Glance 1.5.9

Glance 1.5.9 is a major update focused on interactive folder previews, reliable Open With actions, native macOS 26 design, and safer preview rendering.

Important

Glance 1.5.9 requires an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 26 or later. Intel Macs and earlier macOS versions are no longer supported.

Highlights

Interactive folder previews

Folders can now be explored directly inside Quick Look:

  • Expandable recursive folder trees
  • Finder-style file and folder icons
  • Progressive thumbnails for images, videos, and PDFs
  • Search and native outline sorting
  • In-place previews for nested files and packages
  • Double-click or press Space to preview a selected item
  • Open top-level or nested files with any compatible application

Hidden files are skipped. Folder traversal is bounded to 500 items and five levels to keep Quick Look responsive, while thumbnail work is limited and cancelled when the preview closes.

Reliable Open With support

The custom Open With menu now works for both individual files and items selected inside folder previews.

  • Opens files once with the selected compatible application
  • Does not change the default application association
  • Keeps Glance hidden without stealing focus
  • Uses a sandbox-safe handoff between the Quick Look extension and Glance
  • Validates applications, files, requests, and responses before opening
  • Reports failures unobtrusively inside the Quick Look utility bar

Native macOS 26 appearance

Glance now follows the native macOS 26 Liquid Glass hierarchy:

  • Removed the redundant inner border from Quick Look previews
  • Added adaptive window materials to the main, Supported Files, and Settings windows
  • Uses standard macOS controls with native Liquid Glass styling
  • Avoids nested glass containers and per-row visual effects
  • Supports light and dark appearance, inactive windows, Reduce Transparency, and Increase Contrast

The Supported Files window is also resizable, scrollable, properly aligned, accessible to VoiceOver, and able to wrap long file-type descriptions correctly.

New and improved previews

  • Added .ini source-code previews
  • Added Quick Look support for folders
  • Improved source code, Markdown, archive, notebook, TSV, and nested-file previews
  • Improved dynamic file-type registration
  • Hardened archive extraction and preview resource limits
  • Added safer local WebKit rendering with remote assets blocked
  • Improved thumbnail cancellation, navigation, status updates, and teardown behavior

Maintenance and reliability

  • Updated Glance to version 1.5.9, build 19
  • Updated direct Go dependencies and refreshed transitive locks
  • Pinned reproducible Go, SwiftFormat, and SwiftLint tool versions
  • Expanded automated coverage for folders, thumbnails, nested previews, Open With, windows, file types, and resource limits
  • Updated release automation for macOS/Xcode 26 Apple-silicon runners
  • Release artifacts are verified as arm64-only before publication

Installation

  1. Download both attached files:

    • Glance-1.5.9.dmg
    • Glance-1.5.9.dmg.sha256

  2. From their download directory, verify the disk image:

    shasum -a 256 -c Glance-1.5.9.dmg.sha256

  3. Open the verified DMG and drag Glance.app into Applications.

  4. If macOS blocks the app, remove its quarantine attribute:

    xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Glance.app

  5. Launch Glance once to register the Quick Look extension. Keep Glance running while using previews; its Dock icon can be hidden from Settings.

Note

This release is currently unsigned and unnotarized. Verify the attached SHA-256 checksum before bypassing quarantine.
