Glint v0.6.1

Choose a tag to compare

@shadijhade shadijhade released this 24 Oct 08:23

Glint 0.6.1 is the biggest update yet. Archives of every common kind open like folders, files show their Git status, a terminal sits under the files, and previews read Markdown, JSON, spreadsheets and databases. Clean up frees space, and you can send files to another PC, share a folder with a phone, open S3, WebDAV and SFTP servers like folders, and let folder rules sort out your Downloads.

What's new

Files and folders

  • Archives open like folders: zip, 7z, RAR and cabinet files, tars (.tar.gz, .tar.zst and the rest) and single .gz, .xz, .bz2, .zst or .lz4 files. Open as archive looks inside .docx, .jar, .apk and other zips by another name, and inside installer packages (.msi), laid out as the folders they install. An ncdu export opens as the disk it describes, and Export as ncdu JSON writes one.
  • The Recycle Bin as a place, under the drives: what you deleted, every drive's, with where it was deleted from and when, Restore (with Undo) and delete for good.
  • Remote folders: S3 buckets (Amazon S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, MinIO…), WebDAV servers and SFTP servers, added under Remote in the sidebar, open as read-only folders, with previews and copying out. Their secrets stay in Windows Credential Manager.
  • Every folder opens. One Windows keeps you out of, like C:\PerfLogs, opens and says why, with Get access, as File Explorer's Continue does. With instant search on, even System Volume Information shows what's in it, read-only.
  • Paste a picture or text as a file with Ctrl+V, and Open in VS Code, Cursor, Zed, Windows Terminal and the other editors and terminals on your PC.

Git and the terminal

  • Git at a glance. Files and folders show Changed, Staged, New or Conflict, the address bar shows the branch and how far it's ahead or behind, git:changed filters the folder, and a changed file's preview shows what changed. Git needn't be installed.
  • A terminal under the files (Ctrl+`): PowerShell, Command Prompt, Nushell, Git Bash or WSL. cd in it and the pane follows; open a folder and the terminal goes there too.
  • Run a project's scripts from the command bar's Run menu (package.json, justfile, Cargo, uv), and your own scripts from a Scripts folder, on the files you choose.

Previews

  • Markdown reads as it does on GitHub, with a Source view, and a folder's README shows above its list.
  • JSON, YAML and TOML as a tree, with jq filters, and a Hex view on every file.
  • Excel, OpenDocument and Parquet files as tables, without Office. Query runs SQL over them, over CSV files and over SQLite databases, reading only.
  • Photo and music details: camera, lens and where it was taken; artist, album and cover. Batch rename gains {taken}, {camera}, {artist} and more, and the list a Date taken sort.
  • Thumbnails Windows doesn't make: a PDF's first page and SVGs. asciinema recordings play in the preview, and a Git repository's folder shows its card: languages, commits and who works on it.

Search

  • Typos forgiven. When nothing is named as typed, the index looks again for close matches: reprot finds Q3 Report.pdf.
  • Photos, videos and music by what they say: width:>1920, taken:2024, camera:pixel, duration:>5m, artist:, album:.
  • Text mode searches code by its structure (Alt+A, with ast-grep, rewrites too), the text inside PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OpenDocument and EPUB files (Alt+D), the text in pictures with Windows' own OCR (Alt+O), and documents and notes by meaning (Alt+M).
  • A calculator with units in Ctrl+K: = 3 ft to cm. Folder history can be shared with zoxide, both ways.

