@github-actions github-actions released this 04 Oct 00:20

EverythingMac 0.1.84

Changes

  • Dragging a column divider in the results table resizes only that column; the columns after it move over and keep their widths. Before, the Created column grew or shrank with every drag while the columns filled the window.
  • Resizing the window no longer changes column widths. A horizontal scroller appears when the columns are wider than the window, and the space after the last column stays empty when the window is wider. Reset Column Widths restores the default widths exactly.
  • The user guide explains that when reading a changed folder stops responding, other changes are applied without it and the folder is read again once it responds.

Validation

  • Passed the saved-index, sort, live, and feature checks. The feature check now drags a column divider through the table header and resizes the window; it fails against the old behavior. Rust code is unchanged.

EverythingMac 0.1.83

Changes

  • Folders whose details macOS withholds, such as some system folders in /private/var and /Library/Caches, are indexed as folders instead of files, so folder: finds them and file: no longer lists them. They show no dates. An existing index corrects them with Index → Rescan, or when the folder that holds them changes.
  • When reading a changed folder stops responding, as a cloud storage folder can when its provider hangs, other live updates no longer wait behind it. After 10 seconds without progress, EverythingMac applies the other changes and reads that folder again once it responds.
  • In an index saved by an older version that listed a folder twice, items added inside that folder are found by name, and removing them no longer starts a full rescan.
  • The performance guide's build commands use the current package name.

Validation

  • Passed 1,635 Rust tests, with the system-wide search cancellation test excluded, and clippy without warnings; the engine and bridge tests also passed under Guard Malloc. New tests cover folders whose details cannot be read (in full scans, live updates, and older indexes), a folder walk that stops reading, and items at the same path as another.
  • Passed the saved-index, sort, selection, feature, live, tab, terminal, and Trash checks. The feature check timed out once and passed twice on rerun, as it did on 0.1.81 earlier the same day. A fresh index of /private/var/db lists DifferentialPrivacy and CoreDuet/Knowledge, which macOS protects, under folder:.
  • Adding 10,000 items whose name 46,046 items already had took 3.8 µs each in a 5.7-million-item index, so that was left unchanged.

EverythingMac 0.1.82

Changes

  • The results column "Size on disk" is now called "Size". It still shows and sorts by the space each file takes on disk, so sparse disk images show their actual usage. size: search filters still compare logical file size, as the search help explains.

Validation

  • Passed the saved-index, sort, live, and feature checks; the saved-index check confirms the Size column's title and its on-disk sizes. Rust code is unchanged.

EverythingMac 0.1.81

Changes

  • Changing thousands of files at once, such as with chmod -R or a script that edits each file, no longer makes EverythingMac rescan the whole disk. When macOS drops some of those changes on their way to the app, EverythingMac reads them back from macOS's event history.
  • Moving a large selection to the Trash no longer freezes the app before the confirmation appears; checking which items are inside selected folders took up to 19 seconds for a million items and now takes a fraction of a second.
  • A rescan stops reading sizes and dates for the index it replaces.
  • If EverythingMac's data folder is reached through a symlink, its own saves are no longer indexed, which marked the index as unsaved again after every save.
  • Symlinks now count as files in ext:, file:, and the category filters, instead of matching only until their sizes and dates were read.

Validation

  • Passed 1,631 Rust tests, with the system-wide search cancellation test excluded, and clippy without warnings; the engine and bridge tests also passed under Guard Malloc. New tests cover dropped events, top-level Trash items, the size and date backfill, a symlinked data folder, and symlinks in filters.
  • Passed the saved-index, sort, selection, feature, live, tab, terminal, and Trash checks. Appending to 10,000 files at once rescanned every time without the replay and never with it.

EverythingMac 0.1.80

Changes

  • If Apply & Rebuild is cancelled or fails, Rescan now applies the new folders, and Settings shows that they are not scanned yet. Before, Rescan kept scanning the old folders until a relaunch.
  • Rescan after a cancelled or failed first scan now uses your include and ignore paths and exclusion patterns.
  • Apply & Rebuild no longer stays enabled, and rescans on every press, after a rebuild resolves a folder to another path, such as /tmp to /private/tmp.
  • An unreadable preferences file is no longer silently replaced. EverythingMac reports it, keeps it as preferences (unreadable).json, and keeps the folders of your index instead of rescanning the whole disk.
  • Messages from startup, such as an unreadable search library, are no longer cleared when the index loads.
  • A rescan that finishes after an internal search error now replaces the index instead of being thrown away.
  • Large changes, such as a big folder moved into place, are applied as quickly while the search window is hidden as while it is shown.

