Hard Corps: Uprising PC Port v0.6.1 - AppImage Startup Fix for Restricted Environments (Linux)

v0.6.1 is a small technical release for Linux and the AppImage. It fixes the AppImage not starting at all where the system cannot mount it through FUSE. That is the failure reported for the Steam Beta client on SteamOS (nothing happens when the AppImage is started from Steam in Game Mode or Desktop Mode, no game log is written, while starting the file directly works), and it is intended to resolve it. The fix is reproduced and verified in a local test environment that blocks FUSE. It has not been confirmed on SteamOS hardware yet. Please report whether the issue is resolved. Gameplay and Windows are unchanged from v0.6.0.

What changed

  • AppImage startup fix. Every AppImage begins with a small runtime that mounts it through FUSE before the game starts. When the mount is impossible, for example when Steam starts the AppImage somewhere the FUSE helper cannot work, the old runtime stopped there with "Cannot mount AppImage, please check your FUSE setup", before any of the game's code ran. The runtime in v0.6.1 falls back by itself: it unpacks the AppImage into a private folder in /tmp, runs the game from there with your arguments, returns the game's exit status and removes the folder afterwards. Nothing has to be set in Steam. A restart of the game from the launcher goes through the same steps.
  • Normal systems are unchanged. Where FUSE works, the AppImage is still mounted, not unpacked, and starts as before. A damaged AppImage is still reported as damaged.
  • Where the runtime comes from. It is built from the upstream AppImage type2-runtime source at a pinned revision plus one small patch kept in the repository (patches/appimage-runtime), instead of the released binary. The patch also fixes upstream's cleanup of unpacked files, which does nothing in the released runtime.

Linux / Steam Deck

  • Starting the AppImage directly and Steam's stable client are not affected.
  • If the AppImage still does not start from the Steam Beta, set the game's Launch Options to APPIMAGE_EXTRACT_AND_RUN=1 %command% and tell us whether that changes anything. It is a troubleshooting step, not something v0.6.1 needs.
  • Linux remains experimental. This release has not been run on SteamOS or a Steam Deck.

Windows

No functional change from v0.6.0. The release version number is new, and there is no need to update from v0.6.0 unless you want the current release version.

Requirements:

  • Windows: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), a DirectX 12 graphics card, and the latest Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64).
  • Linux: 64-bit x86 Linux with glibc 2.31 or newer (such as Ubuntu 20.04 or later), a Vulkan driver, and an X11 or Wayland desktop. The AppImage is built on Ubuntu 20.04 (glibc 2.31) and its files need GLIBC_2.30 or older.

Notes / Known Limitations

  • Steam Beta report: fix verified locally, not on SteamOS. The fix was tested by starting the AppImage in an environment where the FUSE mount fails the way Steam's log shows, with and without Launch Options. Whether the reporter's device fails in exactly that way is the part still to be confirmed on SteamOS.
  • Linux status: experimental. The Linux build is a native x86_64 program on the ReXGlue 0.10.0 Linux runtime with its Vulkan graphics backend, not a Proton or Wine build. A SteamOS tester has run it, but it has not been broadly tested on real Linux PCs or Steam Deck hardware, so rendering, audio, controllers and the Steam Deck flow may still have problems. See docs/linux.md.
  • Everything else listed for v0.6.0, v0.5.0 and v0.5.1 still applies.

Reporting Problems

If the game does not start or crashes, please open an issue and attach the newest hard_corps_uprising_*.log file from the logs folder next to the program (next to the AppImage on Linux), with a line about what you were doing. For Linux reports, please also say your distribution and graphics card, and whether you start the AppImage from Steam.

Hard Corps: Uprising PC Port v0.6.0 - Native Aspect Ratios and Performance Scaling

v0.6.0 is a feature release for the graphics and display options. It adds native aspect ratios, an internal render resolution option for slower GPUs, and graphics card selection on Windows. Gameplay is unchanged from v0.5.3.

Highlights

  • Native aspect ratios. The game now renders in the format you choose, from 4:3 and 5:4 up to 21:9 and 32:9, instead of stretching a 16:9 picture.
  • Internal render resolution. Draw the game at 75% or 50% of the render resolution to lower the GPU work on slower graphics hardware.
  • Graphics card selection (Windows). Pick the GPU the game uses, or leave it on Automatic.
  • Reduced resolution on Intel GPUs. Internal render resolution now also works on Intel GPUs that need a different rendering path.

