Bootstrap seed 9: safe-free build UAF fix (ac8193d5)

@ropoctl ropoctl released this 27 Jul 00:25

Bootstrap seed 9: safe-free with build UAF fix (ac8193d)

Linux x86_64 bootstrap seed. Native ELF with compiler built from source
commit ac8193d5 (branch master), the safe-free chain tip plus the build
use-after-free fix.

What this fixes over seed-08 (d5bae558): seed-08 could not run
with build / build :stage1 at all — it aborted in the build-graph action
path (a Vec[str] owned field moved/bit-copied out of a &BuildGraphTarget
borrow, double-freed at safe-free teardown). This seed carries commits
9cbb488a (clone owned Vec[str] instead of aliasing/moving out of a borrow)
and ac8193d5 (MirLower: scope stmt-temp cleanup to the frame that created
it). With them, a full with build runs end-to-end and stage2 == stage3 is
byte-identical.

Verification (source commit ac8193d):

  • full with build: exit 0
  • with build :fixpoint: stage2 == stage3 byte-identical
  • drop-audit / move-audit: zero regressions vs the pre-fix baseline
  • analyze audit:all: 0 violations

Scope — bootstrap-only. This seed is intended for the self-host bootstrap
and CI (build :stage1/:stage2/:stage3 + fixpoint), which only need main.w
to compile. It is NOT yet a supported general-purpose linux-x86_64 user
compiler: a separate, pre-existing front-end teardown bug (tracked as issue E)
makes it panic invalid free while check-ing ordinary programs that use
closures / Box / generics. That is orthogonal to this fix and does not affect
bootstrap.

Bootstrap seed 8/8: restore safe free — chain tip (d5bae558)

Choose a tag to compare

@ropoctl ropoctl released this 26 Jul 12:35

Bootstrap seed — Linux x86_64 stage3 @ d5bae558 (chain rung 8 / 8 — chain tip)

This asset is the Linux x86_64 self-hosted with compiler (a stage3 build)
at commit d5bae5587f60b4a8afd6cb26cef288d11be127e7 — the tip of master.

  • Commit: d5bae558 — rt: restore safe free — NEVER_FREE_MODE 1 -> 0
  • Role: rung 8 of 8 — restores real free(). This is the endpoint the whole
    chain exists to reach: the D22 map-view flip landed and memory is freed for
    real, with no double-free.
  • Predecessor seed: rung 7 (9afc7d71) stage3.
  • What it changes: flips NEVER_FREE_MODE from 1 back to 0 in rt/rt_core.w.
    With rung 7's deep-copy fix in place, the compiler compiles all ~26k lines of
    itself with real free() and no double-free.
  • Verification: re-verified this cycle — seeded from rung 7, full
    stage1/2/3 build, byte-identical fixpoint (stage2 == stage3),
    sha256 = 2723fa24cd60aa96c5d9f6586f3da3393c95a8c7f8487894ba1d5c1079b40743
    (this asset). Determinism cross-check: the same tip stage3 is produced whether
    seeded from rung 7 or directly from rung 6 — the safe-free tip is a stable
    fixed point. This is the seed the Linux CI bootstrap pulls in.

Asset: with-linux-x86_64 (+ .sha256). Use as a bootstrap seed:
WITH=./with-linux-x86_64 with build :stage1 (needs the pinned LLVM SDK in .deps/).

Bootstrap seed 7/8: deep-copy bitpacked_types (9afc7d71)

Choose a tag to compare

@ropoctl ropoctl released this 26 Jul 12:34

Bootstrap seed — Linux x86_64 stage3 @ 9afc7d71 (chain rung 7 / 8)

This asset is the Linux x86_64 self-hosted with compiler (a stage3 build)
at commit 9afc7d717bcaedaf5f20ad95276816fef7099740.

  • Commit: 9afc7d71 — Mir: deep-copy bitpacked_types in
    snapshot_sema_types (safe-free correctness)
  • Role: rung 7 of 8 — the safe-free correctness fix.
  • Predecessor seed: rung 6 (7d11c42e) stage3.
  • What it changes: MirModule.snapshot_sema_types(&Sema) deep-copies
    bitpacked_types instead of shallow-copying the HashMap handle out of a
    borrowed &Sema. The shallow copy aliased one runtime buffer between
    last_sema and last_mir_module, which both freed at teardown → the
    double-free that NEVER_FREE_MODE=1 was masking. This is the fix that makes
    restoring real free() (rung 8) safe.
  • Verification: re-verified this cycle — seeded from rung 6, full
    stage1/2/3 build, byte-identical fixpoint (stage2 == stage3). Still
    NEVER_FREE_MODE=1 at this rung (the flag flips at rung 8).

Asset: with-linux-x86_64 (+ .sha256). Use as a bootstrap seed:
WITH=./with-linux-x86_64 with build :stage1 (needs the pinned LLVM SDK in .deps/).
