Light Touch 1.0 — September 26 update (.1)

Light Touch is a very good Mac app for an emulated iPod touch 2G running iOS 3.1.3. It requires an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 14.4 or later.

This replaces the earlier September 26 build, which could crash the iPod while installing some apps.

What's new

• Screen recording got better
  • Record with Cmd+R; the button shows elapsed time, then save progress. Cmd+Period lets you discard or save.
  • Screenshot with Cmd+S (Shift+Cmd+S to Save As). Cmd+C copies the screen when the iPod has focus.
  • Screenshots and recordings now capture the whole iPod model by default (rotation, tilt, shadow and all).
  • Switch back to just the screen pixels with Capture > Capture Screen Only.
• Home Screen and rotate buttons are in the toolbar too. Cmd+Square Bracket to rotate.
• Movie import: drop MP4, M4V or QuickTime files on the iPod and they show up in Videos.
• Removing apps can now queue behind installs.

What's fixed

• Window > Show iPod Files is its own window now, and closing it doesn't cancel a transfer.
• Settings are gone. Everything moved into the menus: Device > Network has the proxy and Wayback Machine options, and Device > Connect to the Internet is remembered between launches.
• Startup waits until SpringBoard is actually ready before accepting input, and shows progress while it waits. If it's taking more than 90 seconds you get a Device Logs button.
• Emulator fixes:
  • Installing apps with lots of files (like Boss) no longer crashes and reboots the iPod.
  • Bluetooth no longer stalls on boot, which was what broke the app launch zoom animation.
  • OpenGL games that use landscape or smaller-than-fullscreen views render correctly.
  • More LCD plane layouts display correctly.

Still known issues

• Booting is still slow.
• It still asks for local network permission: #3
• Game graphics, audio and video compatibility is still incomplete.
• Tested on macOS 27 only.
• The American Dream remains unattainable for younger generations because wages have not kept pace with the cost of housing.

  • Use the accelerometer by dragging the iPod or trackpad gestures when your pointer is over the iPod's bezel
  • Rotate with Cmd+Left or Cmd+Right
• Browse and install compatible apps from Legacy Store
  • You can also install apps by dragging the .ipa file onto the window.
• Screenshot and screen record using incredible WireView™ technology — amazing!
  • Live Text: copy any text that appears on-screen
  • Enable touch dots to appear in the recording: Capture > Show Finger Dots
• Networking works by faking a Wi-Fi connected from your Mac
  • You can optionally route all websites through the Wayback Machine. Enable this by picking a date in Device > Proxy…
  • If you're having trouble loading a modern website, you can enable an HTTP proxy in Device > Proxy…
  • (this is why it asks for local network permissions, btw. shitty experience, i know: #3)
• When your pointer is over the iPod's display, you can use trackpad gestures for swiping/dragging gestures.
• Keyboard input sorta works, but it's laggy
  • iOS 3.1.3 does not support external keyboards, so I'm doing this by faking taps to the on-screen keyboard.
  • This is also why punctuation and numbers and symbols are broken.
• 🧪 Experimental support for syncing music, movies, photos
• 🧪 Experimental support for pasteboard syncing between the iPod and your Mac. Edit > Paste Text to Guest
• 🧪 Experimental support for browsing the device files: View > Files
  • Use at your own risk, I honestly didn't even know this was added until I saw it just now in the View menu. Much less tested it.
  • Exit the file view by unchecking View > Files

  • Wi-Fi isn't really supported beyond the hacks to make the Mac's connection appear as a hotspot

• USB (used internally, not really accessible generally)

Incomplete list of known issues

• It takes a while to boot. Even after the lock screen comes up, it won’t be interactive for another couple of seconds.
  • If it takes longer than 90 seconds on first boot, it’s an issue and you should file it.
• It’ll ask for network permissions unprompted. You should allow it, but I recognize this is a subpar experience. It asks for network permissions because I’ve embedded an HTTP proxy so it can access the network through your computer but with the modern encryption stripped that it doesn’t understand. you can enable in the Device menu.

Light Touch 0.1

Superseded: See the Light Touch September 11 maintenance release for the current release. The original notes and assets below are retained as historical release records; their installation guidance and known issues describe that older build.

LightTouchMac — a native Mac app that boots and manages an emulated iPod touch 2G running iOS 3.1.3.

Install

Download LightTouchMac.zip, unzip, drag to Applications, open. Fully self-contained and notarized: the emulator, usbmuxd, libimobiledevice, the guest helpers, and the device image are all inside the bundle — no Homebrew, no source checkouts, nothing else to install.

The first launch takes a little longer while it unpacks the device image into Application Support; every launch after that boots straight in (no relaunch needed).

In this build

• Everything through the audit-fixes merge: durable snapshot persistence, clean guest shutdown on quit (the kernel powers off and unmounts), serialized installs, sidebar/device sync fixes.
• Bluetooth bring-up completes on every boot (launch-announcement + chardev-reset fixes in the emulator).
• The Lock button visibly locks: the app no longer pins the panel at full exposure, so the guest's screen-off actually shows.
• The guest's timezone follows the Mac's — set through lockdown at boot and again if the host's zone changes mid-run; the status bar clock updates live.
• Settings window folded into the Device menu (Automatically Resume on Launch; Verbose Boot under Advanced). Verbose Boot only shows on a cold boot — with resume on, nothing boots.
• The first app launch shows a one-time hint that dragging next to the iPod tilts it.
• Inspector polish: stale-list caption instead of the gray strip; Store mode drops the +/- footer.
• The local-network permission prompt explains itself.

Per-user state (NAND overlay, snapshots, logs) lives in ~/Library/Application Support/LightTouchMac; the base image inside the app is never written.
