What's new

Security and safety

• Fixed an unsafe file write: a crafted .fb2 could make the converter write files outside its temporary folder.
• Unsafe content is removed from books: scripts, embedded objects, forms, event handlers and javascript:/vbscript:/data: links taken from the source are no longer copied into the book.
• Zip archives are limited to 512 MB per book and 2 GB per archive, so a crafted archive cannot fill the disk.
• -d is safer: it deletes only books that were actually converted. Unsupported files, unreadable books and archives with any unreadable book are kept.
• -optimizeSource rewrites files safely: the original is replaced only after the new copy is completely written, and its encoding and line endings are preserved.

EPUB and Send to Kindle

• EPUB output was rebuilt to follow the EPUB 2 structure, so strict readers and Amazon's Send to Kindle should accept it. This covers the OPF 2.0 package, valid XHTML, a complete manifest, a correct NCX table of contents and a proper archive.
• -mailto always creates EPUB, because Send to Kindle no longer accepts MOBI.
• Stable book identifier: a re-converted book gets the same identifier, based on the FB2 document id, title and authors. Readers can recognize it instead of adding a duplicate.
• Book metadata now includes the book's own date and a clean annotation. The table of contents shows the book title.

Better books

• Images keep their original quality: JPEG, PNG and GIF are no longer recompressed. JPEGs labelled image/jpg or without a type are no longer turned into much larger PNGs.
• Formatting is preserved:
  • words split by formatting no longer get extra spaces;
  • non-breaking spaces are kept;
  • strikethrough, inline styles and poem dates are converted properly;
  • ordinary internal links keep their formatting, and only footnotes become superscript.
• Cleaner title page and TOC: books without a series, publisher, city or year no longer show empty lines or stray spaces, and untitled note sections no longer create empty TOC entries.
• Titles in joined books: a .zip with a single book, or a folder where only one book could be read, keeps the book's own title instead of the series name.
• Joined books: in joined books, each following book starts with its own cover.
• Drop caps (-dc) are applied consistently to the first paragraph of each chapter. Custom stylesheets and embedded fonts, including .woff2, are detected more reliably.
• Books with deeply nested chapters convert much faster.

More robust conversion

• Problem input is skipped instead of stopping the run: a broken .fb2, a book without text, a corrupt .zip, or a missing or damaged cover or image. Joined series are built from the remaining books.
• Folder handling: with -r, folders without access, junctions and symbolic links are skipped.
• Long titles: long book titles no longer break the conversion.
• Clearer errors: you now get a clear message when KindleGen fails to produce a .mobi, and when SMTP port 465 is used, which is not supported.
• Scripts: the app no longer crashes waiting for a key press when run from a script with redirected input.
• KindleGen is extracted once instead of for every book, and old copies are cleaned up.

Explorer integration

• The context menu is registered for the current user and no longer needs administrator rights.
• -register and -unregister now work as the help describes.

Upgrading: menus from older versions were stored system-wide. To avoid duplicate items, run Fb2Kindle.exe -unregister once as administrator, then Fb2Kindle.exe -register as a normal user.

Command line and settings

• Input path:
  • the input path can be placed anywhere among the options;
  • a folder can be given with or without a trailing backslash;
  • a path without a folder is looked up in the current folder (-a still uses the app folder).
• Saved options can be turned off for one run by adding - at the end, for example -d- or -dc-.
• -save works without an input file, so you can create Fb2Kindle.json with a single command.
• Warnings: unknown options and options given without a value produce a warning instead of being silently ignored.
• An invalid Fb2Kindle.json is reported and ignored, and the app runs with default settings.
• SMTP setup: default settings no longer contain placeholder SMTP credentials, and a missing SMTP setup is reported clearly.
• -optimizeSource reports that it does not support books inside .zip archives.
• The final summary counts only successfully converted books.
