Snappy 1.1.1 is all about staying out of your game's way.

Lighter while you play

• Input overlay: it only redraws when you actually press or move something. With an overlay on, Snappy's own CPU use dropped from about 12% of a core to under 2%.
• High polling rate mice: input is read in batches, and the mouse is only listened to when a layer draws it. A 4000 or 8000 Hz mouse no longer wakes Snappy thousands of times a second.
• Recording priority: FFmpeg only gets raised priority while frames stay on the graphics card, where it barely uses the CPU. When it has to do real CPU work it shares fairly with the game, and the CPU encoder steps back and uses a lighter preset.
• Facecam: it reuses its frame memory instead of making a new 2 MB buffer 30 times a second, uses fewer threads and gives way to the game.
• Minimized window: Snappy stops sending the library window updates while it's minimized.
• Intel Quick Sync: PCs with only Intel graphics now record on the graphics chip instead of the CPU.

Fixed

• The input overlay could freeze in recordings after you had opened and left the Studio tab.

New in Settings

• Performance hints: Snappy looks at your PC and your settings and points out what's likely to cost frames, like 120 fps recording, the CPU encoder, a monitor and encoder on different graphics chips, or Studio layers, which copy every frame through the CPU.
• Level meters: desktop audio and the mic now have live level bars, so you can check both before a round.

The mascot

Tap it and it blushes. Three quick taps and it hops with little hearts. Keep poking and it gets dizzy. Rub the pointer back and forth over it and it closes its eyes and leans in. Its eyes now fade smoothly between moods, and it blinks more naturally.

Snappy 1.1.0 — a bigger Studio, sharper input overlays, and audio split by program.

Studio

• Arrange on a still of your screen. Press the snap hotkey (Alt + F2 by default) while Studio is open and Snappy takes one picture of your screen to place layers on, exactly where they will end up in your clips. The old live preview is gone, along with the constant screen copying it did in the background.
• Rebuilt input overlays. Pick just the keys you care about, a whole keyboard, or your mouse with its buttons, wheel and movement. Presets for shooters and MOBAs, an accent colour, and a single renderer behind both the preview and the recording, so what you arrange is what gets recorded.
• Better placing. Layers snap to the edges, the middle and to each other, with guides while you drag, and overlays keep their shape when you resize them.
• The snap disappears by itself once you leave Studio.

Audio

• Split by program (Settings → Audio, under separate audio tracks). Every program that made a sound gets its own track in the clip: the game, a call, music. In the editor each one becomes its own lane, so muting the call really removes the call and leaves everything else. Programs that stayed quiet are skipped. Needs Windows 11, is off until you turn it on, and counts for clips you save from then on.

Library

• A folder that loses its last clip removes itself instead of staying behind empty.

Fixes and small things

• Snappy no longer keeps a copy of your screen running while the Studio tab is open, which is the most likely cause of the crashes some people saw there.
• The mascot stretches when nothing is going on, and reacts if you poke it.

Fixed

• Recording didn't start on some PCs with two graphics chips, for example a laptop, or a Ryzen CPU with built in graphics next to a separate graphics card. The error mentioned "AMF failed to initialise" or "No such device".
  Snappy now only keeps frames on the graphics card when the encoder belongs to that same card, and if a way of recording keeps failing to start, it switches to another one on its own, with the CPU encoder as the last resort.
• The sidebar shows a readable message instead of FFmpeg's raw error text.

Update

Snappy updates itself once your PC has been idle for a while. To update right away, open Settings, go to About and click Check now.

Install

Download SnappySetup-1.0.0.exe below and run it. It installs for your Windows account, so no admin rights are needed,
and from then on Snappy updates itself.

The setup isn't code signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you. Click More info, then Run anyway.