Validation

  • Passed 1,625 Rust tests, with the system-wide search cancellation test excluded, and clippy without warnings; the engine and bridge tests also passed under Guard Malloc. A new test covers a rescan replacing an index whose engine failed.
  • Passed the saved-index, sort, selection, feature, live, tab, terminal, and Trash checks, including new steps for a cancelled Apply & Rebuild, a root under another spelling, Settings left open during a rebuild, unreadable preferences, and large changes while the window is hidden.

EverythingMac 0.1.79

Changes

  • Cancelling the first scan, or the rebuild of an index that could not be read, no longer leaves the app on "Initializing". The status bar shows No index, and Rescan builds one.
  • When the index needs a rescan that cannot start automatically, the status bar now says Rescan needed instead of "Ready". Opening another index resumes automatic rescans.
  • Results stay usable while an automatic rescan runs.
  • Messages about file actions, such as a partial move to the Trash, no longer disappear right away. They stay until you dismiss them or search again.
  • Live Updates paused from the Index menu stay paused through rescans, as the user guide says.
  • Touching the monitored root folder, or changing its permissions or Finder tags, no longer starts a full rescan.
  • Files inside folders EverythingMac cannot open are no longer added to the index when they change.

Validation

  • Passed 1,624 Rust tests, with the system-wide search cancellation test excluded, and clippy without warnings; the engine and bridge tests also passed under Guard Malloc. New tests cover changes to the root folder and to folders the app cannot open.
  • Passed the saved-index, sort, selection, feature, live, tab, terminal, and Trash checks, including new steps for a cancelled rebuild, paused Live Updates, and messages kept through background refreshes.

@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Oct 09:24

EverythingMac 0.1.78

Changes

  • File changes take slightly less work to process. The list behind the Events tab is now prepared only when the tab shows it, instead of for every file event: about 5 ms less engine time per 20,000 file changes, for example during a large build or copy.

Validation

  • Passed 1,622 Rust tests, with the system-wide search cancellation test excluded, and clippy without warnings; the bridge tests also passed under Guard Malloc. A new test checks that the Events tab lists the newest 500 events, newest first, exactly as before.
  • Passed the saved-index, sort, selection, feature, live, tab, terminal, and Trash checks.

EverythingMac 0.1.77

@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Oct 08:51

EverythingMac 0.1.77

Changes

  • If macOS discards its record of file changes, as it can after a disk repair or a reinstall, EverythingMac now notices on the next launch and rescans. Before, changes made while the app was not running could stay missing from the index until you rescanned yourself.
  • An index copied from another Mac is also rescanned instead of being updated with this Mac's file changes.
  • Indexes saved by earlier versions keep working and are upgraded automatically. Versions before 0.1.77 cannot read indexes saved by this version and rebuild them.

Validation

  • Passed 1,621 Rust tests, with the system-wide search cancellation test excluded, and clippy without warnings; the engine, bridge, and file-event tests also passed under Guard Malloc. New tests open indexes saved with the current, a missing, and a different record of file changes, and check which are rebuilt.
  • Passed the saved-index, sort, selection, feature, live, tab, terminal, and Trash checks.

EverythingMac 0.1.76

@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Oct 08:21

EverythingMac 0.1.76

Changes

  • exe: and type:app now find apps. Apps are folders on a Mac, so these filters missed them before; exe:safari now finds Safari.
  • ext: and the other categories also match other folders that Finder shows as a single item, such as installer packages and .rtfd documents: doc: finds .rtfd documents, and ext:app finds every app.
  • Help → Search & Shortcuts describes this.

Validation

  • Passed 1,618 Rust tests, with the system-wide search cancellation test excluded, and clippy without warnings; the engine and bridge tests also passed under Guard Malloc. On a 4.6-million-entry index, other filters returned the same results as before, just as fast.
  • Passed the saved-index, sort, selection, feature, live, tab, terminal, and Trash checks.

EverythingMac 0.1.75

@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Oct 05:38

EverythingMac 0.1.75

Changes

  • Large file changes no longer pause searches. While a big folder is copied in, moved, or deleted, a search or scroll now waits at most about 15 ms for the index to update, instead of up to a fifth of a second.
  • Many new files in a large folder are indexed much faster: 10,000 files created in a folder of 100,000 took 2.5–4 seconds instead of 15, and the app no longer stays busy all that time.
  • When macOS asks the app to recheck a folder, only what changed is updated. An unchanged folder of 200,000 files takes 5 ms instead of about 230 ms, and its files stay selected however many are selected.

Validation

  • Passed 1,616 Rust tests, with the system-wide search cancellation test excluded, and clippy without warnings; the engine and bridge tests also passed under Guard Malloc. New tests apply large changes one step at a time, with files removed by the app in between, and check after every step that the index is complete and consistent.
  • Passed the saved-index, sort, selection, feature, live, tab, terminal, and Trash checks.
