Audit pass against current (2025-Q4 / 2026-Q1) MCP-client docs. Five
distinct schema bugs were quietly producing broken installs.

Fixed (high-impact)

  • Every installer now defaults to stdio with the canonical
    {"command": "uvx", "args": ["mcp-aemps@latest", "stdio"]}.
    Previously 7 of 9 installers (Claude Code, Codex CLI, VS Code,
    Cursor, Windsurf, Zed, Continue, JetBrains Junie) defaulted to
    HTTP pointing at http://localhost:8765/mcp — silently broken
    unless the user happened to be running mcp-aemps up separately
    (which most users weren't, because the install command never told
    them to). HTTP is now opt-in via transport="http" for shared
    / multi-user deployments. New regression test
    test_no_default_install_writes_localhost_anywhere pins this
    invariant.

  • VS Code: migrated off the deprecated settings.json::mcp.servers
    location
    to the dedicated <user-profile>/Code/User/mcp.json
    with the new top-level servers key. Post-2025-Q4 VS Code surfaces
    an explicit deprecation banner asking users to migrate; we were
    triggering it on every reinstall. The new code also opportunistically
    cleans up the legacy mcp.servers.<name> entry from
    settings.json so users reinstalling after this release stop
    seeing the banner.

  • Continue.dev: HTTP entries now use the correct type: streamable-http
    instead of the invalid type: http — the http value was
    silently dropped from Continue's runtime (not in its schema) so
    Continue installs were no-ops for HTTP mode. Defaults to stdio
    with explicit type: stdio + command + args.

  • Zed stdio entries now include the required env: {} field.
    Zed's schema rejects context_servers entries that omit env;
    the empty object is mandatory.

  • Codex CLI TOML: stdio now writes command = "..." + args = [...]
    in standard TOML form. Previously only HTTP was written.

Added

  • transport="stdio" (default) and transport="http" parameters
    on every install function. Opt-in to HTTP only when you actually
    run a separately-reachable mcp-aemps up server.
  • Shared STDIO_COMMAND + STDIO_ARGS constants — single source
    of truth for the launcher across all 9 installers.
  • Centralised _stdio_block() helper used by every JSON-based
    installer. Future bumps to the canonical launcher live in one place.

Tests

  • 158/158 (10 new). Each installer has at least:
    • default-stdio test asserting the canonical block;
    • explicit transport="http" test asserting the URL is written
      where expected;
    • idempotency + uninstall + preserves-other-entries.
  • Cross-installer test_no_default_install_writes_localhost_anywhere
    proves no installer leaks a localhost URL into a default install.
