Mac ID is facial recognition software for Mac: it unlocks your Mac with your face. When the lock screen appears, a small panel opens under the notch, Mac ID recognises you with the built-in camera, and types your password for you.

Face unlock

  • Recognises you on the lock screen and unlocks the Mac. Typical recognition takes under a second.
  • Choose what starts a scan: On wake, On lock, and/or On space (press the space bar on the lock screen).
  • Retry on notch hover: move the pointer to the notch to scan again.
  • Auto retry once after failure, plus adjustable match confidence, detection distance and face detection duration.
  • If it doesn't recognise you, nothing happens. The lock screen waits and you type your password as usual.
  • Works on the built-in display or an external display, with optional haptic feedback.

Your face

  • Guided enrolment in the notch; recapture or start over any time from Settings → Your Face.
  • More than one identity can be enrolled.
  • Recognition runs entirely on the Mac, using an on-device face model on the Apple Neural Engine. Your face never leaves your Mac.

Liveness

  • Optional liveness detection rejects a printed photo and a photo shown on a phone screen.
  • It does not reliably reject a video of you, and a camera can't match Face ID or Touch ID. Mac ID is a convenience, not a security upgrade.

Your password

  • Stored AES-256-encrypted on your Mac. The key that decrypts it is released only by Touch ID or your Mac password, and it is never sent anywhere.
  • The session locks every time Mac ID launches. You unlock it once with Touch ID, and can set it to lock itself again automatically (Auto lock session).
  • Change or remove the stored password from Settings → Password.

Animation and preview

  • Unlock animation: Original, Minimal, or none at all (turn off Show animation and it just unlocks).
  • Optional camera preview while scanning.

Permissions

  • Mac ID checks Camera and Accessibility on its own. If Accessibility gets switched off (for example after an update), the menu bar and Settings say so and one click takes you to the right switch.
  • Launch at login.

Licence and trial

  • 1-day free trial with every feature, no payment details and no account. One trial per Mac.
  • When the trial ends, Mac ID stops unlocking your Mac until you add a licence key. It will not keep working unlicensed.
  • $4.99 once, for one Mac. The licence never expires and has no subscription. It activates once, then works offline.
  • Buy from the licence screen or at macid.net. Your key appears on the page as soon as you've paid.

Terms of Use

  • Before first use, you read and agree to the Terms of Use. If the terms change, you're asked again.
  • Review them any time in Settings → About.

Updates and support

  • Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens without any security warnings.
  • Checks for updates every day and installs them in the app. You can also use Check for Updates in Settings → About.
  • Support: support@macid.net, or the Email button in Settings → About, which includes your version details.

Already using a version from before 1.9? Download this one from macid.net once and drag it into Applications. Your licence and settings come across automatically. macOS asks you to set up your face and password, and approve Camera and Accessibility, one more time.