Native aspect ratios

Choose Aspect Ratio on the launcher's Display page:

  • 16:9 Original (default)
  • 16:10
  • 21:9 Ultrawide
  • 32:9 Super Ultrawide
  • 4:3
  • 5:4

This changes the game's own rendering format rather than stretching the 16:9 image, and Window size follows the chosen format. Wider formats can show more of the sides of the scene. It also covers displays such as a 4:3 CRT or a 16:10 screen such as the Steam Deck's.

Menus and videos were made for 16:9 and are not redesigned for every format, so some HUD, menu or cutscene compositions may not look as intended outside 16:9.

Performance options

On the launcher's Graphics page:

  • Render resolution (Original, 2x, 3x, 4x) sets the target resolution of the picture, as before. It is separate from Window size, which only sets the size of the game window.
  • Internal render resolution sets how much of that resolution the GPU actually draws before the picture is scaled up to it:
    • 100% Native (default)
    • 75% Performance
    • 50% Low-end

75% and 50% reduce the internal GPU rendering resolution, which can improve performance on slower GPUs. Image quality decreases as expected. 50% is intentionally a low-end mode and can look noticeably softer or pixelated.

The internal size follows the selected aspect ratio. For example, 16:9 at 50% draws 640x360 for a 1280x720 output, and 21:9 at 75% draws 1260x540 for a 1680x720 output.

Graphics card selection

Windows only. The Graphics card setting on the Graphics page offers:

  • Automatic (Recommended), which keeps preferring the high-performance GPU, as before
  • Each compatible Direct3D 12 graphics card found on your PC

An explicit choice overrides Automatic. It is useful on systems with both integrated and dedicated graphics. It takes effect when you press PLAY, and the game restarts once if the choice needs a new window.

Linux

Linux remains experimental. The AppImage and the Vulkan build compile and pass automated validation. The new internal render resolution path for Vulkan has not been tested in real gameplay on Linux or Steam Deck hardware for this release. Graphics card selection is Windows only.

Hard Corps: Uprising PC Port v0.5.3 - Linux Launcher Compatibility Fix

v0.5.3 is a small technical patch release for Linux and the AppImage. Gameplay is unchanged from v0.5.2. The one real change is how the Linux build starts when Vulkan graphics cannot start. Windows has no functional change.

Highlights

  • Software fallback launcher. When Vulkan graphics initialization fails on Linux, the game now opens a 640x400 launcher window instead of showing an error dialog first. It is drawn in software with SDL, so it needs no Vulkan, GPU renderer, zenity or GTK.
  • Graphics error only on Play. Pressing PLAY without a working Vulkan driver still shows the graphics error window, and closing it returns you to the launcher.

Linux / Steam Deck

  • Fallback launcher. The window shows the game name and icon, the state of your game files and of graphics (for example "Game files: Setup required" and "Graphics: Vulkan setup required"), and PLAY and QUIT buttons. It stays open normally and no error dialog appears by itself. Installing game files and changing settings still need the full launcher, which needs Vulkan.
  • The graphics error stays explicit. The game still needs a working Vulkan driver. Pressing PLAY without one opens the existing error window, which says the graphics system could not start and points to the logs folder. Dismissing it returns to the fallback launcher.
  • Systems with a working Vulkan driver open the normal launcher, as before.
  • Compatibility baseline. As in v0.5.2, the AppImage is built on Ubuntu 20.04 (glibc 2.31) and its ELF files need GLIBC_2.30 or older. The system's glibc is still used; it is not bundled.
  • Linux support remains experimental.

Windows

Gameplay and Windows runtime behavior are unchanged from v0.5.2. The release version number is new, and the game window title now reads Hard Corps: Uprising Recompiled. The Windows file names are unchanged, and there is no need to update from v0.5.2 unless you want the current release version.

Hard Corps: Uprising PC Port v0.5.2 - Linux Startup and AppImage Fixes

v0.5.2 is a small technical patch release focused on Linux and AppImage compatibility. Gameplay is unchanged, and the features and performance of v0.5.1 are unchanged.

