Aster v1.0.1
Aster 1.0.1 is the first CI-verified Mac + Windows desktop release of the integrated research workspace. It follows the initial 1.0.0 Mac release and fixes a Slack CLI command-policy failure while retaining slack project remove as an alias for slack project rm.
The consolidated app includes Workbench, Experiments and Runs, result comparison, Writing, Library, Compute, and the research harness. Remote project setup and server-hosted Slack routing are included. A headless Aster host can opt in to an experimental Paseo relay connection with aster serve --relay; it is off by default.
Downloads
- macOS (Apple Silicon):
Aster-mac-arm64.dmgor ZIP. The app is ad hoc signed and not notarized. On first launch, macOS may require right-click → Open. Later updates are announced in the app but require manually replacing Aster.app. - Windows x64:
Aster-windows-setup-x64.exeinstaller orAster-windows-x64.zip. Both are unsigned; Windows may show a SmartScreen prompt. The packaged installer, ZIP, and research flow were tested in Windows CI, not yet on a normal user PC.
The previously installed 0.1.0 Mac app does not check for updates, so install 1.0.1 once. Aster remains desktop-only; the Paseo phone app is a separate client. The experimental relay has not been verified with a real phone in this release.

Aster 0.1.0 — Windows x64 preview
Aster 0.1.0 for Windows x64 is an unsigned preview. The macOS 0.1.0 release remains the stable download.

| File | Use |
|---|---|
Aster-windows-setup-x64.exe |
Per-user installer. |
Aster-windows-x64.zip |
Portable app; extract the ZIP and open Aster.exe. |
SHA256SUMS.txt |
Checksums for both Windows files. |
Windows may show a SmartScreen warning because this preview has no code-signing certificate. Verify the SHA-256 checksum before opening a downloaded file. Aster does not auto-update from this preview; install a newer release manually.
Windows CI run 40265390335 built both packages and passed typecheck, unit tests, research Playwright E2E, silent installer install/uninstall, CLI and research harness checks, and a hidden app launch. The source was built from development commit cb7c25efb6ba14653a37ab7722734cea6ff2c7ef; this public release source differs only in documentation, test fixture names, and the repository-only orca.yaml setup hook, which is excluded from the app package.
This is CI verification, not a completed research workflow on an independent user PC. Remote SSH/SLURM and Slack delivery have not been validated end to end for this Windows preview. Linux desktop packages are not published yet.

Aster 0.1.0
The first public release of Aster, the agentic development environment for AI researchers.
Run experiments with Claude Code or Codex, keep the evidence of every Run, and write the paper beside it — one project, one window. See the README for how it works.

Requirements: Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 12 or later, and at least one agent CLI signed in (Claude Code or Codex). Optional: Tectonic to compile PDFs, and SSH access to GPU hosts (SLURM for job submission).
First launch
This build is signed ad hoc and not notarized, so macOS blocks the first open. Right-click Aster in Applications → Open → Open, or run:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Aster.appWhat's in 0.1.0
- Workbench: Claude Code and Codex chats next to the project's terminals, editor, files, and Git; a Research | Code layout switch.
- Experiments: a notebook per Experiment (plan, Needs you, results, analyses, conclusion) with a docked Experiment agent that designs, analyzes, explains failures, and proposes the next Run for your approval.
- Runs and Compare: live metric curves, logs, config, code patch, and media per Run; compare 2–6 Runs with baseline deltas, mismatched conditions, config differences, and outputs by sample.
- Research harness:
run execrecords the launch commit, uncommitted patch, host, command, agent session, log, and metrics; a claims ledger ties paper numbers to Run metrics; a budgeted research loop; watches that wake an agent when a Run ends, fails, logs NaN, or stalls. - Writing: LaTeX source, compiled PDF, SyncTeX, a writing agent, and a Claims drawer that marks numbers verified, stale, mismatched, or missing evidence.
- Library: project papers with highlights, arXiv/DOI import, and a reading agent.
- Compute and Deadlines: SSH hosts, GPUs and SLURM queues with per-host and per-project GPU budgets; conference deadlines in your time zone.
- Slack: mention the project's Aster bot in an allowed channel and a coordinator agent picks up the request and answers in the thread.
Known limitations
- macOS on Apple Silicon only for now; Windows and Linux builds are in progress.
- No automatic updates; install new releases by hand.
- Desktop only. For agent chat on a phone, use the Paseo app with its own host.
- SLURM, GPU budgets, SSH result reading, and Slack delivery have been tested with fixtures and unit tests, not yet end to end on live clusters or workspaces.