Tools

  • Clean up finds what can go below a folder: the build output and package caches of projects you've left alone, empty folders, temporary files and big files. With Czkawka it also finds look-alike pictures, videos and music, broken files and wrong extensions. It's on the disk-usage map as Free up space too.
  • Compare two files: code by its structure (Difftastic), pictures side by side, with a swipe or an onion skin, and any file byte by byte.
  • What grew, and where did a file go? The disk-usage map's Growth colors show what grew in the last day, week or month, and Moved and deleted lists what was renamed, moved or deleted in the last 30 days, with where it is now.
  • Safety checks. The File X-Ray adds BLAKE3 and whether a program's signature holds. Scan with Microsoft Defender, a file's real type (Magika), YARA rules, and a look for passwords and keys (Kingfisher) before you zip or share.
  • Convert pictures to JPEG, PNG, WebP or AVIF (rimage), and Find duplicates makes block clones on ReFS and Dev Drives.
  • Send to another PC with a ticket (sendme: encrypted end to end, no account), or Share on this network with a link and QR code for a phone (dufs: read-only unless you allow uploads). A share says so when Windows keeps other devices out.
  • Folder rules sort what comes into a folder: move, rename, unblock, extract or recycle it, with a log and Undo.
  • A tool a feature needs installs with one click, for your account only. Settings → Tools lists them all.

Faster

  • Name-search results reach the list as bytes rather than JSON.
  • Without instant search, folder sizes and disk-usage maps are measured by pdu, 14–30% faster than dust.

Security

  • rustls-webpki is updated for RUSTSEC-2026-0382, certificate paths through distrusted emSign intermediates. Glint has Windows check certificates, so it didn't rely on the affected code.
  • Releases are now checked against RustSec's advisories and for their crates' licenses, and the installer lists every crate with its license (THIRD_PARTY_CRATES.md).

Fixes

  • Deleting a folder and making it again at once (removing node_modules, then npm install) no longer leaves what's made in it out of the instant search index. The updated service reads each drive once more and finds what was missed.

Install

Glint 0.4.0 and later update themselves (Settings → About), or download Glint_0.6.1_x64-setup.exe below and run it. With Scoop, scoop update glint. If instant search is on, Glint then offers to update it too, with one administrator prompt. Close matches, What grew, Moved and deleted, and seeing inside the folders Windows keeps closed need the updated service.

The installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may show Windows protected your PC: choose More info → Run anyway.

Every change: v0.6.0...v0.6.1

Glint v0.6.0

Choose a tag to compare

@shadijhade shadijhade released this 23 Oct 07:42

Glint 0.6.0 brings quick search from anywhere, saved searches, previews of Office documents and fonts, deeper comparison of the two panes, and a window that snaps into halves and thirds. The instant search service is hardened too.

What's new

  • Quick search from anywhere. Ctrl+Alt+F (Settings → Quick search: off, or another shortcut) opens a search box over every drive, answered by the index as you type. Before you type, it lists the folders you use most, so it doubles as a launcher. Enter opens, Alt+Enter shows it in Glint, and Esc or a click elsewhere puts it away. Glint can keep running in the tray and start with Windows.
  • Saved searches. Save on a name search's results bar keeps the search, with the folder it searched, in a new Searches section of the sidebar. One click runs it again, and the command palette finds saved searches too.
  • Previews of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, fonts and more, through the previewers Windows has, in the preview pane and in Quick Look. As in File Explorer, files downloaded from the internet aren't previewed.
  • Compare the panes down through subfolders, and by contents. Subfolders compares what's inside folders too, Contents reads files of the same size on both sides instead of trusting sizes and dates, and Sync copies what's missing or newer inside subfolders as well, with Ctrl+Z to take it back.
  • Snap layouts and small windows. Hovering the maximize button offers Windows 11's snap layouts, and Glint works in a window as small as 500 × 360, so it snaps into halves and thirds: the title bar, command bar and panes fold to fit.
  • Every shortcut on one sheet: F1 or Ctrl+/.
  • Drag what you'd expect to. Tabs drag along their strip or onto the other pane's tabs, the list's columns and the preview pane drag wider, and a path too long for the address bar folds its start into a … menu.
  • Smoother. Menus and dialogs move as Windows 11's do (not if you turned animation effects off), the window never flashes white as it starts, and the first start after an update says so, with the release notes a click away.
  • A pass over every screen. The tools sit in a Tools menu, deleting and moving offer Undo right in their notice, empty results say what was skipped with buttons to search further, and Glint follows Windows' high contrast themes, works with screen readers in the list and the palette, and applies Text size to every label.

