ExcelMcp 2.4.0
ExcelMcp 2.4.0
Let your AI assistant create and update real Microsoft Excel workbooks: cells,
formulas, Power Query, PivotTables, charts, and VBA. MCP and CLI offer the same
features. Coding agents can use either; the CLI usually uses fewer AI tokens,
though results vary by task, model, and client.
What's New
New features
-
pivottable readnow includes a bounded snapshot of selected members, field filters, and value settings. OLAP hierarchies report their displayed caption and the selected members from every level. The result clearly marks unavailable or truncated details and can target a specific worksheet when PivotTable names repeat. (#1130) -
Power Query refresh-all now refreshes dependent PivotTables by default, with a query-only option. Added workbook-level refresh-all for all connections and PivotTables. (#1143)
-
Create new worksheet-source PivotTables using an existing report's cache with paired sharing options in the CLI and MCP. Reports with the same source can then connect to one slicer and share calculated fields;
readandlistexpose their native workbook-localcacheIndex. The PivotTable walkthrough now includes a complete shared-slicer example and clarifies calculation and refresh limitations. (#1145)
Fixes and improvements
- Fix PivotTable reads and report-filter results incorrectly treating an OLAP All member named
[AllMember]as a single selected member. Both MCP and CLI now identify single-selection All state from the hierarchy metadata exposed by Excel, regardless of the server's member naming. (#1138)
Get started
Requires Windows, desktop Excel 2016 or later, and a signed-in interactive
desktop session.
| Where you work | Setup |
|---|---|
| VS Code with GitHub Copilot | Install Excel MCP Server from the VS Code Marketplace. |
| GitHub Copilot plugins | Install excel-mcp, excel-cli, or both from Awesome Copilot. |
| Claude Desktop | Download excel-mcp-2.4.0.mcpb below and double-click to install. |
| Another MCP client | Set up the MCP Server. |
| An agent that runs terminal commands | Set up the CLI. |
Node.js 18 or later with npm and npx is required for the plugins, Claude
Desktop bundle, and npm installations. The VS Code extension and standalone
executables do not need Node.js or .NET. NuGet tools require .NET 10.
The plugins and VS Code extension include optional report-formatting guidance;
no separate skill download is needed. See the
installation guide for setup,
updates, and troubleshooting.
