Orchard Commander 2.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@sandboxly sandboxly released this 15 Oct 18:59

Orchard Commander 2.1.1 is a maintenance release. The character-grid renderer, the color schemes and the multi-rename metadata readers now come from Orchard Commons, a library shared with Orchard Music Player and Orchard Download Manager. Nothing changes in how the app looks or works, and your settings and color schemes stay where they are.

Orchard Commander 2.1.0

@sandboxly sandboxly released this 14 Oct 14:19

Orchard Commander 2.1.0 adds an info window that shows what takes up a folder's space, and lets you go up from a drive to all your drives on Windows.

New

  • Show info (⌥Enter / Alt+Enter) opens a window about the item under the cursor: path, type, size, when it was modified, created and last opened, permissions and owner (attributes on Windows), and where a link points. On .. it shows the folder you are in.
  • See what fills a folder. For a folder, the info window measures everything inside it and draws a ring chart of its biggest items in your color scheme's colors, with each item's size and share. The numbers fill in while it measures, together with the number of files and folders and the free space on the disk.
  • All drives one level up (Windows). Backspace or .. on a drive's top folder, such as C:\, now shows a Drives list with C:, D: and your other drives, so you no longer need Alt+F1 / Alt+F2 to switch drives. Drives can't be moved, deleted or renamed from this list.

Orchard Commander 2.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@sandboxly sandboxly released this 14 Oct 09:03

Orchard Commander 2.0.1 fixes audio playback when the output device changes, makes moving to the trash feel instant, and adds rename in place and dropping files from the system file manager.

New

  • Rename in place (F2 or Shift+F6) renames the entry under the cursor. Only the name before the extension is selected, so typing keeps .pdf or .txt. A change of letter case only (a.txt → A.txt) works. ⌘Z / Ctrl+Z undoes the rename.
  • Drop files onto a panel from Finder or Explorer. Dropping on a folder row puts them into that folder; anywhere else in a panel, into the panel's folder. Files move within the same disk and are copied to another disk. Hold ⌥ to copy or ⌘ to move on macOS, Ctrl to copy or Shift to move on Windows.

Fixed

  • Audio follows the output device. Switching to Bluetooth headphones or another output while something plays no longer leaves playback silent, and you no longer need to restart the app before it picks up a new device.
  • Moving to the trash is instant. F8 hides the files right away and clears the selection, and you can press F8 again at once without an "another file operation is still running" error. If the system's trash takes longer than 5 seconds, the files come back into view with a note on the bottom line until it finishes.
  • Spaces in names. Typing a space in Make directory (F7), New file, Go to and the other one-line prompts no longer closes the prompt early. "Movies & More" now creates "Movies & More", not "Movies".

Changed

  • Messages, buttons and dialogs across the app were reworded to be shorter and clearer.

Orchard Commander 2.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@sandboxly sandboxly released this 13 Oct 18:15

Orchard Commander 2.0.0 is a new implementation of the app in Rust. It has the same features, keys, menus and settings as 1.1.1. It starts faster, handles large folders without freezing, uses less memory and runs on older macOS versions.

Faster and lighter

Measured against 1.1.1:

1.1.1 2.0.0
Start until the window shows 0.52 s 0.23 s
Listing a folder with 100,000 files 1.8 s, the window doesn't respond meanwhile 0.17 s, the window keeps responding
Multi-rename preview of 5,000 files 10.5 s 14 ms
Memory with a 100,000-file folder open 204 MB 81 MB

System requirements

  • macOS 12 Monterey or later on Apple silicon. 1.x needed macOS 14.
  • Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit, as before.
  • Linux x86-64 with glibc 2.35 or later, for example Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 or Fedora 36 and later.
  • RAR archives open without unrar or 7-Zip installed. RAR support is now part of the app.

Your settings carry over

Settings, bookmarks, saved connections, known SFTP hosts, your color schemes and the passwords saved in the system keychain are read from the same places and in the same format as in 1.x. Nothing needs to be imported. On Windows the installer upgrades an existing 1.x installation in place. On macOS, replace the app or run brew upgrade --cask orchard-commander. On Linux, install the new .deb or .rpm over the old one.

