Workspace root

Open a folder of repos with ⌘O, and switch between them with P.

  • ⌘O works out what you picked. A repo opens as before. A folder that contains repos becomes the workspace root, and the repo picker opens. A subfolder of a repo opens that repo.
  • The scan: up to three levels below the root. It skips hidden folders, node_modules, target, vendor, dist and build, and doesn't look inside a repo, so submodules aren't listed. Linked worktrees get a WORKTREE tag. It only reads: nothing is written to your repos.

Repo picker

Press P (or :project) to open it. It looks and works like the command palette: type to filter by name or path, ↑/↓ to move, ⏎ to switch.

  • Rows: repo name, path under the root, branch, number of changed files, and when a Claude session last ran there. A violet CLAUDE tag marks repos where a session is newer than the last commit, which usually means there are changes to review.
  • Order: repos Claude worked in most recently come first. The cursor starts on the first repo that isn't open, so P ⏎ jumps back to the last one.
  • Status strip: shows ROOT / REPO. Click it to open the picker.
  • Startup: with a root set and no repo open, Debrief starts on the picker.
  • R rescans the root, and :workspace-clear forgets it.

Install

Apple Silicon (arm64) only. Open the DMG and drag Debrief to Applications, replacing an older version if you have one. Your settings and review progress are kept.

The app is not signed or notarized, so macOS blocks the first launch. Right-click the app → Open → Open, or run:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Debrief.app

Branch history

Press H to swap the Changeset panel for the history of the active branch: the branch you're reviewing, or the checked-out branch. Press H or Esc to switch back.

  • The log: newest first, following the first parent of each merge. Each commit shows its short sha, subject, author, age, files and +/−. More commits load as you scroll.
  • Claude's commits: commits co-authored by Claude have a violet sha and a CLAUDE tag. Merges get a MERGE tag.
  • Refs: branches, remote branches and tags appear on the commits they point at.
  • Where the branch starts: a LEFT MAIN HERE divider marks the merge-base, and the base branch's commits are dimmed.
  • Keys: j/k move, g/G jump to the ends, / filters by subject, author or sha.

Viewing a commit

Press ⏎ (or click) on a commit to show it in the diff panel, read-only: the full message, author, date, parent and refs, then every changed file with its hunks.

  • ]/[ step through hunks across files, e expands a large hunk, and o shows each file whole, as it was in that commit.
  • The CURRENT REVIEW row at the top of the log, or Esc, takes you back to the review, scrolled to where you were.

History is read-only: it doesn't write anything or change your working tree.

Whole-file view

Press o in the diff to see the whole file instead of only the changed sections. The unchanged lines between hunks appear as context, with both line numbers and syntax colours. Hunks work as before: keep/revert, notes and hunk navigation all still apply. Press o again to go back to changes only. The setting stays on as you move between files, and is also available as a toolbar button and as :full.

In a branch review, the file is shown as it is at the branch tip (or in the working tree, when the review includes it).

Key change

Expanding a large collapsed hunk moves from o to e.

Themes

Debrief now comes in three themes, and follows macOS by default.

  • Daylight: a light theme. With the default System setting, Debrief uses Daylight when macOS is in light mode and your dark theme when it's dark, and switches live when macOS changes (including "Auto").
  • Ember: a second dark theme in warm charcoal and parchment. Flags, adds and deletes keep their usual colours.
  • DEADBOLT: the original look, unchanged.
  • Picking one: :theme system, :theme light or :theme dark set the mode; :theme deadbolt and :theme ember switch to that dark theme.
  • Accents work in every theme. Daylight uses darker versions so they stay readable.
  • Everything follows the theme: the console, syntax colours in diffs, the boot sequence and the title bar.

On a Mac in light mode, Debrief now opens in Daylight. Run :theme dark for the previous look.

Window size is remembered

Debrief reopens at the size and position it had when you closed it, maximized included.

Fixed

  • macOS no longer offers text completions in the command palette and the path filter.

Branch review

Review what a branch changed, not just what's uncommitted. Press B (or :target) to pick the working tree or any local branch.

  • What it shows: everything the branch changed since it left its base (origin/HEAD, else main / master / …), the same view GitHub shows for a pull request. A checked-out branch also includes the uncommitted changes on top.
  • Across several sessions: files are grouped by the prompts that produced them, even when the branch was built over several Claude sessions or a session switched branches halfway. Commits with a Co-Authored-By: Claude trailer count as Claude's work, which catches files Claude changed through shell commands.
  • BY COMMIT: t now cycles intent → commit → tree. Each commit gets a group with its message, author and whether Claude co-authored it; uncommitted changes get their own group.
  • Committed changes are read-only: they're tagged COMMITTED. Stage and discard only touch uncommitted hunks. Marking a committed hunk "revert" asks Claude, in the notes you send, to revert it in a new commit.
  • Progress per branch: each branch keeps its own review progress. A new commit reopens a file you'd cleared; a rebase that leaves it unchanged doesn't.

Console

A real terminal in the repo under review, one shortcut away.

  • ⌘J shows or hides it from anywhere, including from inside it.
  • ⌘⇧J restarts the shell.
  • O opens the repo in your own terminal app (:terminal-app iTerm to change it; Terminal by default).
  • It's your login shell, so your usual PATH and tools are there, and interactive programs like vim, less and git add -p work.
  • Keys work as in Terminal.app: ⌘C copies, ctrl+c interrupts, ⌘K clears, and ⌥ works as Meta.
  • It keeps running while hidden, and floats over the review instead of pushing it around.
  • Quitting with a command still running asks first.

Fixed

  • Status strip: a long branch name no longer pushes "LAST WRITE" out of view.
  • The CMD › label in the command bar no longer wraps.

Fixed

  • Diff toolbar layout. At the default 1440 px window size, SPC · CLEAR & NEXT wrapped onto three lines with "NEXT" cut off, and the K / J and Y KEEP / X REVERT buttons wrapped too. They now stay on one line; the file path shortens instead (folder first), with the full path on hover.
  • The boot screen shows the real app version instead of a fixed v0.1.0.

Install

Apple Silicon (arm64) only. Open the DMG and drag debrief to Applications, replacing 0.1.0 if you have it. Your review progress lives in each repo's .git/debrief/ and your settings stay as they are.

@sarasate sarasate released this 29 Sep 17:40

First release of Debrief: a desktop app for reviewing the uncommitted changes a Claude Code session left in a git working tree, in the DEADBOLT HUD look.

What it does

  • Changeset grouped by intent: files are grouped by the prompt that produced them, read from the session transcript in ~/.claude/projects. Your own edits show under UNATTRIBUTED; lockfiles and generated files are masked (override with .debrief.toml).
  • Flags: unattributed changes, TODO / as any / .only( markers, removed tests, .env changes and possible secrets (pattern name only, never the value), conflict markers, large changes.
  • Keyboard review: space clears a file and jumps to the next open one, y / x keep or revert a hunk, and viewed marks reset when the file changes again. Progress lives in .git/debrief/, never in the working tree.
  • Stage and discard: a stages cleared files minus reverted hunks; d reverse-applies reverted hunks after a confirmation.
  • Field notes: n writes a note on a file or hunk; f sends them all back to Claude as one prompt (clipboard, .git/debrief/feedback.md, or claude --resume).
  • Syntax highlighting, accent and scanline settings, and ? for every key.

Install

Apple Silicon (arm64) only. Open the DMG and drag debrief to Applications.

The app is not signed or notarized, so on first launch macOS will block it. To allow it, either right-click the app → Open → Open, or run:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/debrief.app
