Linux install does not need FUSE or a git clone. Exported animations are plain Python.

Install the studio (Linux x86_64)

No Node. No FUSE.

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/saxonmurray85-ops/asciismash/main/scripts/install.sh | bash

That puts Ascii Smash in the app menu. ascii-smash with no arguments opens the studio.

Or download the AppImage and run it:

chmod +x ascii-smash-1.2.0.AppImage
./ascii-smash-1.2.0.AppImage

If you see libfuse.so.2, either use --appimage-extract-and-run or run scripts/install.sh on the AppImage. A .tar.gz is attached if you want a folder instead.

Play ASCII without the studio

Animate Views writes ~/AsciiAni/<name>.py. Copy that file to another PC and run:

ascii-smash <name>
python3 ~/AsciiAni/<name>.py

Python 3 is enough. You do not need the AppImage to play an already exported animation.

This build

  • Image — convert a still, Save View, Effect or Pattern (up to 120 frames), Preview, Generate Views
  • Video — MP4/WebM sample, Convert Video
  • Pattern characters, density, speed
  • Fastfetch 40-col export (file / file-raw)
  • Animate Views writes ~/AsciiAni and ascii-smash <name>

Windows portable is not in this release. On Windows: npm install then npm start, or npm run dist:win.
