LADE

Lightweight Architecture for Detection of Energy Depletion Attacks in LoRaWAN end devices

The Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) is a widely adopted Internet of Things (IoT) technology in the industrial, agricultural, and academic sectors, providing low-power devices with excellent cost-effectiveness. With its strong adoption, security concerns with LoRaWAN are growing every day. In this context, a specific type of attack known as Energy Depletion Attack (EDA) aims to drain the battery of end devices until they become unavailable, posing a potential threat to the entire network and increasing the maintenance costs of the infrastructure.

In this context, LADE proposes and implements a detection method based on statistical distance metrics to identify anomalies in energy consumption of sensors. In this repository we have published the prototipe of LADE developed for two environments:

  • LADE for ContikiOS: A prototype implemented for ContikiOS version 3. The prototipe can be executed in Cooja simulator.
  • LADE for x86/64 PC: A prototype to evaluate the system into personal computers.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/JSEN.2024.3504259 This work investigated the potential of the most common LoRaWAN attacks to deplete the energy of end devices. It presented a classification of these attacks and proposed a method to characterize their potential to deplete the energy of end devices. It then reviewed the most recent countermeasures against those attacks capable of depleting the energy of sensors.

This work presents the LADE proposal, a host-based detection system for EDAs detection.
