometry, discovery, saves and
gameplay are unchanged. Save-state browser and rewind retain their existing
presentation path. The interpreter safety net remains enabled.

Checked on the actual hidden OpenGL presenter with Enhanced graphics at 1080p,
using 4:3, 16:9 and 32:9 settings. Map open/close and guest resumption pass.
These are focused assisted scene checks, not a new campaign or physical controller
certification. The owner's completed campaign remains the release baseline.

Download the Windows x64 ZIP from Releases. The game executable, Companion and
optional X68000 soundtrack are included. Bring your own clean USA ROM.

Lagoon 0.2.4 — official release

Choose a tag to compare

@rages4calm rages4calm released this 22 Oct 21:15

This official release addresses reports from the owner's completed campaign and exploration of every map. It remains a mixed native/interpreter port; the safety net stays enabled.

  • Faster area changes: ordinary doors reuse more source-qualified native loading work and shorter fades. Four Atland/Gold Cave and Elf Field/Voloh crossings use 40–71% fewer loading fields, with the same destinations.
  • Widescreen enemy simulation: ordinary enemies visible beyond the old screen boundary can run their original AI and animation. Authored attack distances remain unchanged.
  • Thor's bridge: escorted safe jumps now cross the tablet bridge, including recovery after a mid-jump state reload. Existing wall routing and collision remain.
  • Castle landing: the cloud exit has a 16-pixel larger landing catchment on each side, using the original castle transition.
  • Equipment screen: fixes the split rightmost selection outline around the Moon Sword, armor and shield in widescreen.
  • Boss health: first-phase Evil Spirit and Zerah bars track their actual fighting actors instead of a proxy or retired NPC. Combat, damage and later Thor/Bird health remain unchanged.
  • Achievements: notices are 68% smaller and appear at the top right. The ending detector no longer mistakes the palette-animation byte for part of the completion counter. Existing completed-state loads do not retroactively grant achievements.
  • Music audit: all 75 room descriptors and 17 replacement file identities/loops were checked. Unmapped cues retain SNES music. The prisoner disappearance includes an original short white flash; that scripted effect was preserved.

Focused source/original-opcode, save/load, health-drain, equipment navigation, actual 1080p GPU and packaged-launcher checks accompany this release. Hidden GPU/real-audio pacing averaged about 60 fps, with occasional intervals up to 23 ms; this is not a locked-60 or full-native claim. The map/special-menu visual redesign and zoom-out remain future work.

Extract the complete Windows ZIP, run Setup Lagoon.cmd or lagoon.Companion.exe, and supply your clean USA ROM. The game EXE, Companion, icons and reviewed X68000 soundtrack are included; the ROM is not. Keep your existing saves/settings when moving to the new package.

The owner has completed campaign playtesting. This is the official playable release. Future maintenance will address reported bugs; replacing every interpreter path is not a release requirement.

Windows preview 0.2.3 — Atland doors and native scripts

Choose a tag to compare

@rages4calm rages4calm released this 22 Oct 13:41

Atland's widescreen doors now stay closed and visible when approaching, reversing direction, and loading a save. This batch also fixes a narrow black strip at the town's map edge, adds guarded native NPC/event/room script setup and command scanning, and reduces the CPU work used to classify fullscreen magic uploads.

  • Moving Atland checks passed at 16:9, 32:9, and an 800-pixel internal width. The continuous moving-door check matched 501,272 visible source pixels across 446 fields.
  • Native off/auto comparisons preserved game state, CPU timing, pictures, and audio. Unknown or changed contexts still use the interpreter safety net.
  • Final hidden Windows OpenGL + real-audio timing checks passed their gameplay-state comparisons. One 22.2 ms frame remained in the door route; this is not a claim of locked 60 FPS everywhere.
  • Clean package setup, the actual Companion launcher adapter, and a 120-field game boot passed. Existing local saves, settings, and achievement progress were preserved during installation.

Download and extract the ZIP, then run lagoon.Companion.exe. You must provide your own supported Lagoon USA ROM. The optional converted X68000 soundtrack is included. This remains a playable preview; the uninterrupted campaign playtest and remaining unsupported rendering/native paths are still open.

Windows preview 0.2.2 — renderer CPU headroom and native script waits

Choose a tag to compare

@rages4calm rages4calm released this 22 Oct 12:23

This preview reduces repeated CPU work in the shared widescreen renderer and adds a narrowly qualified native service for scripted rendering waits. The interpreter safety net remains enabled.

