English fan translation of Macross Triangle Frontier for PSP (ULJS-00321, v1.01), including the Academy mode and English subtitles for the in-mission radio voice.
Apply
Recommended: Use the latest Retro Trans app. Click Refresh catalog, open Automatic, select your original Japanese ISO, choose 0.1.25 (or Latest), and select a new output filename. The app downloads the matching patch and verifies the result.
Manual patching: DeltaPatcher and xdelta3 accept the same asset:
| Your source image | Patch |

xdelta3 -d -s "Macross - Triangle Frontier (Japan).iso" MacrossTriangleFrontier-English-0.1.25.xdelta "Macross Triangle Frontier English 0.1.25.iso"
Original Japanese ISO (v1.01): 1,676,050,432 bytes; SHA-256 ebfebecfdc0980c5d7a78baac9aee36a393019795bf376aaf4838fed07b9531c.

The upgrade patch applies only to the unmodified 0.1.23 image (SHA-256 085d09a53dc606c96bf42bb0f52709dc7392175ef953ce4e3c05fc500bf8f311). From 0.1.22, patch the original ISO with the full patch.

What's changed
Bug fix: Campaign froze, then crashed, after clearing the Macross Zero era, and every later attempt to open Campaign froze. Clearing the era unlocks Survival Mode, and the game copies that notice with a fixed-length routine that stops at the notice's original address. The English text had been moved elsewhere, so the copy never stopped. The notice now stays where the game expects it. A Hangar tip used the same routine and would have frozen the same way; it is fixed too.
Saves are not affected: with 0.1.25, a save from 0.1.23 that froze opens Campaign again, shows the pending unlocks and lets you switch eras.
Also in this release (from the unreleased 0.1.24 build):
- Academy schedule: class descriptions were cut mid-word ("Core st / udy of"). The description box now wraps between words.
- Two system messages (network standby, wireless-play confirmation) are now copied in full, and a name label that showed "Unkno" now shows "???".
What's included
- Menus and help: the main, single-player, network and option menus, help bars, system and save messages, unit, weapon, pilot and operator descriptions, skills, player titles, records, the shop and the sound test.
- Story text: era narration, mission titles, objectives and briefings, and in-mission objectives.
- Academy mode: every campus scene is translated, about 24,500 lines: story events, friendship routes, everyday scenes, schedule, status and character creation. The Japanese honorifics are kept in the campus text (Pinon-chan, Hilda-sensei, Klan-senpai).
- Radio voice subtitles: the in-mission radio cut-ins have no text in the original game. Each clip was transcribed and translated, and the patched game shows the English line under the cut-in while it plays. 16,957 of the 18,759 clips have a subtitle; the rest are silent placeholders, shouts without words, or narration already shown as text.
- Textures: 597 textures with Japanese text are redrawn in English (menus, the Academy screens and student ID card, buttons and labels, HUD banners, mission title cards). The official series logos keep their original designs.
- Font: a proportional English font (GenEi LateGo) with its own 4x glyph page. In PPSSPP at 2x–4x rendering, game text is drawn sharp without a texture pack.
- Title screen: the version and the group site are shown at the bottom right.
This project was ported from the sister projects Macross Ultimate Frontier and Macross Ace Frontier (same engine), reusing their glossary, their translation of identical strings and voice clips, the font patch, the texture redraw and the voice subtitle system. See the changelog.
Release status
This is an early build. Further proofreading and full in-game playtesting are needed. File and patch verification shows that the intended data is included and that the patch reproduces the release image. It does not certify emulator or console behavior. In PPSSPP, the title and main menus, the Academy opening and character creation, the campaign mission list and briefings, and the first missions (intro, radio subtitles, allied units) were checked. For this build, a save past the Macross Zero era was loaded: the Campaign unlocks, era switching and the start of a mission were checked. Most missions and most Academy scenes have not been played with this build.
Known limitations:
- Only voice clips that the mission script plays are subtitled. Voices played elsewhere (menus, character select samples, the Academy) are not. The parts of a long subtitle advance at even steps through the clip, not with the phrasing.
- The symbols key of the name-entry keyboard is still in Japanese.
- On the Academy New / Load screen the header is cut to "Academ", and on the Load screen the date of a save is drawn over "Mihoshi Academy".
- Some redrawn screens (Academy status and date screens, gallery, settings, shop, network rooms, results) were checked in preview images only, not in game.
- The 4x font is designed for emulators at 2x resolution or higher. At native 1x resolution the same glyphs are scaled down.
- The image carries a decrypted EBOOT. PPSSPP and custom firmware ISO drivers load it; official firmware without custom firmware does not. Real hardware has not been tried.
Boot the patched ISO fresh and load a normal save. Save states keep the old text, fonts and textures in memory.
How it was translated
This is a machine translation, produced with large language models and then reviewed and edited using scene context and a researched glossary. Names and terms follow the Macross Wiki and avoid Robotech names. Most radio clips are identical to Macross Ultimate Frontier's and Macross Ace Frontier's and reuse their reviewed subtitles; the remaining clips were transcribed locally with Whisper large-v3 (faster-whisper), and uncertain readings are marked in the sources. Human proofreading and playtesting are welcome.
Acknowledgements
- GenEi LateGo © okoneya.jp, used for the English glyphs (SIL Open Font License 1.1; the licence is in the repository).
- PPSSPP, whose PRX decryption and debugger were used for the EBOOT tools and testing.
- Whisper (OpenAI) and faster-whisper, used to transcribe the radio voice.

What's changed
Bug fix: in the Academy, the scene after the EX-Gear practical test stayed black with only the date shown, and the game could not continue. The English text insertion had changed 262 numbers in 54 campus scripts that are not text (ids and flags that happened to match the position of a Japanese line). Only the text is changed now. Other scenes using those numbers (sounds, effects, events) are restored to the original values too.
If you are stuck on that black screen with 0.1.22: patch to 0.1.23 and load a save from before the practical test (a save state made during the test also works with the 0.1.23 image).
