SnapFloat v1.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 22 Oct 12:56

A reliability and privacy release. If you use the v1.1.0 AppImage, please update: in 1.1.0 it couldn't register shortcuts, enable the GNOME extension, take over PrtSc or run OCR.

Made by Shaurya Shakya.

Fixed

  • AppImage: system tools (gsettings, gnome-extensions, Tesseract, wl-copy) work again, and the X11 libraries Qt needs are now included
  • Blur is now a true redaction: nothing of the hidden text survives (the old mosaic could be reversed)
  • Copy to clipboard works on Wayland (it silently failed when the thumbnail wasn't focused). Needs wl-clipboard
  • Windows: a shortcut containing + no longer freezes the app at startup; more keys work as shortcuts
  • Markup: Done waits for "Hide private info"; editors no longer pile up in memory; Copy text reads what you see
  • Thumbnails: one being edited, dragged or pinned is never closed by a new screenshot; edited shots stay until you use them
  • PrtSc: taken only when enabled, and given back exactly as it was
  • Hide private info catches more (split OTPs, "OTP 4821", ID numbers, API keys) and no longer blurs times, dates, IPs or amounts
  • Private temp folder, single-instance lock, multi-monitor stacking, faster OCR, many smaller fixes

New

  • Markup tools: Ellipse (E), Pen (P), Spotlight (S), plus copy text from an area (X)

Install

  • Windows: scoop bucket add snapfloat https://github.com/shaurya-8055/scoop-bucket then scoop install snapfloat (quit SnapFloat before scoop update), or download SnapFloat.exe below
  • Linux: download SnapFloat-x86_64.AppImage, chmod +x it and run it; on GNOME log out and back in once. For OCR and the clipboard: sudo apt install tesseract-ocr wl-clipboard

Full details in the README. Windows support has had little testing; please report problems.

SnapFloat v1.1.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 19:28

The macOS screenshot thumbnail for Linux and Windows, and now a lot more. Made by Shaurya Shakya.

Install

  • Windows (Scoop): scoop bucket add snapfloat https://github.com/shaurya-8055/scoop-bucket then scoop install snapfloat
  • Windows (by hand): download SnapFloat.exe below and run it (SmartScreen: More info → Run anyway; the exe isn't code-signed)
  • Linux (any distro): download SnapFloat-x86_64.AppImage, chmod +x it and run it. On GNOME, log out and back in once.
  • Ubuntu/Debian from source: git clone https://github.com/shaurya-8055/snapfloat && cd snapfloat && ./install.sh

New in 1.1

  • Mac-like drag: the thumbnail lifts off and follows your cursor; a cancelled drag slides it back
  • Markup: arrows, boxes, highlighter, text, numbered steps, crop, blur
  • Hide private info: one click blurs emails, phone numbers, OTPs, card numbers
  • Copy text: all of it, or just the part you drag a box over (OCR, needs Tesseract)
  • Beautify, Combine all into one, Shift+drag to send every screenshot at once
  • Recent screenshots in the tray, delayed capture, flick to dismiss, smaller files
  • PrtSc / Shift+PrtSc capture by default (given back to the system if you turn it off)
  • Built-in uninstall, owner-only temp folder, start at login

Known limitations

  • Windows support is new and has had little testing. Please report problems.
  • KDE and other Wayland desktops: thumbnails work, but they open where the desktop puts them, not in the corner.

SnapFloat v1.0.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 17:14

The macOS floating screenshot thumbnail, for Linux and Windows. Take a screenshot, drag the thumbnail into any app, and nothing piles up in your Screenshots folder.

Download

  • Windows: SnapFloat.exe below. Run it and it sits in the tray. SmartScreen may warn because the exe isn't signed: click More info → Run anyway.
  • Ubuntu / Debian (GNOME): git clone https://github.com/shaurya-8055/snapfloat && cd snapfloat && ./install.sh, then log out and back in once.

Features

  • Floating thumbnail in any corner, with smooth slide-in and fade-out animations
  • Drag & drop into any app; also copied to the clipboard for Ctrl+V
  • Auto-dismiss timer with a countdown bar (hover pauses it), or keep until closed
  • Click to open, right-click for Copy, Save, Save As, Pin, Close
  • Custom shortcuts (default Ctrl+Shift+4 region, Ctrl+Shift+3 full screen), start at login
  • Linux Wayland support: uses the system screenshot UI, plus a bundled GNOME Shell extension for corner placement

Known limitations

  • Windows support is new. Please report anything that doesn't work.
  • KDE and other Wayland desktops: thumbnails work, but they open where the desktop places them instead of in the corner.
