Choose a tag to compare

@redmundmcmund redmundmcmund released this 11 Oct 12:05

Ottershelf is a native Android client for self-hosted BookOrbit servers. Powered by BookOrbit; not an official BookOrbit release.

Install

  1. Download ottershelf-0.1.20.apk below on an Android phone or tablet.
  2. Open it and allow installing from that app when Android asks.
  3. Sign in with your BookOrbit server's address (https only), username and password.

Requirements: Android 12 or later, a 64-bit ARM device (arm64-v8a), and a BookOrbit server reachable over HTTPS with a certificate Android trusts.

This APK is signed with the same key as the Google Play build (package io.github.ottershelf), so either one updates the other without reinstalling. It installs over earlier versions.

What's new in 0.1.20

  • Footnotes in a pop-up. Tapping a footnote marker in a book now shows the note in a small sheet over the page, instead of jumping to the notes at the end of the book. That jump also moved your reading position there. Close the sheet to carry on reading where you were, or use Open in book to go to the note.
    • Works with properly marked EPUB footnotes and with the usual unmarked kinds, like a "*", "†" or superscript number linking to a notes section.
    • Other links, such as the contents and cross-references, are followed as before.

What's new in 0.1.19

  • Add any book to a collection: from the book's page (the folder icon in the toolbar) or the long-press quick view (Add to collection).
  • Add several books at once: in a library grid, tap the tick icon in the toolbar to start selecting. Tap covers to pick books, then tap Add to collection in the bar at the bottom. The sheet shows which collections already hold all or some of them. Tapping one adds the rest, or takes them all out if it holds them all. You can also make a new collection with them in it.

What's new in 0.1.18

  • Reading sessions count only what was read. A book opened at a saved place partway into a chapter used to log the session from the chapter's start, because the reader shows that first and then moves to the saved place. A page or two of reading could show as dozens of pages in the reading log. Sessions now start where the reader actually lands. Sessions recorded before this update keep their numbers.

What's new in 0.1.17

  • Want to read → collections: marking a book Want to read offers to add it to one of your collections, or a new one.
  • Delete a reading: a reading marked as given up by mistake can be deleted from History (the pencil on its row). The server then works out the book's status again.
  • Page counts: books whose metadata has no page count get one looked up from the server's metadata providers.
  • Offline-first ebooks: EPUB, KEPUB, MOBI, AZW3, AZW and FB2 books are kept on the device the first time they are opened. Reading progress made offline syncs when a connection is back. You can turn this off in Settings → Offline.
  • Android 12 to 14 are supported, as well as 15 and later.
  • Covers that aren't 2:3 show in full over a blurred backdrop, instead of being cropped.
