Voicebar 1.7.1
Everything since 1.5.11.
Floating bar
- A new Bar style in Settings ▸ Bar and Gboard: Docked (as always) or Floating, a small pill with a soft shadow: ⠿ · ☰ · Cursor · ABC · Voice · one key you choose (Backspace to start).
- It starts parked at the bottom with the app above it. Drag the grip (⠿) to put it anywhere over the app; drop it near the bottom to park it again.
- From ☰, Collapse to the record pill leaves just ⠿ · ☰ · Voice, floating over the app, which gets the whole screen. Drag it anywhere; it comes back where you left it. Tap Voice and it grows into the recording pill right there.
The menu (☰)
- ☰ is always at the far left now, in both styles, and opens a short list: Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste and Select all across the top; Paste with a peek at what's on the clipboard (copied in any app); Recent dictations; Collapse or Open the whole bar; Dock the bar or Floating bar; Switch keyboard; Settings. The keyboard's ⋮ opens the same list.
- The clipboard history is gone (it only saw copies made while Voicebar was up). The month's cost is in Settings ▸ Voice typing ▸ Estimated cost.
Your keys
- One bar layout: the seven buttons. Three wide buttons and holding ⌫ for ↵ · space · ⌫ are gone.
- The keys around Cursor, ABC and Voice are yours: three docked, one floating. New choices: Enter and Docked ↔ floating. Hold a key (or swipe up from it) to pick; Settings has a dropdown for each.
- All your keys use the same secondary color, whatever they're set to.
Fix by voice
- Hold Voice to go straight into fixing: a tick, then say what's wrong.
- The fix works on everything in the box as it is now, hand edits and all.
Long dictations
- The screen stays on while Voicebar is listening.
Voicebar 1.5.11
A new welcome video
- A fresh 1:43 product video, narrated, filmed from the real bar. It plays on first run and under How to use it ▸ Watch again (full quality attached below).
Your own keys
- The ⌫ right of the pill is now a second own key, with the same choices as the left one plus Backspace (the default).
- Backspace on an own key repeats with a double-tap-and-hold; a plain hold opens the picker.
- Fix last dictation is now an own-key choice instead of a hold on Voice: press it, then say what's wrong.
- Dragging up to a choice and letting go only sets the key. Press it once to use it.
Speech
- The first dictation after the phone has been idle shows its words in the pill and keeps them.
- With a physical keyboard connected, auto-listen still listens when the phone is in your hand, and stays quiet when it's lying still.
Voicebar 1.5.5
Fix a dictation
- Hold Voice (or swipe up from it) and let go on Fix last dictation, then say what's wrong ("broad should be lowercase", "drop the okay at the end"). Those words are instructions, never typed: the dictation in the box is fixed with them. Say nothing and it just takes a closer look.
Sending
- Check the message before sending (on by default): one last read of the whole message for what pauses leave behind, like a capital mid-sentence or a stray trailing "okay". It never rewords anything.
- Find unlabeled Send buttons (optional): when an app's Send has no label, the cleanup's model picks it out of a picture of the buttons beside the message box. A button that works is remembered for that app and forgotten if it stops working.
- Pressing the app's own Send mid-dictation now stops listening instead of typing the words back in.
Better cleanup
- Pausing to think no longer leaves capitals or periods mid-sentence.
- Names on screen fix their mishearings ("Fastmail", not "fast snail"), at pauses too.
Keyboard
- ?123 and ⋮ (the bar's menu) in the bottom row; pull the handle down to close it, with a light tick when you grab it.
- A space goes in after a swiped word before the next typed one.
- The polishing pill and bar buttons no longer show over the keyboard.
- Opening the keyboard within 4 s of listening drops what was heard.
Speech
- A slow first connection no longer loses the first dictation: the connection is warmed up when the keyboard opens, and the pill says Connecting… until the speech service is really connected.
- Start-up timing in Settings ▸ Logs.
Removed
- The auto-listen safeguard check (OpenAI) and its setup step.
Voicebar 1.5.4
Install Voicebar-1.5.4.apk (Android 8 or later, 64-bit). It updates any 1.x in place. Coming from 0.99.x? See the 1.0 release notes for moving your settings over. Tour: Voicebar-welcome.mp4 · site: https://ryder.works/Voicebar/
New in 1.5.4
- Voicebar's own keyboard. Tap ABC for a full Material You keyboard that pops up and takes over the bar's row, so its bottom row (a mic key back to the voice bar, ?123, comma, space, period, and the field's own ↵) sits where your thumbs already are. Hold ABC (or the mic key) for Gboard; Settings › Look can swap the two. Suggestions finish the word you're typing (your own words first), capitals come at the start of a sentence, double-tap shift for caps lock, hold a key for its accents or number, slide on space to move the cursor, two spaces type a period, and a lone "i" or a missing apostrophe ("dont") is fixed on a space (⌫ right after undoes it).
- Swipe to type. Slide across a word's letters without lifting; the word goes in with a space before it, and the strip offers the other words it might have been. It runs FUTO Swipe's open models on the phone with Voicebar's own decoder (Powered by FUTO Swipe), with nothing sent anywhere. Turn it off under Settings › Look.