Highlights

  • Linux graphics failure window. When the Vulkan graphics system cannot start, Linux now shows a self-contained error window created directly with SDL.
  • Recompiled Linux branding. The Linux desktop and AppImage name is now Hard Corps: Uprising Recompiled, and the download is HardCorpsUprisingRecompiled-v0.5.2-x86_64.AppImage.

Linux / Steam Deck

  • Graphics failure window. Previously the error was shown with SDL_ShowSimpleMessageBox, which could depend on zenity. In some X11 and Xvfb-style environments that left the process running for more than 30 seconds with no visible window. The error window is now created by the game itself, so no zenity, GTK or shell helper is needed, and it can be shown even after Vulkan graphics initialization has failed. Dismissing it exits the game cleanly with a nonzero result.
  • Name and file names. The desktop entry is now named Hard Corps: Uprising Recompiled. The AppImage is HardCorpsUprisingRecompiled-v0.5.2-x86_64.AppImage and its checksum file is HardCorpsUprisingRecompiled-v0.5.2-x86_64.sha256. The v0.5.1 asset, HardCorpsUprising-v0.5.1-x86_64.AppImage, is unchanged and keeps its name.
  • Compatibility baseline. As in v0.5.1, the AppImage is built on Ubuntu 20.04 (glibc 2.31) and its ELF files need GLIBC_2.30 or older. The system's glibc is still used; it is not bundled.
  • Linux support remains experimental.

Windows

The Windows build has the same gameplay and features as v0.5.1. These Linux changes do not affect it; the only change that reaches it is the version number, so there is no need to update from v0.5.1 unless you want the current release version.

Hard Corps: Uprising PC Port v0.5.1 - Linux Compatibility Update

v0.5.1 is a small technical patch release. Gameplay, the launcher and the performance work from v0.5.0 are unchanged. Its purpose is better Linux and AppImage compatibility.

Highlights

  • Broader Linux compatibility. The Linux release is now built on Ubuntu 20.04 (glibc 2.31) instead of Ubuntu 22.04, so the AppImage no longer requires glibc 2.35.
  • New AppImage file name. The Linux download is now named HardCorpsUprising-v0.5.1-x86_64.AppImage.
  • Visible error when graphics cannot start. On Linux, a failure to start the Vulkan graphics system now shows an error window instead of the game exiting immediately.

Linux / Steam Deck

  • Older glibc. The release is built on Ubuntu 20.04 (glibc 2.31) and the build checks every packaged library against that baseline. The ELF files in the AppImage need GLIBC_2.30 or older, so it should run on more Linux distributions than the v0.5.0 AppImage, which needed glibc 2.35. The system's glibc is still used; it is not bundled with the AppImage.
  • File name. The v0.5.0 AppImage was named HardCorpsUprising-v0.5.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage. From v0.5.1 the name has no -linux- part: HardCorpsUprising-v0.5.1-x86_64.AppImage. The v0.5.0 release files are unchanged.
  • Graphics startup error. Previously the game could exit at once, with only a log entry, when the Vulkan graphics system could not be set up. It now shows a window saying that the graphics system could not start, that a working Vulkan driver (Mesa for AMD and Intel, or the NVIDIA driver) is needed, and that the log folder next to the AppImage has the details. This covers a failure of the graphics system to start; other startup problems are still only logged.
  • Linux support remains experimental.

Windows

The Windows build has the same gameplay and features as v0.5.0. The only change that reaches it is the version number, so there is no need to update from v0.5.0 unless you want the current release version.

A SteamOS tester has run it, but it has not been broadly tested on real Linux PCs or Steam Deck hardware, so rendering, audio, controllers and the Steam Deck flow may still have problems. Running on glibc 2.31 or newer is the build baseline, not a guarantee for every such system. See docs/linux.md.
  • Everything else listed for v0.5.0 still applies.

Reporting Problems

If the game does not start or crashes, please open an issue and attach the newest hard_corps_uprising_*.log file from the logs folder next to the program (next to the AppImage on Linux), with a line about what you were doing. For Linux reports, please also say your distribution and graphics card.

Hard Corps: Uprising PC Port v0.5.0 - Stability, Frame Pacing and Linux Rendering

v0.5.0 focuses on Linux/Vulkan rendering, Exit Game stability and another round of frame-pacing and GPU-side optimizations. It also adds a Skip intro option and corrects the Multisampling choices. Gameplay is unchanged, and everything from v0.4.0, including its CPU and GPU performance work, is still included.

