Frame Control 0.4.1
Frame Control 0.4.1 fixes problems people reported from 0.4.0, mostly on Windows. Copies of 0.4.0 offer this update by themselves.
| Download | |
|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 (x64) | Frame-Control-Setup-x64.exe, or the portable Frame-Control-win-x64.zip |
| macOS (Apple Silicon) | Frame-Control-mac-arm64.dmg |
| Linux x64 | Frame-Control-linux-x86_64.AppImage, or Frame-Control-linux-amd64.deb |
| Linux arm64 | Frame-Control-linux-arm64.AppImage, or Frame-Control-linux-arm64.deb |
Unsigned builds:
- macOS: run
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Frame Control.app"once. - Windows: SmartScreen may warn. Choose More info → Run anyway.
Fixed
- Windows: a headset that connects fine in a terminal is now found by the app too. When the headset's address was a local IPv6 one, Windows' ssh couldn't use the form the app passed it.
- Windows: Frame Control no longer gets locked out with "Bad owner or permissions on ….ssh\config". It now keeps that file private when it changes it, and repairs it if ssh refuses it.
- Windows: Remote desktop signs in as
steamos. If the Frame doesn't answer, the app says why instead of claiming it opened. - Windows: connecting, copying files and setting up keys no longer hang with some OpenSSH versions.
- The server no longer crashes when it's told to stop. If it stops after running for a while, the app restarts it, and the error page has a Try Again button.
New
- Screenshots: a Copy button, a right-click menu (open, copy, show in folder, copy path), and new shots appear without refreshing.
- Report a problem can include a contact email, with separate opt-ins for update emails and follow-up questions (privacy).
Thanks to everyone who sent a problem report.
Frame Control 0.4.0: updates itself, several headsets, and your Mac in the headset
Frame Control now updates itself, and does much more with the headset. 0.4.0 checks for new versions and installs them with one click. It also streams your Mac's windows into the Frame, runs Quest VR apps, lets you type and point from your phone or computer, and manages more than one headset. This is the last version you have to download by hand.

New in 0.4.0
- Updates itself. It checks GitHub for a newer release, verifies the download and installs it (macOS app bundle, Windows installer, Linux AppImage).
- Several headsets, each with several addresses (home Wi-Fi,
.local, Tailscale). A new Devices tab, and a status pill that shows the network, the address and each step of connecting as it happens. - Mac in the headset: each Mac window or screen as its own panel in the Frame, with laser pointing and the Mac's keyboard. Quality adapts to your Wi-Fi.
- Type and point in the Frame from your phone or computer. Frame Control brings its own KDE Connect for the Frame, so there's nothing else to install.
- Run Quest and other VR Android apps. Frame Control detects them, fixes their launcher and adds an OpenXR 1.1 compatibility layer. Open Brush runs; Wolvic starts, then its own browser engine crashes. Apps that check for a Quest store licence won't run.
- When an Android app is too new for the Frame, it offers older versions that install.
- One search across F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid and more, with proper Steam library artwork.
- iPhone and iPad app: the same controls from your phone, served from the Frame. Not on the App Store yet; build it from the repo with Xcode (how).
- Family and comfort: session limits, break reminders, battery and heat alerts, and casting the headset view.
- A panel switcher, a VR performance overlay, and a media player with a theatre mode for 3D video and stills.
- Assistant tools (MCP) with a human approval for every change.
- Tabs, a single offline message, installs that carry on in the background, and drop files anywhere.
- Report a problem from inside the app. Anonymous usage statistics are on after a first-run notice and can be turned off; error details and compatibility results are opt-in (what is sent).
Fixed
- Mirroring your Mac fits the whole desktop in the panel, asks for the right password, and shows the cursor (thanks @fbl100).
Not in this release: PC in the headset for Windows and Linux (not yet tested on real desktops) and eye tracking / heart rate (still in progress).
Frame Control 0.3.1: install APKs without the Android SDK
Installing APKs no longer needs the Android SDK. 0.3.0 used aapt2 to read APK files and asked you to install Android Studio's command-line tools to get it. 0.3.1 reads APKs itself, so that step is gone. Install this version and try the APK again.