  • Unchanged sprite-placement inputs reuse their existing calculation across raster lines. Changed inputs retain the full calculation and rendering guards.
  • Background planes reuse source-decoded colors and depth when their exact inputs match. Actors and HUD stay fresh; the complete reference-picture comparison remains. Camera, width, generation, graphics, palette and mosaic changes invalidate reuse.
  • The original finite inactive actor-slot iterator now runs natively in qualified scripted rendering waits. Every active actor call and the final rendering sequence retain their existing owners, with original bus work, flags, clocks and deadline handling.

Focused renderer benchmarks save about 56–62% of the background phase with a stationary camera and changing actors; scrolling stays effectively unchanged. The sprite-policy observer saves about 0.040 ms per field. These are phase-specific CPU measurements. There is no full-game locked-60-FPS claim.

Validation includes 13,015 opcode cases, 11,350 deadline budgets, 172 native refusals, 43,008 sprite-policy metadata mutations and 102,976 background-input mutations. The final enabled/disabled cold-menu route matches 2,466 ordered pictures, complete checkpoints and actual APU/DSP/audio captures. Cross-area final checks match another 5,074 pictures and 85 checkpoints across Elf Field, additional area families, an endgame area and a mosaic transition. Separate moving-NPC checks cover four widths through 800 source pixels.

The Windows ZIP includes the game executable, self-contained Companion Launcher and optional X68000 soundtrack. Bring your own clean USA ROM. Extract the whole ZIP and open Setup Lagoon.cmd. Keep your existing local folder safe when moving your settings and saves.

Known limits remain: unsupported graphics histories and dynamic contexts use their existing safe fallbacks; the owner's residual moving fullscreen door flicker has not been reproduced on the tested street route. This update does not reset achievements, modify saves or complete the owner/friends' full campaign playtest.

Windows preview 0.2.1 — dialogue, collision and widescreen sprite fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@rages4calm rages4calm released this 22 Oct 11:16

The hidden visitor now uses Lagoon-style typing dialogue with a portrait while the music keeps playing. The yellow prompt is gone, and finishing the conversation plays the selected B1 sound before the achievement notification.

This update also gives him solid NPC collision and correct player overlap, and fixes dialogue that could fail when starting a fresh game. You can walk around him, finish or cancel the conversation, and continue moving with the controller.

The shared widescreen sprite renderer now clears stale margin visibility after a large offscreen jump. A focused actual-PPU test showed three fields of stray pixels before this fix and none afterward, while normal movement still works. The old 32:9 town screenshot has been replaced with current 1920x1080 EPX output.

  • Includes the playable Windows x64 game EXE, self-contained Companion Launcher, icons and the optional X68000 soundtrack. Bring your own clean USA ROM.
  • Extract the whole ZIP and open Setup Lagoon.cmd. Keep your previous package's local folder safe when moving your settings and saves. The release does not reset existing achievements.
  • The interpreter safety net remains enabled. This is still a preview awaiting the owner/friends' full campaign playtest.

Validation: a new game from an empty save directory through the normal SDL virtual-controller path; collision, dialogue completion/cancellation, actual WASAPI B1 playback, continuing music, one secret unlock and movement afterward. Source checks cover 47,640 original movement steps; the affected gameplay replay matches 716 ordered frames and eight full checkpoints. The clean extracted package also passes setup and startup checks. These are focused checks, not a full-game or physical-controller hardware certification.

Known issue: the reported moving fullscreen Atland house/door flicker remains open. Four walking passes with three reversals were clean in the tested route, including actual OpenGL/EPX output. The shared visibility fix addresses a confirmed renderer defect; it does not establish that every reported flicker is resolved.

Windows preview 0.2.0 — local achievements and a hidden visitor

Choose a tag to compare

@rages4calm rages4calm released this 22 Oct 04:40

CompanionAchievements is now built into Lagoon: 26 local achievements, an in-game browser, unlock notifications and an original chime. A small animated visitor has a secret achievement of his own.

  • Open achievements with Ctrl+J, R2 → Achievements, or the Companion launcher.
  • Progress is offline and separate from game saves/states. Loading a save does not retroactively grant achievements. Scripted diagnostic runs do not award progress.
  • Unlocks are written by a background worker. The chime has its own host audio stream and follows master volume.
  • Includes the native script, music-service and actor-rendering work since preview 0.1.3. The interpreter safety net remains enabled for unproved contexts.
  • Preview launcher settings now stay inside the extracted package, alongside its own saves and achievement progress.

