Release 1.0.0

This is an initial release build of the ScopaEngine application for folks to play around with. The game is a Windows desktop application. It offers a very simplistic UI for this classic Italian card game. Players pit themselves against the computer playing the game to a score of 11 points. Many of the UI elements have a tool tip on hover to aide the player in making decisions while playing the game.

This game is a classic Italian trick taking card game. Players must use a single card in their hand to take tricks from the cards on the table. Valid actions on a players turn are to take a trick or throw a card. A card cannot be thrown if it can be used to take a trick. If there is a card of equal value on the table a card must take that for its trick. I.e. you cannot take a 5 and a 4 when there is a Cavallo on the table with the Cavallo in your hand. The deck consists of 40 cards with the following values:

Italian Name English Name Card Value Point Value
Asso Ace 1 16
Due Two 2 12
Tre Three 3 13
Quattro Four 4 14
Cinque Five 5 15
Sei Six 6 18
Sette Seven 7 21
Fante Jack 8 10
Cavallo Knight 9 10
Re King 10 10

The deck consists of four suits of card, each suit has the one of each of the values listed above:

Italian Name English Name
Denari Money (coins)
Spade Swords
Coppe Cups
Bastone Clubs

Players are dealt 3 cards per hand and must use all cards in their hand one at a time to either take a trick or throw them onto the table. If there are no cards on the table a trick cannot be taken and a card must be thrown onto the table. Once all cards have been exhausted in all players hands then a new set of hands are dealt to the player. This continues until the deck is exhausted called a round. The remaining cards on the table are collected by the player who last took a trick. Scoring occurs at the end of the round. Once a player reaches 11pts they win the game. The scoring for a round in the game is as follows:

  • 1pt for collecting the 7 of Denari [called Sette Bello]
  • 1pt for collecting the most Denari in a round (6 or more), no score if tied
  • 1pt for collecting the most cards in a round (21 or more), no score if tied
  • 1pt for collecting the highest point value of cards in a round one per Suit [called Primiera] (79pts or more), no score if tied
  • 1pt for making a Scopa (taking a trick that leaves no cards on the table except at the end of the round)