New in 0.3.1
- APKs are read by a built-in parser. No
aapt2or Android SDK needed. - Python and
adbare bundled on macOS and Windows, so the app needs nothing else installed. - Sideload Linux and Windows game builds as Steam Devkit Games.
frame-control://installlinks, so websites can offer one-click installs.- Pairing tries the SteamOS devkit service before asking for a password.
- HTTPS works from the bundled Python on fresh Windows installs.
KDE Connect for the Frame (bundled dependency, 24.02.2-1)
Not a Frame Control release. This holds KDE Connect and the libraries it needs, exactly as Valve builds them for the Steam Frame (SteamOS, aarch64), so Frame Control's builds can bundle them for the keyboard and trackpad. Each binary package's complete source, Valve's own source package (upstream tarball plus PKGBUILD, no patches), is attached next to it.
| Package | Binary | Source |
|---|---|---|
| kdeconnect 24.02.2-1 (GPL) | kdeconnect-24.02.2-1-aarch64.pkg.tar.zst | kdeconnect-24.02.2-1.src.tar.gz |
| kcontacts 6.1.0-1 (LGPL) | kcontacts-6.1.0-1-aarch64.pkg.tar.zst | kcontacts-6.1.0-1.src.tar.gz |

Frame Control trailer
The 66-second Frame Control trailer (1080p60, with sound). It shows the app's features. This isn't an app release: download Frame Control from the latest release.
Frame Control 0.3.0: now on Windows and Linux
Frame Control now runs on Windows and Linux as well as macOS. Manage your Valve Steam Frame from any of them over SSH. This is an unofficial hobby project, not affiliated with Valve.
| Download | |
|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 (x64) | Frame-Control-Setup-x64.exe, or the portable Frame-Control-win-x64.zip. Python is bundled. |
| macOS (Apple Silicon) | Frame-Control-mac-arm64.dmg |
| Linux x64 | Frame-Control-linux-x86_64.AppImage, or Frame-Control-linux-amd64.deb |
| Linux arm64 | Frame-Control-linux-arm64.AppImage, or Frame-Control-linux-arm64.deb |
First run: turn on Developer Mode on the Frame and set a user password. Open the app, choose Set Up Connection, and type that password once. Full instructions
Unsigned builds:
- macOS: run
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Frame Control.app"once. - Windows: SmartScreen may warn. Choose More info → Run anyway.
New in 0.3.0
- Windows and Linux support, including first-run setup that opens in your own terminal.
- A new README and docs.
- Release builds for all three platforms come from GitHub Actions.
Tested against a real Steam Frame (SteamOS build 20260922) on Windows 11, Ubuntu and macOS:
- status and battery
- headset and desktop captures, and live video
- your Steam library
- Android apps
- screenshots
- file upload
Not yet exercised on any platform: Flatpak and APK installs from the app, the power buttons, and sending text while the headset's desktop is open. On Windows each action opens its own SSH connection, so the app is a little slower there (about 0.5–1 s per refresh).
Please report problems as issues. Include your OS, your SteamOS build, and the log from Frame → Show Server Log.
Frame Control 0.2.0 (first public test release)
First public test release of Frame Control, a Mac app for managing a Valve Steam Frame over SSH. Unofficial; not affiliated with Valve.
Needs: a Steam Frame with Developer Mode on, an Apple Silicon Mac, and python3 (xcode-select --install). adb is optional, for Android apps.
Install:
- Download the DMG below and drag Frame Control to Applications.
- The app isn't notarized, so clear the download quarantine once:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Frame Control.app" - Open it and accept the connection setup. It asks for your Developer Mode password once.
Setup details and a list of what's verified and what isn't are in the README.
What it does: live headset view (H.264 at about 30 fps) and screenshots; battery, storage and status; your Steam library, with installs onto the headset and Frame ratings; F-Droid apps as their own Lepton instances; file drop and clipboard; Flatpaks; volume.
New since 0.1.1:
- Live H.264 video of the headset view.
- Android compatibility reports are saved on your Mac. The shared database is maintainer-only for now.
- A clean error when the headset is unreachable.
- MIT license.
Please report problems as issues. Include your SteamOS build and the log from Frame → Show Server Log.
Security: Developer Mode exposes SSH, ADB and RDP on your LAN. Use trusted networks only, and see the README's security notes.
