v0.30.0: Opt-in call recording and bundled Claude skills

@silverstein silverstein released this 15 Oct 03:42

Minutes 0.30.0 adds opt-in automatic recording for selected Teams and Zoom desktop calls, reduces call-detection polling overhead, and restores the bundled Minutes commands in embedded Claude Code.

What changed

  • Choose which desktop calls start recording automatically. On macOS, enable call detection in Settings under AI & Privacy, select Teams and/or Zoom, then enable Record detected calls automatically. It is off by default. Automatic recordings use native microphone and Mac audio capture, show the app that triggered recording, and use the existing stop-after-hang-up countdown. A manual Stop prevents another automatic start while the same call remains detected. Thanks to @derlokmerlo for the daily-use report and per-app selection suggestion in #867. #1129
  • Call detection reuses one audio helper. Minutes checks whether a configured call app is running before querying audio and limits process attribution for unchanged app families to once per five seconds. A short local helper comparison measured 60 unique microphone/screen-capture privacy-service requests before and 2 after over 20 seconds. This is a local measurement, not a guarantee of the same CPU reduction on every Mac. Thanks to @erikcw for isolating the issue. #1134
  • The embedded Claude Terminal discovers all 25 bundled Minutes skills. Commands such as /minutes-brief, /minutes-prep, and /minutes-search load alongside personal development skills. Reopen an existing Terminal session after updating so it receives the bundled skill directory. Private Recall Chat keeps its separate configuration. #1137
  • Narrow windows keep the Meetings pane usable. The list and recording controls remain visible when Recall and the document viewer are closed, including with an old collapsed preference. Closing the last secondary pane restores Meetings, and the sole-pane collapse button is disabled. #1136

Who should care

People using Minutes for Teams or Zoom desktop calls on macOS, embedded Claude Code users missing the bundled commands, and anyone using a narrow Minutes window.

CLI / MCP / desktop impact

  • Desktop: opt-in automatic native call recording on macOS, lower call-detection polling overhead, and the narrow-window fix. Windows desktop remains experimental and unsigned.
  • CLI: no new command-line commands.
  • MCP and agent integrations: no new MCP tools. Embedded interactive Claude Terminal now loads the existing generated skill pack.

Breaking changes or migration notes

No configuration migration is required. Automatic call recording remains off unless enabled. Reopen an already-running embedded Claude Terminal after updating. Update the desktop app manually using the DMG or Homebrew.

Known issues

A 30-second gap in detected call activity rearms automatic recording, so a long mute or hold can look like a call ending. Browser calls and other desktop apps remain manual. Auto-pause is outside this release. Native capture failures do not silently fall back to microphone-only recording, and configurations requiring consent confirmation continue to require a manual start.

Signed native automatic-start, manual-stop suppression, failure-path and hang-up checks used a Zoom call. An actual Teams call was not tested on the maintainer Mac; Teams aliases and selection have automated coverage. The separate report of an old non-interactive embedded terminal is not resolved by the skill-discovery or pane-visibility changes.

Install or update

  • macOS desktop: download the DMG below, or run brew update followed by brew upgrade --cask silverstein/tap/minutes.
  • Command line: cargo install minutes-cli --version 0.30.0.
  • MCP server: npx minutes-mcp@0.30.0 with the updated local Minutes engine.

Minutes remains free and open source. Meeting files stay local; content retrieved by a connected cloud assistant becomes context for that assistant under its settings.
