The conflict in Sudan has been a longstanding and complex issue, with significant implications for both the country and its people. To gain insights into the dynamics of the conflict and its impact on civilians, we conducted an analysis of conflict events data in Sudan from April 15th to June 23rd, 2023. Our goal was to understand the types of conflict events, the regions most affected by the conflict, and to predict the likelihood of civilian casualties based on various factors.
In this blog post, we will delve into the findings of our analysis and attempt to answer key questions related to the Sudan conflict. We will explore the total fatalities caused by each conflict type and examine the distribution of fatalities across different regions of the country. Additionally, we will identify the main drivers of the conflict according to the ACLED data and assess their consistency across different regions.

The figures above shows the number of fatalities caused by each conflict type in Sudan during the specified time period (15th April to 23rd June 2023). The event types are represented on the x-axis, while the number of fatalities is represented on the y-axis. From the bar charts, we can observe that the conflict type with the highest number of fatalities is “Battles” specifically "Armed Clash," followed by "Violence against Civilian" and "Remote Violence." These three conflict types account for the majority of the fatalities during the analyzed period. The "Armed Clash" event type has the highest number of fatalities, indicating that direct conflicts between armed groups have resulted in significant loss of life. "Remote Violence" refers to attacks carried out from a distance, such as aerial bombings or shelling, which also contribute to a substantial number of fatalities. On the other hand, "Protests" and "Riots" show relatively lower numbers of fatalities. This suggests that these conflict types, while potentially disruptive and violent, have resulted in fewer casualties compared to the more direct and intense forms of conflict.

The figures above illustrate the number of fatalities in each region or state of Sudan during the specified time period (15th April to 23rd June 2023). Each state is represented on the x-axis, while the number of fatalities is depicted on the y-axis. From the bar charts, we can observe that certain regions have experienced a higher number of fatalities compared to others. The state with the highest number of fatalities is indicated by “West Darfur”, followed by Khartoum and North Kordofan. These regions have been severely affected by the conflict, with a significant loss of life during the analyzed period. On the other hand, Kassala and Aljazeera show relatively lower numbers of fatalities compared to the rest of the regions. This suggests that these areas have experienced relatively less violence and conflict-related casualties during the specified time period.
By analyzing the bar charts, we can identify the event types that were most prevalent during this period. "Armed Clash" emerges as the most frequent conflict event, indicating direct conflicts between armed groups in Sudan. It is followed by "looting\property destruction " and "Attack," which also had a considerable number of incidents. Understanding the distribution of conflict events is crucial for comprehending the nature and dynamics of the Sudan conflict. It provides valuable insights into the types of violence prevalent in the region, the areas most affected, is Khartoum, North Darfur and South Darfur. By studying these patterns, policymakers and stakeholders can develop targeted strategies to address specific conflict event types and work towards sustainable peace and stability in Sudan.
