A metadata editor for photos, music, video and documents, a menu bar and toolbars you can arrange yourself, and a faster app all round.
Update in place, or grab the installer below (BertBrowser-win-Setup.exe for a fresh install, BertBrowser-win-Portable.zip if you don't want it registered on the system).
Metadata editor
- The side pane now has three settings: none, preview, or metadata. They share one column and one remembered width. The metadata pane follows the selection, and you can edit several files at once (fields that differ show "(multiple values)").
- Edit tags and details for JPEG, PNG, WebP and TIFF pictures (EXIF, XMP and IPTC kept in step), MP3, FLAC, Ogg, M4A, WMA and other audio and video tags, and Office documents and EPUBs. A file only offers the fields its format can actually store.
- Cover art can be added, saved out, or removed. Remove location strips GPS from a photo, and Remove all metadata strips everything.
- The file's own modified and created dates are two more rows you can change.
- Built so it can't damage a file. Every edit is written to a copy first. The copy is read back and checked to make sure everything that isn't metadata (the picture, the audio, the document) is byte-for-byte unchanged, and only then is it swapped in. If something goes wrong, you get an error message and the original stays as it was. Creation time, permissions and the downloaded-from-the-internet marker are kept.
- For types BertBrowser has no editor of its own for (PDF, MOV, HEIC, camera RAW and so on), it offers whatever fields Windows' own property handler supports. These edits are also made on a copy, and the pane labels them "Written by Windows".
- Metadata and date edits can be undone like any other action.
- Rename from tags: rename patterns can use a file's metadata, such as
{artist},{track:00}or{taken:yyyy-MM}.
Menus and toolbars
- There's now a menu bar in the title bar, with Alt access keys and Help ▸ About.
- The new Menus and toolbars page in Settings lets you arrange it: add, remove and reorder menus and commands, add toolbar rows, and show names beside the icons. Changes appear in the title bar as you make them.
- Save arrangements under a name and switch between them from View ▸ Menus and toolbars or the command palette.
- If you never customise it, later versions' additions arrive automatically. If you have customised it, your arrangement is never changed for you. New commands appear under "not placed anywhere", and the palette can still run every command either way.
Faster
- Starts faster: the app is now precompiled, and tabs restored from your last session aren't built until you first look at them. Six restored tabs open in about half the time.
- Selecting many files is instant. Select all, invert selection or select files over 10,000 rows used to take 8–10 seconds; now it takes a fifth of a second.
- Text and hex previews of large files open three to four times faster, and switching a preview between Auto, Raw and Hex no longer waits for the selection delay.
- Flat view fills its list in bigger batches and uses far less memory on large trees.
- Big drops and deletes are planned many times faster, with a fraction of the memory (a thousand-item drop went from 72 ms and 53 MB to 2 ms), and archives open faster too.
Settings
- Settings now opens over your folders, centred and at most 1024 pixels wide, with the folders dimmed behind it. Clicking outside the page closes it.
