Toniator b819fd4 — garment preflight test build
Test-only Linux x86_64 candidate from b819fd4. G2a remains work in progress awaiting acceptance. No source delta was added during packaging; the internal version still reports 0.3.3.
Download the AppImage, SHA256SUMS, TESTING.md and optional compact fixture/provenance ZIP. The AppImage is 118,348,280 bytes, SHA-256 9643e6fc6577c2ec7a687283d71fdbe132062c569ebac652bfba50f2ed00e86a.
Verified: CLI rendering of both immutable samples and advisory preflight; actual Fedora/private-Sway GTK startup and AT-SPI discovery. The 98-ELF audit requires at most glibc 2.39, with no unresolved non-system dependencies.
Not verified: Debian 13 runtime, full GUI import/edit/preview/export/reopen, GNOME/Mutter/portal behavior, heavy-work performance or physical printing. GUI sample-preview readback was interrupted by an executor transport disconnect. Debian glibc 2.41 meets the static threshold but still needs a launch test. Both private sessions are stopped.
Use disposable project copies: this candidate saves schema 11, which the older public 0.3.3 application cannot read. No desktop preflight review interface is included; ordinary export remains available. TON-013 is deferred, without an SVG fix.
This prerelease is not marked Latest. Existing releases and main remain unchanged. Public fixtures only; no personal artwork or GUI screenshots are included.
Toniator 0.3.3 — Sharper previews and scalable exports
Toniator 0.3.3 — Sharper previews and scalable exports
Toniator 0.3.3 is a prerelease for Linux x86_64. It includes the AppImage and
Flatpak packages. The currently published portable Windows development build
remains a separate 0.3.2 build; this release does not include a Windows 0.3.3
package or claim that its new features were verified on Windows.
What changed
- Zoomed and panned previews rerasterize the visible viewport at its physical
display scale, keeping artwork sharp while retaining shared Preview/Source
zoom and pan. - PNG export offers 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, and Custom output sizes. The 1x default
uses the document canvas, independent of preview zoom, and the dialog shows
the selected pixel dimensions. - Video export offers 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, and Custom sizes based on the
document canvas. Invalid or over-limit sizes disable export with an inline
explanation. The native 1x route and existing codec choices remain available. - The Pattern Wizard guides edits through Family, Family options,
Drawing, and Review. Its controls follow the selected Pattern's
capabilities; applying the reviewed result is one undoable document change,
while saving a reusable Pattern remains separate. - Feature size now adjusts both mark fineness and site spacing or density
across supported scatter and parametric families. Saved Pattern recipes stay
unchanged. Scatter offers Random, Poisson disk, Jittered cells, and Clustered,
with optional ordinary or artwork-weighted Lloyd relaxation. - Wizard previews show repeated guide and curve paths and point sites as
non-exported overlays. Setting descriptions and About/help entry points make
the Pattern workflow easier to understand. - The source includes native MSVC Windows build instructions and the Windows
filesystem support. Build instructions and the separately versioned Windows
development download are described in the
README.
Known limits
Fine full-size Review can still take a long time for dense Poisson Patterns
with weighted Lloyd relaxation. Preview responsiveness improvements do not
resolve that separate performance issue. See
known issues.
The broader scatter-variety report also remains open.
The available Windows development ZIP contains 0.3.2 debug binaries. Windows
sequence-video UI automation remains incomplete, and new 0.3.3 features have
not been validated on Windows. See the native Windows build guide
for current coverage and limits.
Verification
The release packages passed CLI version, raster/vector output, metadata, icon,
provenance, and checksum checks. The accepted features have source-build GUI
coverage. A fresh GUI startup check of these packaged binaries could not be
completed in the release environment and remains unverified.
Toniator 0.3.2 Windows development checkpoint - 2026-09-27
Native Windows x64 development checkpoint of Toniator 0.3.2. This prerelease provides the real GUI and headless CLI as an unsigned portable ZIP of the verified debug-profile executables, with GTK runtime libraries, icons, schemas, and release CRT dependencies. It is not a new optimized build or installer.
- Windows handle-bound storage and media transport preserve the shared filesystem/publication guarantees, with Linux implementations retained.
