* Haiku doesn't use LD_LIBRARY_PATH and uses LIBRARY_PATH. * Without this, code doing prefer-dynamic will not be able to find things like rustlib's libstd-*.so

It comes from our BeOS kernel roots. Been around for ages. Below are old BeOS docs, old GCC patches circa 2000 mentioning it for Haiku and BeOS, and modern docs mentioning it. |
