358/2 Days for Android: beta 4 (0.1.4)

Fourth beta of KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days for Android (AYN Thor, both screens), built on khdays-port 0.1.4, Yokimitsuro's native PC port that this Android version follows. All the credit for the port itself goes there.

Updating from beta 1, 2 or 3: install this one by hand

The in-app update in betas 1 to 3 offers the new version but fails with "the download did not complete". This beta fixes that. This one time, update by hand: download khdays-358-android-0.1.4-beta4.apk below and open it on the device. It installs over your current copy and keeps your game, HD files and saves. Updates after beta 4 install from inside the game again.

What's new since beta 2

• In-game updates work: the download is saved to the game's own folder, then Android installs it.
• The update window's red "QUESTION" title no longer runs into the text, and the text is shorter.
• The French, German, Italian and Spanish text in the update window shows accented letters correctly.

Everything from beta 2 is included: the restored Stop magic, the cleaner sound and the mod memory scripts from upstream's 0.1.4.

Install (new players)

1. Download khdays-358-android-0.1.4-beta4.apk below and open it on the device to install it (allow installs from your browser or file manager when Android asks).
2. Copy your ROM onto the device: the .nds file of your own KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days cartridge, the European or the North American release.
3. Open 358/2 Days, press Choose ROM file and pick it. It is checked and unpacked (about 400 MB of free space needed); then press Play.

Coming from a test build (not a beta)? Those were signed with a different key: copy Android/data/com.sonofskywalker3.khdays358/files somewhere safe, uninstall the test build, install this, and copy the folder back. See beta 1's notes for the details.

HD cutscenes and menus are optional and made on a Windows PC with KH358-2-Days-PC-Setup-0.1.4-us.exe (below) from your own HD 1.5+2.5 / 2.8 copies; the steps are in README.

If you have beta 1, the app offers this update by itself; installing it over beta 1 keeps your game, HD files and saves.

What's new since beta 1

From upstream's 0.1.4:

• The Stop magic is back. Days left it unfinished; the port restores it: it holds enemies still and deals the damage they took while stopped, with its panels in the camp and the moogle's shop, Magic LV and Doublecast, and multiplayer. It's on by default; Settings → General → Stop magic turns it off for the game as the DS had it.
• Cleaner sound: channels are read smoothly between their samples instead of with the DS's hard steps, mods' sounds keep their quality, and a limiter replaces clipping.
• Mods' scripts can read and write the game's memory.

On the Android side:

• The new mod memory reads work on Android too (they relied on a Windows-only check).
• The README now has a video of it running on the Thor.

First beta of KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days for Android, made for the AYN Thor's two screens.

From this release on, the app checks this page for newer betas and offers to update itself.

Coming from a test build? Read this first

The test builds were signed with a development key; this beta and everything after it are signed with the port's own release key. Android will not install it over a test build, so this once:

1. Copy Android/data/com.sonofskywalker3.khdays358/files somewhere else on the device (a file manager or a PC over USB). Your saves are in its saves/ folder; data/ and mods/ hold the game and the HD files, so keeping them saves setting them up again.
2. Uninstall the test build. This deletes that folder, so make sure the copy finished.
3. Install this beta, then copy the folder back to the same place before opening the app.

The in-game settings are reset by this; set them again from the menu (L3).

What's new since test build 2

• Continue shows your saves. The HD save list now lists your files, its cursor moves, and loading works (it had shown the DS's three-slot page with a cursor that would not move).
• Speakers' portraits are whole in conversations: the face, its frame and the name plate (they were cut off at the top of the text box).
• Home and sleep no longer restart the game; both screens come back as they were.
• The lower screen shows the crown mark under the port's own screens (the save list, the theater, the rooms).
• Updates in the app: it finds newer betas here and offers them.
• With the Session log setting on, a play session's button presses are written down beside the log, so a reported problem can be played back exactly.
• Upstream's latest fixes: HD movies fade in and out like the scenes, the pause menu follows the HUD size, HD fonts and mods' scripting improvements.

Install (new players)

1. Download khdays-358-android-0.1.4-beta1.apk below and open it on the device to install it (allow installs from your browser or file manager when Android asks).
2. Copy your ROM onto the device with a USB cable or an SD card, into any folder: the .nds file of your own KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days cartridge, the European or the North American release.
3. Open 358/2 Days. The setup screen asks for the ROM: press Choose ROM file and pick it. It is checked and unpacked (about 400 MB of free space needed); then press Play. From then on the app opens straight into the game.

The setup screen works by touch, or with the D-pad and A (B goes back). In the game, the settings menu opens with L3 (press the left stick in).

HD cutscenes and menus (optional)

They are made on a Windows PC from your own copies of the HD collections, then copied over:

1. On a Windows PC with KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX (Steam or Epic), download KH358-2-Days-PC-Setup-0.1.4-us.exe below and run it. It is the PC port's own installer with North American support added. When it asks for your ROM, give it your .nds file (European or North American). Tick HD videos, and HD menus too if you also have KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.
2. When it is done, copy the folder it installed to onto the device, all of it, into any folder (such as Download). The HD videos take several GB.
3. On the device, long-press the app's icon and choose Set up / add HD files, then Choose the copied folder and pick it. The app finds the HD files inside it, copies them in, and shows what was added. They are on the next time you play. It then offers to delete the copy you made, to get the space back.

Good to know

• The game, the HD files and your saves are kept in Android/data/com.sonofskywalker3.khdays358/files (saves in saves/). Uninstalling the app deletes that folder, saves included. Installing a newer beta over this one keeps everything.
• Known issue from the PC port itself: the dark corridors Organization members arrive through can flicker and show jagged shards for single frames. Please report that one upstream.
• The North American release gives the same results as the European one in every automated run on the PC, but has not been played through by hand.
• With a North American cartridge the game's text is English or French; another system language falls back to English.