- Say the formatting. "Title case … end title case", "quote … end quote", and "open paren … close paren" while dictating. Quotes and parentheses only happen as a pair, so "send me a quote" stays words; "literal quote" types the word.
- Cursor and ABC while you talk. They slide left in a quieter tone while you dictate (⋮ and the own key move off the bar). Tap one to pause: what you've said is finished so you can work on it, and listening starts again at the cursor when you close the pad or keyboard.
- Settings › Open-source notices lists what Voicebar is built with and each license; the Logs page now includes the last crash report.
New in 1.3.8
- Fixing text in the middle of a sentence reads right. A dictation dropped mid-sentence starts lowercase (names and "I" keep their capitals), and starts with a capital after a sentence ends. It loses its closing period when the sentence carries on, and a word said again across the seam appears once. This works even when cleanup fails or is off.
- Leftover words get cleaned up. Cleanup sees the text you selected to replace and can take out up to three leftover words of the old wording right next to your dictation. They're only removed if they're exactly where expected.
- Millennial mode no longer strips a period from a fix in the middle of text.
New in 1.3.7
- Millennial mode is now checks (Settings › Text and language): in search boxes (new: search fields and address bars, where a final period becomes part of the search), in messaging apps, everywhere (covers the other two), or nowhere. Your old setting carries over.
New in 1.3.6
- Hold or swipe up on the bar's own key for a column of every choice: slide onto one and let go, or let go and tap one. It runs now and stays the key. Space still slides sideways to move the cursor.
New in 1.3.5
- Choose the seven-button bar's own key (Settings › Look): space, paste, undo, select all, or your last dictation typed again. ↵ and ⌫ always end the bar.
- Dictations come first in the ⋮ menu, shown as you said them. Tap one to send it to cleanup again (a sweep runs across the card while it works); the new version goes on the clipboard. Hold one for As said or Delete.
- A more useful log. It records the cleanup at pauses, the start of any cleanup reply that wasn't used and why, and what the voice filters silenced. Android's own log shows warnings and errors unless you switch it to Everything.
New in 1.3.4
- Auto-listen waits longer for you to start. It now gives you 8 seconds (was 4) to start talking before it stops.
New in 1.3.3
- Simpler auto-listen. It now has one rule: if nobody talks at the phone in the first few seconds, it stops. In messaging and email apps, words go straight into the box like everywhere else. The old messaging-app behavior (words wait in the bar until you finish, a tap to add if it ends on its own, a one-minute stop) is still there as Extra care in messaging apps under Voice typing, off by default.
New in 1.3.2
- GPT-6 Luna cleanup works: it was timing out; it now runs without extended reasoning, which suits a quick edit. Messages name the service that actually ran (ChatGPT or Claude).
- A Logs page (home › Logs): the last five minutes of Voicebar's events plus Android's log for the app, to copy whole into a bug report.
- The auto-listen check logs what OpenAI answers when a check fails.
New in 1.3.1
- Fixed: with "Listen as soon as a text box opens", tapping into a box could type your previous dictation into it. Each dictation now starts empty.
- The ⋮ menu in dark mode uses the same colors as the settings screens, so its cards stand out from the panel. The Clipboard / Dictations tabs line up with the cards, and corners follow Material 3's shape scale.
- Copy recent log (Settings › How to use it): the last five minutes of what Voicebar did, to paste into a bug report. Kept only in memory.
New in 1.3
- Cleanup with Claude Haiku or GPT-6 Luna. The model dropdown offers both. With one key, that key's model is used; with both, the one you pick (Haiku by default).
- Your last 10 dictations are in the ⋮ menu, next to the clipboard (switch between Clipboard and Dictations). Tap one to paste it as it was typed, or hold it and choose As said to paste the words before cleanup, handy when cleanup gets something wrong.
New in 1.2
- A Cleanup page on the home screen gathers everything about cleanup: on or off, your Claude key, the model, the optional OpenAI key and the auto-listen check it unlocks, recent checks, and the last cleanup problem.
- The cleanup model is a dropdown (Claude Haiku, Sonnet or Opus 5.5, with prices) instead of a box for a model name.
- Setup now offers the OpenAI key as an optional step, with what it's for and an example.
New in 1.1
- Clipboard history in the ⋮ menu. Your last 15 copies show as three cards that scroll sideways: tap one to paste it, hold it to pin or delete it. Pinned clips stay, anything an app marks as sensitive (like a password manager's copies) is skipped, and nothing Voicebar copies for you pushes out what you had.
- A smarter auto-listen check (optional, needs an OpenAI key). Add an OpenAI key under Voice and turn on "Check auto-listen with OpenAI". In messaging and email apps, every 10 seconds of a dictation that started by itself, OpenAI's Decisions API judges whether it's still a message for the conversation. If it's drifted into talking to the room, it stops and goes to the clipboard instead. Recent checks are listed under How to use it. Cleanup still uses Claude.
- A failed Send never loses your message. If swipe-to-send can't find the app's Send button, your message stays in the box (it's put back if it went missing) and is copied too. If the Gboard button is switched off, the bar says so with a tap to turn it back on.
