Windows download — Looking Glass (v0.32.0-preview.2, experimental)
Alice now walks at a brisk pace with her steps matched to the distance she moves. This update fixes the walking-cadence report in issue #2, via PR #3.
Download Looking Glass for Windows x64 (10.4 MiB). Extract the whole ZIP and open Launch.cmd. No Rust, Python or separate 7-Zip installation is needed. Original game data is required and is not included.
What changed
- Walking targets 104 units/s: the brisk pace selected during testing, twice the slower test build. The animation remains driven by actual movement so the feet and body stay synchronized.
- Gentle controller-stick input starts the walking animation sooner.
- Running remains at 320 units/s. Walking jumps now cover less horizontal distance than in preview.1; use the run modifier for longer jumps.
- Save format 12 is unchanged. Install this preview in a fresh folder and back up your saves before following the upgrade instructions.
Verification
- 668 Rust unit tests passed; one asset-dependent test remains ignored. All 19 source-package and setup tests passed.
- GitHub's Windows checks passed on the frozen release commit.
- The packaged executable passed original-data animation/cadence and save-continuation checks, the school physics route, the village-to-Pandemonium route, campaign-graph checks, registry determinism and item checks. The village route finished with six jumps, two throws and no combat damage.
- The extracted package's setup connected an existing compatible game-data folder, and Launch.cmd successfully loaded its configured data.
- Launch.cmd also passed the native rendering checks on Anode using the exact packaged executable: walking, jumping, climbing, paired rope strokes, paused poses and matching saved render states.
- Every packaged payload file is hashed in MANIFEST.json. All 708 source files match the frozen public commit, allowing only Git line-ending normalization. BUILD_INFO.json records the exact compiler, executable, source archive and helper hashes.
This is an unsigned experimental Windows preview, listed as Latest for download discoverability. Steam Deck/Proton, a new complete campaign replay, clean-account installation and audible playback have not been verified for this update. See known issues.
Build and checksums
Built from public commit 02209704246e7c8fbb5ee714fa7ae081cadbba53, with rustc 1.98.1, for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc and a statically linked C runtime. The audited source snapshot and ENGINE_SOURCE_MANIFEST.json are attached for developers; players only need the Windows ZIP.

Looking Glass is an unofficial re-remaster of American McGee's Alice, bringing compatible English 2011 rerelease game data into a newly written, open-source Rust engine. This experimental Windows x64 preview includes guided setup, controller support and modern display options. It runs independently of the original executable and of Alice: Madness Returns. Original game data is required separately.
Original game rights and distribution

Cutscenes from the first two chapters — Dementia and Pandemonium lead into
combat and exploration. Meet the Rabbit and Cheshire Cat, collect the Vorpal
Blade, hear the Gnome's warning through subtitles, and take the minecart ride.
Actual in-engine footage at normal speed, edited with titles and transitions;
720p, 30 fps. The recordings are silent; dialogue subtitles are enabled.
Want more of the opening story? Two separate one-minute edits:
- Chapter 1: Dementia — Alice's arrival, Cheshire, the Blade and the little door.
- Chapter 2: Pandemonium — the Gnome's warning and the minecart sequence.
Recording and editing details.
Why try it?
- Guided setup and a portable folder; no changes to your Steam or original game installation.
- Xbox/XInput controller support, rebinding, sensitivity/deadzone adjustments and disconnect pause.
- Window presets up to 4K, borderless desktop-resolution fullscreen and adjustable third-person camera distance.
- A chapter chooser for all 39 campaign visits, including return visits and difficulty selection.
- Four manual save slots, quick save, autosave, picture previews and recovery from the previous validated save.
- MIT-licensed new engine source, reproducible bug reports and automated Windows checks.
Preview status
Campaign, combat, puzzles, traversal and story systems are implemented, with remaining fidelity gaps. Five earlier automated campaign lineages completed all 39 visits; one was a fresh uninterrupted run, while four used earned checkpoints. This is route evidence, not certification of every original scene or sound. Exact campaign audit.
Known differences remain in cutscenes, effects, materials, enemy behavior and a reported waterside rope grab. Clean-account installation, audible output and broader hardware compatibility have not been verified. Windows x64 / English 2011 vanilla data is the tested combination. Known issues.
This preview is unsigned. Windows may show an unknown publisher; verify the source and checksum instead of disabling security software.
Saves and updates
Use normal map exits to carry campaign progress; the chapter chooser starts a fresh visit. Looking Glass uses save format 12; original-game saves are incompatible. Install updates into a new folder and keep a backup of your existing private/ folder. Do not delete the old installation until the new one works.
Build details, checksums and verification (advanced)
- Engine source: public commit 8f0149c, matching all 479 original build inputs except documented Git line-ending normalization in 152 files. The tested executable is reused, not represented as a new build from that commit.
- Rust 1.98.1,
x86_64-pc-windows-msvc, statically linked C runtime. - 665 Rust unit tests passed, one ignored on the matching source. Installer and packaging tests use synthetic data and cover invalid input, cancellation and retained settings.
- Exact executable: campaign graph, registry and items checks passed. An earlier campaign-legs check hit its 180-second harness limit and is incomplete.
- Guided setup, a complete verified data download/import and a second launch were tested on the development machine.
