Frame Control 0.3.1: install APKs without the Android SDK

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 28 Sep 02:32

Installing APKs no longer needs the Android SDK. 0.3.0 used aapt2 to read APK files and asked you to install Android Studio's command-line tools to get it. 0.3.1 reads APKs itself, so that step is gone. Install this version and try the APK again.

Download
Windows 10/11 (x64) Frame-Control-Setup-x64.exe, or the portable Frame-Control-win-x64.zip
macOS (Apple Silicon) Frame-Control-mac-arm64.dmg
Linux x64 Frame-Control-linux-x86_64.AppImage, or Frame-Control-linux-amd64.deb
Linux arm64 Frame-Control-linux-arm64.AppImage, or Frame-Control-linux-arm64.deb

Unsigned builds:

  • macOS: run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Frame Control.app" once.
  • Windows: SmartScreen may warn. Choose More info → Run anyway.

New in 0.3.1

  • APKs are read by a built-in parser. No aapt2 or Android SDK needed.
  • Python and adb are bundled on macOS and Windows, so the app needs nothing else installed.
  • Sideload Linux and Windows game builds as Steam Devkit Games.
  • frame-control://install links, so websites can offer one-click installs.
  • Pairing tries the SteamOS devkit service before asking for a password.
  • HTTPS works from the bundled Python on fresh Windows installs.

Frame Control 0.3.0: now on Windows and Linux

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Sep 04:37

Frame Control now runs on Windows and Linux as well as macOS. Manage your Valve Steam Frame from any of them over SSH. This is an unofficial hobby project, not affiliated with Valve.

Download
Windows 10/11 (x64) Frame-Control-Setup-x64.exe, or the portable Frame-Control-win-x64.zip. Python is bundled.
macOS (Apple Silicon) Frame-Control-mac-arm64.dmg
Linux x64 Frame-Control-linux-x86_64.AppImage, or Frame-Control-linux-amd64.deb
Linux arm64 Frame-Control-linux-arm64.AppImage, or Frame-Control-linux-arm64.deb

First run: turn on Developer Mode on the Frame and set a user password. Open the app, choose Set Up Connection, and type that password once. Full instructions

Unsigned builds:

  • macOS: run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Frame Control.app" once.
  • Windows: SmartScreen may warn. Choose More info → Run anyway.

New in 0.3.0

  • Windows and Linux support, including first-run setup that opens in your own terminal.
  • A new README and docs.
  • Release builds for all three platforms come from GitHub Actions.

Tested against a real Steam Frame (SteamOS build 20260922) on Windows 11, Ubuntu and macOS:

  • status and battery
  • headset and desktop captures, and live video
  • your Steam library
  • Android apps
  • screenshots
  • file upload

Not yet exercised on any platform: Flatpak and APK installs from the app, the power buttons, and sending text while the headset's desktop is open. On Windows each action opens its own SSH connection, so the app is a little slower there (about 0.5–1 s per refresh).

Please report problems as issues. Include your OS, your SteamOS build, and the log from Frame → Show Server Log.

Frame Control 0.2.0 (first public test release)

@saphid saphid released this 25 Sep 21:46

First public test release of Frame Control, a Mac app for managing a Valve Steam Frame over SSH. Unofficial; not affiliated with Valve.

Needs: a Steam Frame with Developer Mode on, an Apple Silicon Mac, and python3 (xcode-select --install). adb is optional, for Android apps.

Install:

  1. Download the DMG below and drag Frame Control to Applications.
  2. The app isn't notarized, so clear the download quarantine once:
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Frame Control.app"
  3. Open it and accept the connection setup. It asks for your Developer Mode password once.

Setup details and a list of what's verified and what isn't are in the README.

What it does: live headset view (H.264 at about 30 fps) and screenshots; battery, storage and status; your Steam library, with installs onto the headset and Frame ratings; F-Droid apps as their own Lepton instances; file drop and clipboard; Flatpaks; volume.

New since 0.1.1:

  • Live H.264 video of the headset view.
  • Android compatibility reports are saved on your Mac. The shared database is maintainer-only for now.
  • A clean error when the headset is unreachable.
  • MIT license.

Please report problems as issues. Include your SteamOS build and the log from Frame → Show Server Log.

Security: Developer Mode exposes SSH, ADB and RDP on your LAN. Use trusted networks only, and see the README's security notes.