- Fine Feature size 0.5 connection previews use exact spatial pruning. Sixteen adjacency tests and 1,920 native comparisons match the previous geometry; representative previews complete in about 40 seconds. Progress still advances per output with roughly ten-second gaps.
- The Windows executable and live window now use Toniator's application icon.
- FFmpeg is not redistributed. Run the included
Setup-Media.ps1explicitly for a checksum-verified upstream FFmpeg 8.1.2 download; no runtime download or machine-wide installation occurs. The matching source ZIP contains retained native sources, compiled Rust dependency sources, recipes, and the checkpoint source archive.
Verification includes native locked GUI/CLI builds, focused Windows storage/media/cancellation checks, local Fedora builds/checks, geometry regression/differential checks, and native icon/window inspection. Package CLI portability is checked using an extracted folder with spaces/Unicode and a PATH containing only the package and Windows directories. This does not establish clean-machine certification or user acceptance. Hosted CI is prepared but has not run.
Known limitations: native GUI sequence-video export remains pending; GTK UI Automation Value.SetValue did not edit the tested entry; visible and accessible progress text differ after video cancellation. An automated shutdown sequence involving the main and welcome windows produced an AccessKit unknown-child panic in one native check. Normal project-window close is checked separately. No signing or installer is provided.
Checkpoint: 6ccfe53334537dc42df4ef2d96ae49ec503f8477
Download the Windows ZIP, extract it, and launch Toniator.vbs. Use Toniator-CLI.cmd from a terminal. For video workflows, run the included Setup-Media.ps1 once.
Final package checks also pass native GUI launch, project rendering, second-instance forwarding from a Unicode path, and normal closure with exit code 0 and empty stderr. GLib session-bus and spawn helpers are included. The source ZIP and SHA256SUMS.txt accompany the binary ZIP.
Toniator 0.3.2 — New application identity and icon
Toniator 0.3.2 — New application identity and icon
This prerelease updates Toniator's desktop identity and icon and cleans up the
public source repository. It retains the halftone, Pattern, Preset, and animation
workflows from 0.3.1.
What changed
- The application ID is now
io.github.ricperry.Toniator, matching the
GitHub repository owner. GTK, Flatpak, desktop metadata, and icon names agree. - The application and package icons use the new RGB halftone design.
- The README and installation instructions use the current release and icon.
- The main source tree now focuses on the current application, specifications,
examples, tests, and user/build documentation. Legacy implementations,
development plans, and design experiments are no longer tracked on main.
Historical commits and older releases remain available. - Package binaries are release attachments, rather than files in the source tree.
Flatpak users: the identifier changed
The previous ID was com.sbdd.Toniator. The new Flatpak installs as a
separate application, not an in-place update to the old ID.
flatpak install --user ./Toniator-0.3.2-x86_64.flatpak
flatpak run io.github.ricperry.ToniatorThe new private data directory is ~/.var/app/io.github.ricperry.Toniator/.
Existing settings and personal Patterns under ~/.var/app/com.sbdd.Toniator/
are not automatically migrated or deleted. Keep the old installation until
you have recovered the settings or personal Patterns you need. Project files
remain in their existing locations and can be opened if their format is supported.
Native and AppImage personal data paths are unchanged.
Downloads
Choose one x86_64 package:
- AppImage: make executable and run. Requires glibc 2.39 or newer.
If FUSE mounting is unavailable, setAPPIMAGE_EXTRACT_AND_RUN=1. - Flatpak: install the bundle; GNOME Platform 50 may be downloaded.
This is a GitHub-distributed bundle, not a Flathub listing.
Both contain the GUI, CLI, and private software media tools. The Flatpak has
no blanket home or network access. Download SHA256SUMS with the package
and verify using sha256sum --ignore-missing -c SHA256SUMS.
build-info.json records build provenance and artifact hashes.
This remains a prerelease. Broader distribution compatibility and exhaustive
GNOME/Mutter/portal behavior are not established. Known issues are listed in
the repository's ISSUES.md. Older document schemas remain unsupported; this
release does not add project-format migration.
Toniator 0.3.1 — Reliable editing and source response
Toniator 0.3.1 — Reliable editing and source response
This development release improves RGB/CMYK editing, source interpretation, and
video export in the native Linux application.
