aro 0.2.0

The first release shaped by people using aro. Two crashes reported on Reddit are fixed, aro now works with the bars and tools you already have, and it installs on Arch, Gentoo and NixOS.

Fixed

• Crash when hovering waybar. Tooltips and menus from bars (layer-shell popups) crashed aro. They now appear, next to the bar and kept on screen.
• Crash when saving the config. A live reload could read freed memory; it showed up for some people while toggling bar.
• Crash when quitting. Every normal quit ended in a crash on the way out.
• Abort when aro fails to start, e.g. when it cannot create its socket. It now exits cleanly with an error.
• Cursor themes with spaces in their name. cursor_theme = 'Some Theme' works, quotes included, and a theme that cannot be found is reported instead of silently falling back.
• Closing a window in monocle now animates like it does in the other layouts.
• Missing wallpaper files are reported as missing, not as "not an image".

New

• Monocle layout: one window at a time, filling the screen, with your splits kept underneath. layout = monocle, per workspace, or cycle with mod+t.
• Workspaces in your bar: aro speaks the standard ext-workspace protocol, so waybar's ext/workspaces module shows aro's workspaces and switches on click.
• Cursor theme and size: cursor_theme and cursor_size, applied live and passed on to apps you start.
• Screen sharing out of the box: aro hands its display to the portals itself. Install xdg-desktop-portal-wlr and share away.
• Three new wallpapers: dwindle, rim and lenses, as SVG and PNG, in /usr/share/backgrounds/aro/.
• Drag and drop in the overview, and reworked window moving.

Installing

• Arch: paru -S aro-git (or yay)
• Gentoo: the new aro-overlay
• NixOS: the flake in this repository, with programs.aro.enable = true

Upgrading

• If your config has the old portal workaround (exec = systemctl --user import-environment …), you can remove it.
• In waybar, replace any hyprland/workspaces module with ext/workspaces.
• GTK apps read the cursor theme from gsettings; see config.example.

Under the hood

• A headless test suite runs on every push: aro starts without a screen and small clients check popups, a bar's tooltip, workspaces, windows in every layout, live config saves and a clean quit, under AddressSanitizer.
• CI builds with warnings as errors, with and without XWayland.
• The build now declares every library aro links against.