Security

  • The instant search service now answers on a pipe under \\.\pipe\ProtectedPrefix\Administrators\, where only administrators and SYSTEM can create one, so no other program can take its name while it's stopped. It answers 16 connections at a time, drops one that sends nothing for 10 seconds, caps a search's results, and refuses a damaged snapshot instead of following it.

Install

Glint 0.4.0 and 0.5.0 update themselves (Settings → About), or download Glint_0.6.0_x64-setup.exe below and run it. With Scoop, scoop update glint. If instant search is on, Glint then offers to update it too, with one administrator prompt.

The installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may show Windows protected your PC: choose More info → Run anyway.

Glint v0.5.0

Choose a tag to compare

@shadijhade shadijhade released this 20 Oct 11:39

Glint 0.5.0 brings undo, Everything-style search filters, zip compression and extraction, and side-by-side comparison of the two panes. Instant search is easier to turn on and sturdier on busy drives, and this release closes two security holes.

What's new

  • Undo. Ctrl+Z (or Undo in the command palette) takes back the last copy, move, rename, Recycle Bin delete, new folder, batch rename, compression or extraction, and steps further back on each press. It uses the names Windows actually gave (Keep both, - Copy), and a deleted item comes back the way Restore brings it back.
  • Search filters. Narrow a name search the way Everything does: ext:pdf (or ext:jpg;png), size:>10mb, dm:7d (changed in the last 7 days) or dm:>1y, file: and folder:. A filter works on its own too: with instant search on, ext:iso size:>1gb on This PC lists every big ISO in milliseconds. Typing in the search box filters the open folder the same way.
  • Extract here and Compress to zip file. Right-click a zip or 7z to unpack all of it into a new folder next to it, with every safety check copying out already has. Right-click files and folders to pack them into a zip next to them. Both show progress, can be stopped, and leave nothing behind if they fail.
  • Compare the two panes. Ctrl+Shift+M (or the toolbar button) marks each item that's only in one pane, newer, older, or the same date with a different size, and dims the ones that match. Diffs only hides the matches, Select picks every difference, and Sync copies what's only here or newer into the other pane.
  • A quicker address bar. The arrow after each part of the path lists that folder's subfolders and archives; the first arrow lists your drives and places. Typing a path (Ctrl+L) suggests what's in the folder you're typing in: Tab completes, Enter opens.
  • Text search. Click a file to fold its matches away, or collapse them all at once. Replace all now works line by line, as ripgrep searched (^ and $ mean a line's start and end), and writes each file safely: a write that's cut short leaves the file as it was. A regex like foo$ now matches in files with Windows (CRLF) line endings. If the bundled ripgrep goes missing (a security tool quarantined it), Text mode offers to install it with winget.
  • Instant search where you'll see it. This PC offers to turn it on and shows Indexing C: 42%… while a drive is read. A drive that can't be indexed says why, on This PC and in Settings → Instant search.
  • Sturdier indexing. A busy C: whose change journal moved on during the first read no longer starts over again and again. A heavily fragmented $MFT is indexed instead of failing, a file record caught mid-write is reread through Windows, and a damaged disk can no longer crash the service.
  • Copy diagnostics. Settings → About → Diagnostics copies Glint's and Windows' versions, the tools and instant search's state to the clipboard, ready to paste into a bug report.

Security

  • A file named .pdf that was really a web page could run its scripts in the preview pane and read other files. Previews now only show real PDFs, and a Content-Security-Policy limits what the app's own pages can load or contact.
  • Text search builds ripgrep's arguments itself again, so the app's web view can't pass flags that start programs.

Fixes

  • Keys pressed while Batch rename, Duplicates, What's locking this?, Recent changes, File X-Ray or the command palette was open could reach the file list behind it. Delete there recycled the selection.
  • File X-Ray and What's locking this? open from Text search results, and Reveal in Glint switches to Files.
  • A USB stick or memory card can be ejected while Glint shows one of its folders.
  • A name search that fails (a missing folder, a bad pattern) says why again, while folders fd can't open still don't count as errors.
  • Text mode keeps the folder it last searched; clicking a mode tab no longer resets it.
  • Smaller: Cancel keeps working when a second copy out of an archive starts in the same tab; a breadcrumb dropdown no longer shows a slow folder's contents under another arrow; clicking Turn on instant search twice runs one install.