Highlights
- Independent source controls: Advanced Settings has separate Fill response
and Source weighting groups, each with its own source-channel mapping and tonal
adjustments. Patterns remain reusable recipes without embedded source mappings. - More tonal control: black/white levels, gamma, centered contrast, and a
cutoff for suppressing small responses. Weighting also has its own strength
and response curve. Eligible numeric settings animate through normal Start/End
editing. - Reliable ALL editing: changed compatible settings apply to every channel,
including existing overrides, while untouched settings are preserved. - Consistent transforms: Rotation and X/Y offsets work with artwork-weighted
patterns. Weighting is recalculated at the transformed positions; neutral
transforms restore source alignment. - Clearer video export: separate Export image and Export video actions, plus
explicit frame rate and duration with a derived frame count. Video sources
initialize timing from their source; still artwork can have a defined animation
duration. PNG sequences, lossless FFV1/Matroska, and optional AV1/WebM remain
available.
Editing fixes
- Pattern Wizard Apply requires a current successful construction check, with
guidance for invalid Spiral settings. - Scatter styles retain their parameters when switching between styles;
unconstrained sampling is labeled Random. - Advanced source edits preserve expanded channels and scroll position. One
Reset to defaults button resets all Advanced settings for ALL or the selected
channel, including paint. - Switching color models uses the document's baseline Pattern rather than a
single channel's Pattern override. - Numeric edits defer GTK control replacement until the input callback finishes,
addressing the reported CMYK rotation/offset editing problem. - Selecting a video-export directory no longer triggers the reported borrow panic.
- Feature size, Coverage, editable minimum fill, and X/Y offsets have clearer
placement in the main inspector.
Downloads and scope
Choose the x86_64 AppImage or Flatpak bundle. Both contain optimized release
builds of the GUI, CLI, and private open-source media tools. Checksums and build
provenance accompany the packages. Flatpak requires the GNOME 50 runtime;
the AppImage requires glibc 2.39 or newer.
Toniator remains pre-release. Current formats are document schema 10,
document-Preset format 3, and Pattern format 5; superseded development formats
are rejected without automatic migration. Keep original artwork and older
project files when evaluating this release.
Audio, playback, timeline scrubbing, hardware acceleration, and a curves graph
editor are outside this release. Verification includes native PNG/SVG outputs,
focused behavioral tests, and private GTK/Wayland checks; broader distribution
and desktop integration coverage is not claimed.
Toniator 0.3.0 — Video and animation
Toniator 0.3.0 adds video import, animated Pattern settings, and video export
to the native Linux halftone-art workflow. Open moving artwork, design its Start
and End states with the normal editing controls, and render a PNG sequence or
a finished video. Both packages include the graphical application, CLI, and
their own software media tools.
New video and animation features
- Open video, animated images, or an explicitly ordered image sequence. Still
images can also supply the artwork for animated Patterns. - Switch between Start frame and End frame below the canvas. Animate
20 continuous property types with interpolation, including Pattern size,
rotation, placement, sampling response, and opacity where supported. - Assign colors using the selected frame's color picker or HEX entry, with
alpha and color/hue animation for RGB and all CMYK channels. - Export lossless FFV1/Matroska video, preserving rendered RGB and alpha,
or a numbered PNG sequence. Optional AV1/WebM produces a smaller,
lossy sharing file with an explicit opaque background. The CLI also supports
SVG sequences and exact frame/time selection. - Choose an output folder or retain a personal default. Video encoding uses
private temporary PNG frames, with cancellation and recovery options. - Save source media and editable animation settings in portable
.toniator
projects. Start/End editing preserves independent channel settings and resets
only affected End settings when a Pattern changes.
Other improvements
- Source-free document Presets: Save preset writes
.toniator-preset;
Load preset... also accepts a valid current.toniatorproject and keeps
the destination artwork and timing. - More representative overall preview progress and more frequent updates.
- Corrected Preset-menu availability after Pattern edits and wizard dismissal.
- Separate welcome window, scrollable Recent Files, and bounded warning text
that fixes excessive main-window height. The settings divider now resizes
normally, and frame/comparison controls share the canvas toolbar. - Opening a second file forwards it through the running application's normal
unsaved-document decision.
