Release 0.6.0

Release Notes

Overview

This release introduces network traffic monitoring as a major new feature, bringing real-time visualization of incoming and outgoing network traffic alongside existing CPU, memory, and load average displays. Documentation and help screens have been significantly overhauled.

New Features

  • Network traffic monitoring — Visualize real-time incoming and outgoing bandwidth usage per network interface. Incoming traffic bars draw from the top, outgoing from the bottom, making it easy to distinguish direction at a glance.
  • --netint parameter — Specify which network interface to monitor (e.g., eth0, wlan0).
  • --linkspeed parameter — Set the reference link speed (e.g., gigabit) so traffic bars scale meaningfully against your connection capacity.
  • --netusepeak parameter — Enable peak usage tracking for network traffic, similar to existing CPU peak display.
  • Network hotkeys — Press 3 to toggle the network display. Use dedicated keys to increase or decrease the reference link speed on the fly without restarting.

Improvements

  • Differentiated polling intervals — CPU stats are now polled every 0.1s, network stats every 0.5s, and memory/load stats every 1s. This balances responsiveness with resource usage.
  • Faster CPU parsing — Replaced regex-based CPU line parsing with index() for lower overhead, especially on many-core systems.
  • Reduced regex usage — Load average regex is now only applied when needed, cutting unnecessary pattern matching on multi-core hosts.
  • Remote stats via Perl — Data gathering over SSH now uses Perl instead of Bash, improving consistency and parse reliability.
  • Expanded documentation — The man page, plain-text help, and POD documentation have been substantially rewritten to cover all new options.
  • Help screen refresh — Help dispatch has been reorganized for clarity, with extended toggle descriptions.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed network stats overrun bug that could produce incorrect bandwidth readings.
  • Fixed CPU peak bar rendering regression — max peak line displays correctly again.
  • Fixed --title option not being saved to .loadbarsrc (configuration titles were incorrectly persisted).
  • Removed SSH reconnect sample limit, improving reliability for long-running sessions.

Breaking Changes

  • --factor switch removed — The scale factor option has been dropped. If you relied on this in scripts or configuration files, remove it before upgrading.
  • Hotkey reassignment — Memory toggle is now 2 (previously another key) and network toggle is 3. Review h (help) in-app for the updated keymap.
  • Several command-line options were renamed in the v0.4→0.5 cycle; ensure your .loadbarsrc and wrapper scripts use current option names.