Highlights

  • Linux/Vulkan: correct texture brightness. Fixed incorrect texture brightness that could cause dark images and missing glow effects. Windows was not affected.
  • Exit Game fixes. Fixed Exit Game hangs and shutdown crashes, especially visible on Linux / SteamOS Game Mode.
  • Smoother frame pacing. Each game frame is presented once, instead of a second time by a UI repaint, and the present wait wakes at the vertical blank instead of polling in 1 ms steps.
  • Less GPU resolve work, especially with a Render resolution above Original.
  • New: Skip intro. A launcher option that bypasses the startup logos and intro and goes directly to the title screen. Off by default.
  • Corrected Multisampling choices: 2x MSAA (default) or 4x MSAA (Compatibility). The old Off choice never turned multisampling off and has been removed.
  • Better automatic GPU selection on PCs with integrated and dedicated graphics.
  • Linux: the Vulkan presenter no longer rebuilds its output pipeline and waits for the GPU on every frame (fixes ReXGlue issue #507).

Linux / Steam Deck

  • Texture brightness and glow. The Vulkan shader translator read each texture fetch's exponent bias from the wrong word of the texture fetch constant (word 4, which holds the LOD bias, instead of word 3). Textures could then be scaled by the wrong power of two, which could darken images and lose glow effects. It now reads word 3, as the D3D12 renderer on Windows already did. Windows was not affected.
  • Output pipeline cache. The Vulkan presenter checked which format its output pipeline was created for, but never stored that format after creating it. So on every game frame it waited for the previous frame on the GPU, destroyed the pipeline and created it again. The pipeline is now reused while the format stays the same, and a real format change recreates it once. This fixes ReXGlue issue #507 in the port's patched runtime.
  • Discrete GPU first. Vulkan prefers a discrete GPU among the suitable devices. A device chosen with DRI_PRIME, MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT, VK_LOADER_DEVICE_SELECT, __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD or the vulkan_device setting still takes precedence.
  • Less CPU spinning in a runtime wait path: a wait on several objects now backs off while another thread holds one of them, instead of spinning.
  • The Exit Game fixes under Stability apply to Linux as well, where the hang was reported from SteamOS Game Mode.

Performance and Frame Pacing

  • Each game frame is presented once. A repaint for the port's on-screen overlay presented the same game frame a second time at the next vertical blank: about 120 presents a second for 60 game frames, and on Linux as fast as the GPU allowed. The overlay is now drawn with the next game frame.
  • Tighter vblank timing. When the game's present waits for the flip, the GPU command processor now wakes on the vertical blank instead of polling in 1 ms sleeps, which could resume up to 1 ms late.
  • Resolves copied straight into textures. When an eligible render-target resolve covers exactly what a texture samples, the texture is copied from the render target on the GPU (D3D12 and Vulkan), avoiding unnecessary decode and reload work.
  • Less resolve write-back above Original. At render resolutions above Original, eligible resolves keep their result in the texture and write the resolve memory only when something needs it, which is often never.
  • Native memcpy/memset. The game's C runtime memcpy and memset use the native host routines wherever the memory ranges allow it.
  • ThinLTO. The game is linked with ThinLTO in Release and RelWithDebInfo builds.

No new frame-rate or CPU figures are given for v0.5.0: these changes are about smoother pacing and less redundant work, and the results depend on the PC, the settings and the scene.

Stability

  • Input shuts down before the window is destroyed. At Exit Game the window was destroyed before the input system, which then touched the destroyed window during shutdown and could hang or crash it. Input now shuts down first.
  • Game threads stop before the runtime is torn down. A game thread could keep running while the runtime destroyed the kernel state and game memory, and crash a few seconds after the game had ended. Every game thread is now stopped before anything is torn down.

Together these fix Exit Game hangs and shutdown crashes, especially visible on Linux / SteamOS Game Mode (#9). The reporter has not confirmed the fix yet, and whether the B-button behaviour described in that report has the same cause is not known. Feedback there is welcome.

