A new Ubuntu release's kernel is checked in its first scan. The Ubuntu
kernel feed was refreshed for the releases the fleet already ran, so the
first host of a new release -- the first 24.04 machine, say -- read "feed not
fetched yet" until the next scheduled refresh, up to a day later. A scan that
meets an Ubuntu release with no fresh feed now fetches it there and then, once
per release per batch, and checks the kernel in the same scan. A failed fetch
leaves the scan whole and the kernel saying why; it is not retried for every
host. Never when the feed is switched off, nor in demo mode.

Old kernels get a command, not just advice. When kernels nothing runs
carry CVEs, the kernel card now offers the distribution's own way to remove
them -- apt autoremove --purge, dnf remove --oldinstallonly, zypper purge-kernels -- each of which keeps the running kernel and the newest. apt
also offers other packages nothing depends on, and the card says to review
its list. Alpine and Arch replace the kernel in place, so nothing is offered.