Download the Windows x64 ZIP, extract it into a fresh writable folder, and open Setup Lagoon.cmd or lagoon.Companion.exe. Both the launcher and game EXEs are included; no compiler or .NET installation is required. Bring your own clean, unheadered Lagoon USA ROM. Your ROM is checked and read in place.

Original SNES audio and the owner-approved converted X68000 soundtrack are selectable in Companion. The bundled album and tiny credited cameo artwork retain their separate copyrights; see CREDITS.md and licenses/.

Tested: focused achievement/storage/input/source-guard tests, a live secret unlock and persistent progress, real WASAPI chime tests, 1,067 matched presentations / 9 checkpoints / 108 components against the prior build and exact installed candidate, and fresh-package setup, launcher and native OpenGL startup. Every archive entry was verified; local audio test files were deduplicated after byte verification.

This remains a preview. The owner/friends' uninterrupted campaign playtest is still pending; these focused checks do not certify every achievement or a universal locked 60 FPS. Keep existing saves before moving to a fresh extracted preview.

Windows preview 0.1.3 — native projectiles and loaded widescreen actors

Choose a tag to compare

@rages4calm rages4calm released this 21 Oct 21:01

This preview adds native projectile-loop execution and fixes supported widescreen actors disappearing after compatible Elf Field state loads.

  • The projectile update loop now runs natively in its qualified mode, including original animation, default effects, homing and allocation. Other modes and unknown targets retain the interpreter safety net.
  • Successful full state loads can recover the complete source-qualified ordinary actor atlas for room08/09. The live Elf Field test renders the added actors while keeping the original center picture exact; altered or unknown resident graphics safely decline.
  • Shared absolute-periodic APU batching now uses the same progress policy across native and interpreter execution. Boot and legacy sound handshakes are preserved.
  • Buffered presentation diagnostics separate upload, draw, swap, guest work, audio waits and checkpoint I/O. Focused 1080p Enhanced/OpenGL measurements average about60 displayed frames per second; they do not certify every area or eliminate all host spikes.

Final native/interpreter casting controls match1,402 presentations,10 complete checkpoints, audio events and clocks. Installed affected-route checks match2,291 presentations and11 complete checkpoints. These are focused assisted tests; uninterrupted campaign playtesting remains pending.

Download the Windows x64 ZIP, extract the entire package and open Setup Lagoon.cmd or lagoon.Companion.exe. Supply your own clean USA ROM, Apply, run Game setup and press Play. The native game EXE, self-contained Companion, icons and optional approved X68000 soundtrack are included. No compiler or separate .NET installation is needed.

Keep your existing saves when upgrading. The interpreter remains enabled. Unsupported actor/effect forms and occasional frame-time spikes remain work in progress. See the README and playing guide for controls and reporting issues.

Lagoon Windows preview 0.1.2

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@rages4calm rages4calm released this 21 Oct 19:52

Windows playtest preview with native enemy optimizations and a guarded widescreen transition fix.

  • Reduced enemy-related slowdown: the focused busy Elf Field route now holds the intended 30 game updates per second with approximately 60 displayed frames per second. Original AI and collision remain active.
  • Added guarded native enemy tile sampling, movement, offscreen projection, sprite packing and direction/velocity commands.
  • Fixed a brief narrow-view gap before the Voloh-to-Elf Field loader starts. Unsupported content still falls back safely.
  • Verified both feature manifests and Enhanced shaders match the executable. This also fixes a stale-catalog error in the local development installation.
  • Kept the interpreter safety net. A proposed outer projectile-loop promotion was withheld after strict audio timing checks found a difference.

Download and extract the whole Windows ZIP. Open Setup Lagoon.cmd or lagoon.Companion.exe, select your clean USA ROM, Apply and run Game setup, then Play. The native EXE, self-contained Companion, icons and optional X68000 soundtrack are included. No ROM is bundled.

The final installed game passed focused cold-load combat and transition checks. The actual staged package passed setup, Apply/Revert, 8x rewards, soundtrack selection and native startup; every archived member was hash-checked. This remains experimental: occasional frame-time spikes and unsupported special rendering forms remain. The owner and friends will perform the uninterrupted campaign playtest.

Lagoon Recomp — Windows Preview 0.1.1

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@rages4calm rages4calm released this 21 Oct 18:59

This preview improves escorts, tablet guidance, combat presentation and everyday settings. Bring your own clean Lagoon USA ROM; the ZIP includes the playable game EXE, self-contained Companion Launcher and optional X68000 soundtrack.