Launcher and Graphics Settings

  • Skip intro (Gameplay page, Off by default) starts directly at the title screen, bypassing the startup logos and intro. It only skips the presentation at startup; the game files and saves are not changed.
  • Multisampling (Graphics page) now offers 2x MSAA, the default and the fastest, and 4x MSAA (Compatibility) for GPUs or drivers that show graphics problems with 2x. The old Off choice is gone: it never turned multisampling off, and the game's 2x MSAA render targets were drawn with 4x MSAA instead. A saved Off is replaced by the default, 2x MSAA, at the next start. If Off was working around graphics problems for you, choose 4x MSAA (Compatibility), which is what Off really did. The log now says which host MSAA mode is in use.
  • GPU selection on Windows. The high-performance D3D12 adapter is preferred, and the game exports the NVIDIA Optimus and AMD PowerXpress high-performance hints. A GPU preference set for the game in Windows' graphics settings, or the d3d12_adapter setting, still takes precedence.

Hard Corps: Uprising PC Port v0.4.0 - Major Performance Improvements

v0.4.0 is a major cross-platform performance release, bringing extensive CPU, GPU and runtime optimizations to both Windows and Linux. Windows received substantial improvements to D3D12 rendering, synchronization and CPU wait behavior, while Linux now includes equivalent Vulkan/POSIX optimizations for the applicable runtime and rendering paths. The result is significantly lower CPU overhead, reduced render-target and EDRAM transfer work, improved GPU synchronization and more efficient command processing, without changing gameplay behavior.

Major performance improvements

This is the largest performance-focused release so far. The work covers the whole path between the game and the graphics card:

  • CPU wait behavior: far less busy-waiting while the game waits for the GPU and for timers.
  • GPU synchronization: the game's GPU fence wait now blocks efficiently and wakes the moment the GPU is done.
  • GPU register handling and command processing: faster handling of the stream of register writes and commands the game sends to the graphics card.
  • Command submission: how work is handed to the GPU was tuned to cut CPU overhead.
  • Render-target ownership, stencil and depth handling: fewer transfers between render targets, and transfers limited to the area that is actually used.
  • EDRAM tracking and dirty tiles: the emulated Xbox 360 EDRAM is tracked per tile, so only tiles that changed are copied.
  • Resolve behavior: less preparation work before a resolve.

Each platform uses its own native mechanisms where that is the right way to do it. The results are equivalent behavior, not identical source code.

CPU and synchronization improvements

  • A GPU fence polling loop that kept the game's main thread spinning was replaced with an efficient blocking wait. It is bounded, so the game always keeps making progress.
  • Less unnecessary CPU busy-waiting, more efficient GPU fence synchronization and lower main-thread CPU usage.
  • Timer, vertical-blank and guest critical-section waits were reworked to avoid unnecessary wakeups and spinning.
  • On the Windows test system, the game's main thread used approximately 98-100% of one CPU core in demanding gameplay before this change and approximately 14-20% of one core in representative heavy gameplay after it. Results vary with the PC.

GPU / rendering performance

  • Faster handling of GPU register writes and a more efficient command processor.
  • Better command submission, and occlusion queries that no longer stall the CPU.
  • Fewer render-target ownership transfers. A transfer is skipped only when the game is proven to overwrite the area anyway; the same EDRAM address alone is never treated as enough.
  • Less stencil and depth transfer work: transfers cover only the tiles and rows that are used.
  • Dirty-tile EDRAM tracking, and a cheaper draw path.
  • On the Windows test system, scenes that were previously demanding were able to sustain approximately 59-60 FPS, including at a high internal render scale during validation. This is a result from one system, not a guarantee for every PC or scene.

Linux / Vulkan performance parity

v0.4.0 extends the applicable performance work to Linux instead of leaving it on the older runtime and rendering paths.

  • Linux now uses the project's patched ReXGlue runtime and its patched Vulkan GPU plugin.
  • Command submission is optimized, and occlusion/query handling avoids unnecessary CPU stalls.
  • The render-target transfer optimizations were ported to Vulkan, including stencil/depth region tracking and dirty EDRAM tile handling.
  • GPU fence waits use efficient futex-based blocking.
  • The Linux command thread no longer wakes in short polling slices while it is idle, where applicable.

The Linux runtime and the AppImage passed automated build, packaging and regression validation. Linux performance has not been measured on real gameplay yet, so no frame rate or CPU figures are given for it. Reports from real Linux PCs and Steam Deck are welcome.

Runtime and build improvements

The build workflow now tracks the active ReXGlue patch set per platform and refreshes the patched runtime and GPU plugin when required, reducing the chance of accidentally using stale runtime binaries. This applies to both Windows and Linux.

