Rooms 1.0.1

@saragordic saragordic released this 23 Sep 21:52

Supported: macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple Silicon or Intel. Universal binary.

Rooms is a little menu-bar app for switching between projects. Every project is a room: a set of windows and a layout. Press ⌥Space, type the room's name, and its windows come back, laid out neatly. Everything else hides, and nothing is ever closed.

What's in it

  • Make a room by picking its windows. They come to the screen you're on and lay themselves out.
  • Press Tab to change the layout. In ⌥Space, Tab steps through the layouts that fit your screen: Focus, Columns, Grid, your own arrangement, or Stack when nothing tidier fits. Your laptop and your monitor each remember their own.
  • Measured minimum sizes. When you save a room, Rooms checks how small each app lets its windows get, so layouts fit from the start.
  • Nothing closes. Windows outside the room are hidden or parked just off-screen, written down before they move. Show Everything, quitting, or relaunching after a crash brings them back.
  • ⌃⌥1–9 jump straight into a room, plus window snapping keys.
  • Everything stays on your Mac. No network, no accounts, no analytics.

Since 1.0.0

  • Layouts never squeeze a window below a usable size, so Tab no longer offers a layout that can't really fit.
  • Saving a room measures every chosen window, including apps that were hidden a moment before.
  • "Press Tab to change the layout" is now a step in the welcome panel.

Install

brew trust saragordic/tap
brew install --cask saragordic/tap/rooms

Already installed with Homebrew? Run brew upgrade --cask rooms, then allow Rooms again under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility if it asks.

Or download Rooms-1.0.1.zip below, unzip, and move Rooms.app to your Applications folder. macOS blocks the first launch of an app that is not notarized: open System Settings → Privacy & Security, find the blocked-app message, and click Open Anyway. Then allow Rooms under Accessibility so it can move windows.

The first release of Rooms: a little menu-bar app for switching between projects. Every project is a room, a set of windows and a layout. Press ⌥Space, type the room's name, and its windows come back, laid out neatly. Everything else hides, and nothing is ever closed.

What's in it

  • Layouts that fit the screen. Focus, Columns, Grid, your own arrangement, or Stack when nothing tidier fits. Press Tab in ⌥Space to try them; your laptop and your monitor each remember their own.
  • Measured minimum sizes, so apps that won't shrink still get a layout that fits the first time.
  • Nothing closes. Parked windows are written down before they move and always come back: Show Everything, quitting, or relaunching after a crash.
  • ⌃⌥1–9 jump straight into a room, plus window snapping keys.
  • Everything stays on your Mac. No network, no accounts, no analytics.
