- Summary - This lab explored the functionalities of Wireshark, and how we can use that tool to track packets and find out information about the networking path.
- Commands/Instructions - This lab covered simple commands in command prompt and Wireshark. We used ping command again to create a connection to a different device, as well as ipconfig /all to gather information about our devices. We also learned basic commands in Wireshark, including the filtering system to track down the ping packets.
- Problems - I had install Wireshark onto the VM, which was inconvenient but not an issue.
- Things to Consider
- A MAC Address is the unique identifier of a device and are used to route traffic. The first 6 digits identify the vendor and the last 6 digits are the numbers unique to the device, or "fingerprint"
- A MAC address is obtained by using the ipconfig /all in command prompt, or within the packets the device sends via Wireshark
- Wireshark is a tool that tracks all of the network traffic coming to and from the device. Within the application you can begin collecting packets, and inspect them individually.
- Protocols can be identified in Wireshark under the "Protocol" column once you start collecting packets.