Linux RenderDoc fix

Fixed unintended RenderDoc activation on Linux. ReXGlue now detects RenderDoc only when it is already intentionally attached instead of loading librenderdoc.so during ordinary startup. Normal RenderDoc debugging support is preserved, with focused loader and packaging checks to prevent the issue from returning.

Included from earlier releases

All gameplay, launcher, offline Live, portability and quality-of-life improvements from v0.3.2 remain included: the cheat menu (F10), offline achievements and leaderboards, portable user_data, the FPS counter (F2) and the launcher and window improvements. So does the v0.3.1 memory allocator fix; details are in docs/rexglue-runtime-patch.md.

Hard Corps: Uprising PC Port v0.3.2 - Gameplay and Launcher Improvements

This release brings together the gameplay, offline Live, portability and launcher improvements added since v0.3.1.

New: cheats

  • Press F10 in game to open the cheat menu. Up and Down (or the D-pad) select, Enter (or A) toggles, F10, Escape or B closes.
  • Infinite Health, Infinite Lives, Rapid Fire, Jump Height 2x, Keep Weapons on Hit, Movement Speed 2x and Super Armor.
  • All cheats are off by default. They are also set on the launcher's Cheats page before Play. Changes made in the in-game menu apply to the current session only and are not saved.
  • Cheats apply to every character and to both players in local two-player.

New: offline Live features

Everything stays offline: there is no Xbox Live connection, Microsoft sign-in or online player.

  • Achievements: the game's 12 achievements unlock locally with the usual notification and are kept between runs. They have an in-game list (F7 or the menu items) and a launcher Achievements page.
  • Leaderboards: the game's own Leaderboards screen shows your own scores, kept in a local file on this PC.
  • Download Content shows a short note instead of the Xbox Marketplace. Extra characters are installed from the launcher's DLC page.

New: portable user data

Saves, settings and player data now live in a user_data folder beside the program (beside the AppImage on Linux). Copying the program folder to another PC carries them along. Data from the previous system location (Documents\hard_corps_uprising on Windows, ~/.local/share/hard_corps_uprising on Linux) is moved into user_data automatically at the first start. If the move fails, or the program folder is not writable, the old location is used for that run and nothing is lost. Details are in docs/user-data.md.

New: FPS counter

  • A frame counter in the top-right corner shows the frame rate and frame time (for example 60 FPS 16.7 ms).
  • Enable it from the launcher's Gameplay page. It is hidden by default. F2 shows or hides it for the current session without changing the saved setting.
  • Frame rate in title is a separate, independent option that shows the frame rate in the window title.
  • The counter stays readable together with the F10 cheat menu.

Launcher and window improvements

  • The launcher remembers its position and size, and whether it was maximized or in its own F11 borderless fullscreen.
  • F11 works in both places: in the launcher it controls the launcher's window, and in game it controls the game's Display mode. The two are independent, and the game's Display mode does not change the launcher's state.
  • A saved position that is no longer on any screen, for example after unplugging a monitor, is recovered onto a visible screen.
  • During focused fullscreen gameplay the mouse cursor hides after 5 seconds without movement and returns as soon as the mouse moves.

Achievement overlay improvements

  • A visible X close button.
  • A clearer, larger B Back prompt.
  • One B press now closes only the achievements overlay, instead of also reaching the menu underneath.

Existing fixes included

v0.3.2 includes the v0.3.1 memory allocator fix: ReXGlue 0.10.0 with the PhysicalHeap::Release patch, which releases physical pages only after the game's own memory view has let go of them. Details are in docs/rexglue-runtime-patch.md.

Hard Corps: Uprising PC Port v0.3.1 - Memory Release Fix

A bug fix release. Everything else is unchanged from v0.3.0, including optional DLC character support.

Fixed

  • Fixes a memory allocator race in the ReXGlue runtime that could corrupt the game's physical memory bookkeeping when it released memory while another thread was allocating. It was found while investigating a crash on exit reported on SteamOS (issue #6): the logs showed BaseHeap::Release failed because address is not a region start, the error this race produces. The bug exists on Windows and Linux alike.
  • The release uses ReXGlue 0.10.0 with one patch to PhysicalHeap::Release, which now releases the physical pages only after the game's own memory view has let go of them. Details are in docs/rexglue-runtime-patch.md.

