Detailed Changelog

Bugfixes

• Fix an issue where the app could crash when the user pasted from an empty clipboard. This appears to be a Qt or PyQt bug, and is not present on the later releases, but a fix has been added that ensures the bug is not triggered. Issue Crashes on blank paste #2598. Documentation

• Fixed a broken link in the updated 2.8 docs. PR Fix broken link in docs #2595.

Internationalisation

• Updated Czech, German, US English, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian and Chinese translation files from the Crowdin project page. PR Release 2.8 #2608.

Packaging

• Added qt6-svg-plugins as a direct dependency of novelWriter on Debian. This package was not always installed on some distros. Issue Missing icons on raspberry Pi OS #2604. PR Add Qt6 SVG plugins as a direct dependency for Debian #2607.

How do I change to night mode when writing? I switched to version 2.8 and it seems to default to light mode.

The light/dark theme button on the sidebar, next to settings. The help text in Preferences for the theme settings has this info.

(It defaults to whatever your operating system is set to.)

I really love the new themes!

I am usually always happy with the updates, but this time I wanted to really highlight that the new themes are a joy to use. They are all very pleasing on the eyes, and I like that they are so very different so that I can switch them around depending on what project I am working on.

@NoxEther Thank you so much for your kind words. The novelWriter themes were my "passion project" last summer and I spent many, many hours trying to get each theme right, be it adapting existing syntax highlighting themes or my own ideas. Providing a wide variety of vibes was a goal of mine, and I am very happy that you find them useful ☺️ ☺️

@HeyMyian You're welcome! I think it shows that you put a lot of care into this.

I was very happy to see color schemes I knew from elsewhere (such as Tango, Catpuccin or Everforest) and very impressed by how many themes were available in both dark and light versions.

I like that there are several high-contrast and low-contrast options, and that they're not just "a grey background with a different accent color". I'm mostly a dark theme person, but I could totally see myself using some of the light themes once in a while.

Anyway, I know positive feedback can be a bit rare sometimes in the FOSS space, so I thought I would be explicit about it!