Install

Download Glint_0.5.0_x64-setup.exe below and run it: it installs over 0.4.0 and keeps your settings, tabs and instant search. With Scoop, scoop update glint. If instant search is on, Glint then offers to update it too, with one administrator prompt. The indexing fixes come with that update, and until it's done, searches with filters use fd.

The installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may show Windows protected your PC: choose More info → Run anyway.

Glint v0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@shadijhade shadijhade released this 16 Oct 20:22

Glint 0.4.0 adds thumbnails, zip and 7z archives, and the tools File Explorer leaves out.

What's new

  • Grid view with thumbnails. Ctrl+Shift+2 shows any folder (or search) as a grid of Windows' own thumbnails, in five tile sizes (Ctrl and the mouse wheel). A folder of 1,200 photos is still on screen in 9.3 ms, and the thumbnails fill in right after.
  • Zip and 7z archives open like folders, read-only: browse them in the list or the grid, with folder sizes, previews and Quick Look, and copy out through Windows' file engine. Nothing is extracted until a file's bytes are needed, and a zip of 50,000 files lists in 57 ms.
  • Open folders in Glint from File Explorer (opt-in, Settings → Files): Open in Glint on File Explorer's right-click menu, and Glint for the folders you double-click if you want. Drives, This PC and other special places still open in File Explorer.
  • Find duplicates. Files are compared by size, then content (SHA-256). Recycle the extra copies, or replace them with hard links to the one you keep; each copy is compared byte for byte right before it's linked.
  • What's locking this? The programs holding a file open, and End to close one.
  • Recent changes. What changed in a folder and below it lately, and the folders that changed most.
  • File X-Ray. A file's SHA-256 and CRC32 (paste a published checksum to compare), its hidden streams, and Unblock for files Windows marked as downloaded.
  • Batch rename. F2 on several items: patterns, numbering, dates, find and replace, with a live preview and Undo.
  • More previews and colors. CSV, TSV and JSON-lines files as tables, SQLite databases, and programs and DLLs; the disk usage map colored by age (T); and bars in the Size column.

Install

Glint 0.3.1 updates itself (Settings → About), or download Glint_0.4.0_x64-setup.exe below and run it. If instant search is on, Glint then offers to update it too, with one administrator prompt. Coming from ShadUI Ripgrep 0.2.0? This installer takes its place and keeps your settings.

Glint v0.3.1

Choose a tag to compare

@shadijhade shadijhade released this 16 Oct 13:48

ShadUI Ripgrep is now Glint: a file explorer for Windows, with ripgrep's text search still built in.

What's new

  • A new name and icon. Glint, with a folder that catches the light.
  • Files mode. Folders open in milliseconds (System32's 5,092 items are on screen in 11 ms), and every folder shows its size in the list.
  • Instant search (opt-in). An NTFS index finds any file on any drive in milliseconds and sizes every folder as it opens. Turn it on in Settings → Instant search; Windows asks for administrator approval once. How it works and its security model: docs/instant-search.md.
  • Disk usage map. A treemap of any folder, like WizTree's. With the index, all of C: is on screen about 50 ms after the click.
  • Tabs and dual pane. Ctrl+T or a middle-click opens a tab, and Ctrl+Shift+D shows two folders side by side. Your tabs come back when you restart.
  • Quick Look on Space, and a command palette on Ctrl+K that jumps to the folders you use most.
  • A native Windows 11 look. One title bar with Windows' own window buttons, Windows 11's colors and font, in light and dark.
  • Windows' own file operations. Copy, move, delete and rename run on Windows' file engine, and the clipboard and drag and drop work with File Explorer.
  • Auto-update. From this version on, the app updates itself (Settings → About).
  • Text mode keeps ripgrep's search and replace, and Search text opens it on the folder you're in.