The crash on exit has not yet been re-tested on SteamOS with this version, so please report whether it still happens. The frame rate overlay report in the same issue is not part of this release.

Hard Corps: Uprising PC Port v0.3.0 - DLC Character Support

This release adds optional DLC character support for Harley Daniels, Sayuri and Leviathan. The launcher has a new DLC page, directly after Play, where you install your own Xbox 360 DLC packages, see which characters are installed, and remove or reinstall them later.

New: DLC characters (optional)

  • Click Install DLC... and pick your own Hard Corps: Uprising DLC package. The launcher checks it before installing.
  • Each character shows Installed or Not installed.
  • Remove on an installed character removes only that package, after a confirmation. The game and the other DLC are not touched, and you can install the package again later from your own copy.
  • Reinstalling the game does not remove installed DLC. It is stored in your user data folder, not in the game folder.
  • The DLC page is available on Windows and in the experimental Linux build.

No game or DLC files are included, and the port does not download any. You need your own Xbox 360 DLC package for each character. The launcher accepts a package only if it is a Hard Corps: Uprising Marketplace package:

Title ID 58410A18
Marketplace content type 00000002

It refuses the game package itself and packages from other games.

This was requested in issue #1 and implemented in pull request #4. v0.3.0 is the first release with DLC character support.

Downloads and install

Windows: HardCorpsUprising-v0.3.0-windows-x64.zip

  1. Unzip it anywhere you can write to.
  2. Run hard_corps_uprising.exe.
  3. On the launcher's Play page click Install from package... and pick your own Hard Corps: Uprising Xbox Live Arcade package.
  4. Optional: on the DLC page click Install DLC... for each character you own.
  5. Press PLAY.

Linux and Steam Deck (experimental): HardCorpsUprising-v0.3.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage

  1. Put it in a folder you can write to and mark it executable (right-click > Properties > Permissions > Is executable, or chmod +x).
  2. Run it and install your own package from the Play page, as on Windows. The game files go in a game folder next to the AppImage. DLC is optional and installed from the DLC page.
  3. On a Steam Deck, do this in Desktop Mode, then add the AppImage with Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library and play it from Game Mode.

No game files are included. You need your own package, this exact game version:

Title ID 58410A18 (Xbox Live Arcade, content type 000D0000)
Game version default.xex 0.0.0.3, 12,955,648 bytes, CRC32 3DF903B9, SHA-256 530EDE8ED5271051A2AB19C077A97FB167E4F30B094C292E8F59D37D0D2069DC

The launcher checks the Title ID when you pick the package and checks default.xex after extracting it. It explains if your package is a different version.

Linux status

Experimental. The Linux build is a native x86_64 program on the ReXGlue 0.10.0 Linux runtime with its Vulkan graphics backend. It is not a Proton or Wine build. It compiles, packages and passes its installer tests, including the DLC ones, but it has not yet been played on a real Linux PC or Steam Deck, so rendering, audio, controllers, the launcher (including the DLC page) and the Steam Deck flow are untested. Please report what you find. See docs/linux.md for details and known limits.

Features

  • Native static recompilation with ReXGlue SDK 0.10.0
  • The TRG launcher, with Play, DLC, Display, Graphics, Gameplay, Controls and About pages
  • Package installer with Title ID and game version checks, and Reinstall from package...
  • DLC installation and removal for Harley Daniels, Sayuri and Leviathan
  • Windowed or Borderless Fullscreen, switched while playing with F11
  • Render resolution up to 4x (5120×2880)
  • FXAA and FXAA Extreme, 2x MSAA, texture filtering up to 16x
  • Xbox 360 controller support with no setup, and keyboard play
  • Local two-player with two controllers
  • Optional frame rate in the window title
  • Settings saved between sessions

Online multiplayer is not supported.

Reporting problems

If the game does not start or crashes, please open an issue and attach the newest hard_corps_uprising_*.log file from the logs folder next to the program (next to the AppImage on Linux), with a line about what you were doing. For DLC problems, say which character and whether the launcher showed an error. For Linux reports, please also say your distribution and graphics card.

Requirements

  • Windows: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), a DirectX 12 graphics card, and the latest Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64).
  • Linux: 64-bit x86 Linux with glibc 2.35 or newer (Ubuntu 22.04 or later), a Vulkan driver, and an X11 or Wayland desktop.