What works differently from 1.x

  • Go to (⌘G / Ctrl+G) with a relative path such as src/app or ../other now looks for it in the active panel's folder.
  • Clicking a column header sorts the entries already shown and doesn't read the folder again. For a server folder that means no wait. To see changes made on a server since the folder was opened, press ⌘R / Ctrl+R.
  • The color picker in the color scheme editor is now a dialog of the app itself on every system. It has basic colors, a hue and saturation field, a brightness bar and a field for the hex value.
  • Line spacing (Options → Settings) now changes the row height everywhere in the window, not only in the file lists.

Licenses

The packages include the license texts of the third-party components: FFmpeg (LGPL, with where to get its source), PDFium, UnRAR and the Rust libraries the app is built from. They are in the licenses folder of the app, and in /usr/share/doc/orchard-commander/ on Linux. Options → About Orchard Commander opens this folder.

Orchard Commander 1.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@sandboxly sandboxly released this 12 Oct 15:23

Orchard Commander 1.1.1 gives the editor menus and two more shortcuts.

Editor

  • On macOS, the editor window has its own File and Edit menus: save, close, undo, redo, cut, copy, paste, select all, find, find next and previous, replace, and go to line, each with its shortcut.
  • The editor's own menu also makes sure keys like ⌘Z and ⌘F go to the editor, not to the main window's menu, which uses them to undo a multi-rename and to open Find Files.
  • Undo and redo are greyed out in the menu when there is nothing to undo or redo. Opening a file doesn't count as an edit.
  • Go to line also works on ⌥⌘L (Ctrl+Alt+L on Windows and Linux), in addition to ⌘L (Ctrl+L).

Orchard Commander 1.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@sandboxly sandboxly released this 12 Oct 15:03

Orchard Commander 1.1 adds a text editor.

Editor

  • F4 opens the file under the cursor in an editor window. Shift+F4 creates a new text file in the current folder and opens it.
  • Syntax highlighting for most programming and markup languages, in the app's color scheme. Line numbers, find and replace, go to line.
  • Files keep their encoding (UTF-8, UTF-16, UTF-32, Windows-1252, Latin-1, with or without a byte order mark) and their line endings.
  • Works on files on servers: a file in an SFTP, SMB, WebDAV or S3 panel is read from and saved to the server.
  • Local files are written to a temporary file first and then replace the original, keeping its permissions.
  • Files inside archives open read-only. If a file changes on disk while it's open, the editor reloads it or asks first if you have unsaved changes.

The editor chapter of the manual has the details.

Orchard Commander 1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@sandboxly sandboxly released this 12 Oct 13:54

The first release of Orchard Commander, a two-panel file manager for macOS, Windows and Linux in the classic keyboard-driven style.

What it does

  • Two folders side by side. F5 copies from one panel to the other, F6 moves, F7 creates a folder, F8 moves files to the trash. Bookmarks, a command palette and the classic panel commands (swap panels, same folder on both sides) are included.
  • Either side can show a preview of the file under the cursor in the other panel: source code with syntax highlighting, Markdown, images, PDFs, audio with a spectrum and waveform, video, and a hex view.
  • zip, tar, 7z and rar files open like folders. SFTP, SMB, WebDAV and S3 connections open in a panel. Passwords are stored in the system keychain.
  • Find files (Alt+F7 or ⌘F) searches by name, content, size and date. The matches appear as a folder you can preview, mark and move.
  • Multi-rename (⌘M) uses placeholders like [N] for the name and [C] for a counter and can read music tags, photo dates and video resolution. The whole batch can be undone.
  • A terminal below the panels (⌘J) runs your own shell. Each side has its own session, and the shell and the panel follow each other's folder.
  • Eight color schemes, custom schemes, any monospaced font, and light and dark mode.

On Windows and Linux, use Ctrl where this list says ⌘.
