Vimdow 1.0.0

The first binary release of Vimdow, a keyboard-driven window manager for macOS. Press Control–Option–A to enter command mode, then move, resize, snap, and switch windows with hjkl, counts, and the other Vim habits already in your fingers.

This is the Swift 6 rewrite of the 2013 Objective-C app, signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

Install

1. Download Vimdow.zip below and open it.
2. Move Vimdow.app to Applications and open it.
3. Allow it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
4. Press Control–Option–A to enter command mode. Press , there to open Settings, and Escape to leave.

Vimdow has no Dock icon. Open it again from Applications to reach Settings.

Highlights

• Move and resize with h j k l, using Option or Shift to resize. Counts repeat, so 12j moves down 240 points. Steps glide into place, and held keys move continuously.
• Snap and tile: 0 and $ for the left and right edges, gg and G for the top and bottom, zz to center. Control–W then H J K L fills a half of the display, or O the whole display.
• Undo and redo each window's changes with u and Control–R.
• Move between displays with Control–Option–K / L. Each window's frame is remembered per display.
• Switch windows by number with q, or search by app name with /, then n and N.
• Settings for step sizes, animation, stopping at display edges, first-visit behavior on a new display, and all five global shortcuts.

Requirements

• macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or Intel.
• Accessibility permission. Vimdow uses it only to move other apps' windows. It makes no network connections and collects no analytics.

Upgrading from a source build

Builds from source were previously named VimdowManager.app. Before installing:

1. Quit the old app and delete it.
2. Remove its Accessibility entry with the minus button.

Your settings and shortcuts carry over.