Changes since 0.1.0:

  • Giles/Thor navigate around walls and stairs without replaying an old movement backlog. Nasir can pass through an active ordinary escort when turning back.
  • Fixed Thor oscillating near the second tablet when follower speed was enabled. His scripted destination walk now keeps its original precise steps; ordinary following remains faster.
  • Map hints and objective markers for the Faith/Wish/Hope tablet quest. Hope is the chest near Philips Castle, rather than another Thor destination.
  • Map on controller L2; quick audio settings on R2 or Ctrl+comma. Adjust master and X68000 music volume while the game is paused.
  • Keyboard, controller and system-hotkey editors in Companion. Independent EXP and gold reward selectors through 8x, retaining the previous 1.5x EXP option. Prices and existing saved totals are unchanged.
  • A longer, more readable blade for supported poses when Sword reach is enabled, using the original sword colors and depth rules.
  • Balanced X68000 cue levels, including the abrupt Voloh volume increase. Original SNES music remains selectable; sound effects remain original.
  • Coherent full-width outgoing frames during supported loader fades, plus more source-guarded native enemy coordinate work in Elf Field and nearby areas.

Focused verification included the original Thor dialogue/lead/Wish sequence, subsequent native following, real OpenGL/EPX 21:9 Elf Field movement and combat, a 32:9 Gold Cave loader route, and an installed cold replay matching 1,412 ordered presentations and 36 complete checkpoints. These are assisted checks, not an uninterrupted campaign playthrough.

Enemy-related game-logic slowdown, occasional frame-time spikes and unsupported widescreen actors/effects/transitions remain work in progress. This is not a locked-60-FPS or fully native release. The interpreter safety net remains enabled. Existing clipping in supplied music cannot be repaired by playback attenuation.

Extract the entire Windows ZIP into a fresh writable folder, open Setup Lagoon.cmd, select your clean USA ROM, Apply, then run Game setup. Settings and saves stay in that folder's local directory. Use normal in-game saves for progress; development save states can be incompatible. MP3 listening exports remain available from the previous release.

Lagoon Recomp — Windows Preview 0.1.0

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@rages4calm rages4calm released this 21 Oct 15:30

A playable Windows x64 preview for community playtesting. Includes the actual game executable and self-contained Companion, each with a custom icon. The interpreter safety net remains enabled.

Download Lagoon-Windows-v0.1.0-preview.1.zip to play. It includes the prepared X68000 music. Lagoon-X68000-MP3.zip is an optional listening album, not an extra installation step.

  1. Extract the whole Windows ZIP into a writable folder.
  2. Open Setup Lagoon.cmd or lagoon.Companion.exe.
  3. On Game, enter your clean USA ROM's full path and click Apply.
  4. Open Game setup, Run setup, then Play. No compiler, .NET installation or downloads are needed.

Bring your own unheadered 1 MiB Lagoon USA ROM, SHA256 46c811f0cacffe8f20e1d63072d25d7c47e9bb3fd5124851fd05aca9884d21fb. No ROM, extracted game graphics, generated C source or saves are bundled.

  • Widescreen/custom scene rendering, Enhanced original pixels and individual QoL settings.
  • Permanent faster menus, escort following and Giles first aid.
  • Explored map with Nasir, trail, discovered exits and treasure. Press M or Select+L; gameplay pauses while browsing.
  • Audio has one Original SNES / X68000 selector. The 40-track lossless pack preserves original loop points; 17 verified cues use X68000 music. Other cues use SNES music; original sound effects remain.
  • All 40 tracks also have tagged MP3 listening copies and a playlist, including nine unused tracks.
  • Six more projectile effects run natively, with guarded fallback for unqualified paths.

Settings, mod preferences, saves and exploration stay in the extracted folder's local directory. F1 loads slot 1; Shift+F1 saves it. Extract upgrades into a fresh folder and preserve your earlier saves.

This is not an uninterrupted campaign-tested or fully native release. Special actor/widescreen gaps and frame-time spikes remain; unsupported display paths can use the original view. X68000 playback restarts on save-state loads, and run-ahead uses SNES audio. The outer projectile loop remains interpreted after an unsafe private candidate was rejected.

Focused checks covered native effects, actual casting/damage, clean ZIP setup, soundtrack switching, long-path save loading/saving, and installed runtime repeats. The owner and friends will perform the complete natural playthrough. Report the area, actions, settings, and whether a new game reproduces an issue.