Install
Choose one x86_64 package from this release. For AppImage:
chmod +x Toniator-0.3.0-x86_64.AppImage
./Toniator-0.3.0-x86_64.AppImageThe AppImage requires glibc 2.39 or newer. If FUSE is unavailable, prefix the
launch command with APPIMAGE_EXTRACT_AND_RUN=1.
For Flatpak:
flatpak install --user ./Toniator-0.3.0-x86_64.flatpak
flatpak run com.sbdd.ToniatorThe GNOME 50 runtime may be downloaded separately. This bundle is not a Flathub
listing or an automatic-update feed. Flatpak keeps its own settings and personal
Pattern library; installing it does not copy the native/AppImage library.
Download SHA256SUMS beside the packages and verify with:
sha256sum --ignore-missing -c SHA256SUMSbuild-info.json records exact package checksums and source/runtime provenance.
The larger packages include FFmpeg/FFprobe, software codecs, and corresponding
source archives, so a separate host FFmpeg installation is unnecessary.
Scope and compatibility
- This is a pre-release. Current development project and Preset formats are
required; obsolete formats are rejected rather than automatically migrated. - Outputs are silent: source audio is not exported. Preview selection is
Start/End only; playback and timeline scrubbing are not included. - Variable-frame-rate sources are sampled at the selected project frame rate;
frames may repeat or be skipped. Rendering complex artwork can be expensive. - These packages contain the accepted implementation at
0f86251, recorded by
acceptance checkpoint681959b. The subsequent separate image/video export
menu change is not included; use Export to open the animation sheet and
Export current frame… there for a single PNG/SVG.
Verified with focused tests, native PNG/SVG inspection, exact ten-frame RGBA
FFV1 checks, alpha and AV1 witnesses, private Wayland UI tests, and isolated
Flatpak portal checks. See the implementation record
and known issues.
Toniator 0.2.0
Toniator turns still images into halftone artwork made from dots, lines, curves,
and shapes, with editable SVG and PNG output. This native Linux pre-release
includes the GTK4 application and headless CLI.
Highlights
- RGB, CMYK, and source-color workflows with independent channel Patterns.
- Seventeen built-in Patterns, a guided Pattern Wizard, and personal Pattern
save/update/copy/rename/trash management. - Authored guides, shapes, and curved motifs; precise numeric Pattern size.
- Portable
.toniatorprojects containing source artwork and editable settings. - Startup screen, Recent Files, document Undo/Redo, and save prompts on Close/Exit.
- System light/dark preference support and the author's new application icon.
- First AppImage and Flatpak packages using
com.sbdd.Toniator.
Install
Choose one x86_64 package. For AppImage:
chmod +x Toniator-0.2.0-x86_64.AppImage
./Toniator-0.2.0-x86_64.AppImageThe AppImage requires glibc 2.39+. If FUSE is unavailable, prefix the launch
command with APPIMAGE_EXTRACT_AND_RUN=1.
For Flatpak:
flatpak install --user ./Toniator-0.2.0-x86_64.flatpak
flatpak run com.sbdd.ToniatorThe shared GNOME 50 runtime may be downloaded separately. The Flatpak has its
own settings, recent history, and personal Pattern library under
~/.var/app/com.sbdd.Toniator/; native/AppImage Patterns are not copied during
installation. This bundle is not a Flathub listing or an automatic-update feed.
Download SHA256SUMS and run sha256sum --ignore-missing -c SHA256SUMS next to
the downloaded packages. build-info.json records their source, runtime, icon,
and checksum provenance. Build instructions and output examples are in the
README.
Verification and known limitations
Tested on Fedora 44 with isolated Wayland startup, open/save/reopen, Close/Exit,
and theme checks. Both package formats rendered the project's intrinsic PNG/SVG
fixtures with matching results; packaged icons and checksums were verified.
These automated checks do not constitute exhaustive GNOME/Mutter or native
file-portal acceptance.
This is a development release. Obsolete project formats are rejected rather
than migrated automatically. Very fine Patterns and first-use personal
thumbnails can be slow; an intermittent RGB-to-CMYK crash report remains open;
a second launch does not forward a file to an already-running window.
See known issues.
Document-level Presets remain planned; the current personal library stores Patterns.
Toniator v0.1.0-alpha.1
Early Linux desktop preview of Toniator.
This release provides an x86-64 AppImage for testing. The application is still under active development and file formats and behavior may change.