Install

Download Glint_0.3.1_x64-setup.exe below and run it. It installs for your account, without administrator rights, and ripgrep, fd and dust are included. The installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may show Windows protected your PC: choose More info → Run anyway.

Coming from ShadUI Ripgrep v0.2.0? Install this one by hand once. It takes ShadUI Ripgrep's place (closing it first if it's open), keeps your settings, and swaps its Start menu and desktop shortcuts for Glint's. After that, updates arrive in the app.

Every feature, shortcut and benchmark: README.

v0.2.0: The "Featherweight" Update – Cleaner UI, Lighter App, New Logo

Choose a tag to compare

@shadijhade shadijhade released this 14 Oct 14:43

ShadUI Ripgrep is now lighter, faster to work with, and has a brand-new look! 🪶 This release rebuilds the interface around a single top search bar, cuts the app's JavaScript by about two-thirds, ships the latest ripgrep, and introduces a new logo and installer design.

✨ New Features & UI Changes
Top Search Bar: Query, folder, search options and replace now live in one compact bar, so results and the preview get the whole window.
Compact Results: Matches are grouped by file with counts, exact match highlighting, and quick filters by file type or text.
Keyboard First: Ctrl+F to search, ↑/↓ to move through results, Enter to open, Alt+C/W/R to toggle options, Ctrl+H for replace, Esc to stop.
Recent Searches: Available on the start screen and in a filterable history menu.
Settings Dialog: Simplified settings where every option works, including "Open files with" your favourite editor (e.g. code).
Helpful Errors: Invalid regular expressions and missing folders are now explained instead of showing "No results".
New Logo & Installer: A fresh app icon and branded installer screens.

⚡ Performance & Updates
About 65% less JavaScript: heavy animation and UI libraries were removed, and syntax highlighting now loads only common languages.
Bundled ripgrep updated to 15.2.0, and searches now actually use it, so no separate ripgrep install is needed.
All libraries updated to their latest versions (React 19.3, Tauri 2.12, Vite 8, Tailwind CSS 4, TypeScript 7).

🐛 Bug Fixes
Replace All no longer changes more text than the search found.
Pressing Enter to search no longer also opens the selected file.
Arrow keys no longer stop on hidden items, and queries like "(" or "--help" now work.
"Reveal in Explorer" now shows the file in its folder instead of opening it.
Starting a new search no longer mixes in or cancels results from the previous one.

v0.1.1: The "Alive" Update – UI Overhaul & Dashboard Layout

Choose a tag to compare

@shadijhade shadijhade released this 26 Nov 20:05

ShadUI Ripgrep just got a massive facelift! 🚀 This release completely reimagines the user interface, moving away from a simple centered search box to a full-featured, modern dashboard layout. We've also squashed some annoying bugs to make your search experience smoother than ever.

✨ New Features & UI Changes
Brand New Dashboard Layout: We've ditched the centered view for a productive Sidebar + Main Content layout.
Glassmorphism Sidebar: Navigate easily between Search, History, and Settings with a sleek, new sidebar.
"Alive" Backgrounds: The app now features dynamic, multi-layered mesh gradients with subtle noise textures that breathe life into both Light and Dark modes.
Empty State Experience: No more blank screens! A creative "Ready to Search" placeholder welcomes you when you start.
New Footer: Added a dedicated footer for credits and quick access to the source code.

🎨 Visual Improvements
Enhanced Readability: Search term highlighting has been optimized for better contrast in Light Mode.
Themed History Panel: The history sidebar now properly adapts to your selected theme (Light/Dark/System).
Polished Animations: Smoother transitions and hover effects throughout the app.

🐛 Bug Fixes
Fixed Preview Selection: Resolved an off-by-one error where clicking a search result would sometimes open the wrong file or line in the preview pane.
Backend Indexing: Optimized how the search worker tracks events to ensure 100% accurate mapping between results and previews.
