Unofficial Linux port of Zalo messenger for Fedora/KDE Plasma

📋 System Requirements

  • OS: Linux (Fedora 40+ tested)
  • Desktop: KDE Plasma (recommended), GNOME, or other DE
  • Display: X11 or Wayland
  • RAM: 2 GB minimum, 4 GB recommended
  • Disk: 500 MB

⚠️ Known Limitations

Message sync from mobile to desktop is not functional in this release.

Workarounds:

  • Use Zalo web or phone. There is no workaround. The problem is due to the port. I cannot fix it, it is a server side problem.

INSTALLATION

Prerequisites

# Install Node.js and npm
sudo dnf install nodejs npm

# Install Electron dependencies
sudo dnf install libXScrnSaver gtk3 nss alsa-lib

Installation

# From source-code directory
cd source-code

# Install 
sudo ./install.sh

# Select variants in the install.sh. There is Zalo (light mode) and ZaDark (dark mode).

First stable release with full Wayland support! 🎉

This release fixes critical Wayland window control issues, making Zalo fully functional on modern Linux desktop environments.

🚀 Quick Start

Installation

# Extract
tar -xzf zalo-linux-v24.9.1-wayland-fix.tar.gz
cd zalo-linux-v24.9.1-wayland-fix

# Install
chmod +x install.sh
./install.sh

Launch

# From application menu
Search for "Zalo" and click

# Or from command line
~/.local/share/Zalo/start.sh

Uninstall

~/.local/share/Zalo/uninstall.sh

📝 What Was Fixed

Original Issue:

  • Application used frameless window design from macOS
  • Window controls were missing/non-functional on Wayland
  • Titlebar was not draggable
  • Application was unusable on Wayland

Solution:

  • Enabled native window frame on Linux
  • Changed frame: false to frame: process.platform === 'linux'
  • Maintains frameless design on macOS/Windows
  • Provides native window controls on Linux

🧪 Testing

This release has been thoroughly tested on:

  • OS: Fedora Linux
  • Desktop: KDE Plasma 42
  • Display Server: Wayland
  • Electron: v22.3.27

All window controls tested and verified working ✅

⚠️ Known Issues

Message Sync Not Working

  • Status: Known issue (will be fixed in future release)
  • Impact: Messages may not sync across devices in real-time
  • Workaround: Restart application to force sync
  • Planned Fix: Next release
