The documentation encourages use of jsonc over json5 but apparently does not look for it.

Per the note on that docs page:

Renovate supports JSONC for .json files and any config files without file extension (e.g. .renovaterc). We also recommend you prefer using JSONC within a .json file to using a .json5 file if you want to add comments.

Note that we're not currently looking for a .jsonc but that we'll parse .json as a JSONC file

That's a bad idea because you're asking users to create invalid JSON files so they can't use their linters.

I'm also digging into this at the moment and getting rather confused.

This is extremely confusing DX, and as other people have mentioned, leaves us creating invalid JSON files (or using workarounds to get Renovate to pickup our configs correctly).

Seems like adding support for .jsonc configs was deemed out of scope in this PR: #36141
Someone raised a PR (#36630) to help add support for it later on, but the PR was rejected with the reasoning that "We will implement this a different way".

What's the status on actually adding support for .jsonc extension?

Not adding support for .jsonc config files at the same time as adding support for reading .json files as jsonc made no sense to me. 😕
