Release 0.5.3
Release Notes
Overview
This release brings significant internal restructuring, improved packaging, and a smoother shutdown experience. Loadbars has been modularized into proper Perl packages, Debian packaging is now fully supported, and several long-standing annoyances have been resolved.
Features
--hasagentparameter — Explicitly control SSH agent forwarding behavior, giving users more flexibility when monitoring remote hosts.- Debian package support — Loadbars can now be installed as a
.debpackage with proper dependency tracking (includingopenssh-client), making deployment on Debian/Ubuntu systems straightforward.
Improvements
- Instant process shutdown — Quitting loadbars now terminates all child processes immediately rather than waiting for timeouts, including on Debian Squeeze.
- Modular codebase — The monolithic script has been split into dedicated Perl modules (
Loadbars::Main,Loadbars::Config,Loadbars::Utils,Loadbars::HelpDispatch,Loadbars::Shared), improving maintainability. - Dynamic versioning — The version number is now read from a
.versionfile rather than being hard-coded, eliminating version string drift between releases. - Cleaner termination output — PID tracking now uses a hash, producing more informative messages when worker processes are shut down.
Bug Fixes
- Config file write failure no longer crashes loadbars — If
~/.loadbarsrccannot be overwritten (e.g., permissions), loadbars now warns instead of exiting. - Font rendering restored — Fixed a regression where the SDL font display stopped working after the modularization refactor.
- Minor typo fixes in documentation and help output.
Breaking Changes
- FreeBSD support has been dropped. The
linprocfs-based CPU stat collection path has been removed. Users on FreeBSD should remain on v0.5.2 or earlier.
