Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.2.4 alpha

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@soyjxck soyjxck released this 13 Oct 22:06

Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.2.4 alpha, for Windows. The game's own code runs on about a third less CPU. The macOS build of this version follows; Mac players, use 0.2.3 alpha until it is here.

A native port of Drakengard 3 (PS3, US release BLUS31197, the 1.01 update), made by static recompilation. Nothing of the game is included: you need your own disc (dumped and decrypted), the game's 1.01 update package, and the DLC packages you own. The setup takes them from there. README.txt in the download has the details.

Downloads

  • dod3-recomp-v0.2.4-alpha-win64.zip: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.

Updating: unzip over the old folder, or copy your game and gamedata folders and dod3.ini into the new one. Saves and settings carry over.

New

  • Faster. The game's code, translated from the PlayStation 3's, was translated again with a better translator: the same game, in fewer instructions. Its two main threads use about a third less of the processor for the same frame. Measured on an i9-13900K with the frame rate uncapped at 1280x720, against 0.2.3: the hub between missions 187 → 205 frames a second, the first chapter's battle 179 → 208. With a cap of 60 or 120 nothing changes on a PC that already held it; a slower processor holds its frame rate in more places, and the title screen comes up about a second sooner.
  • A smaller download. The zip is 110 MB where it was 141, and dod3.exe 293 MB where it was 430.

Nothing else is different: the same settings, the same saves, the same picture.

What you need

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, a GPU with Direct3D 12 and a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell / AMD Zen or newer). About 16 GB of disk space (+10 GB for the Japanese voice pack).
  • Your disc as a decrypted .iso or a folder (PS3 Disc Dumper writes one).
  • The 1.01 update package, UP0082-BLUS31197_00-DOD3PATCH0000000-A0101-V0101-PE.pkg.
  • Optionally, your DLC packages (UP0082-NPUB31251_00-...). No licence files are needed.

Installing

  • Unzip, run dod3.exe, add your files in the setup (any order; each is recognised by itself), Install, Start Game.

Settings, from the Graphics Settings, System Settings and Advanced Graphics pages in the game's own Settings menu (or dod3.ini): any internal resolution up to 4K and beyond, windowed / borderless / full screen, a frame-rate cap of your choice, adaptive or uncapped, FXAA or MSAA, 16x anisotropic filtering, a wider field of view, shadow quality, draw distance and tree detail, the button prompts, the mouse's sensitivity, skipping the intro logos and movie, and pausing or muting in the background.

Known issues

  • All of the game's code is new in this version, and it has been checked where a machine could check it: a self-checking build of it went through the first chapter's battle and the hub without reporting anything, the collision test agreed with its reference on 30 million calls, and the translator's own tests pass. The later chapters have not been played through on it. If something happens that 0.2.3 did not do, 0.2.3 is still there to go back to (saves work in both), and a report with dod3.log is welcome.
  • Some scenery still appears as you approach it whatever the two distance settings say: the game loads the further parts of a level only as you get near them, and nothing of a part can be drawn before it is loaded.
  • Tree Detail does not change the trees already on screen; it is seen from the next area the game loads (a new verse, or the next part of a level).
  • Adaptive suits a machine with frame rate to spare. Where the scene runs at about 60 it keeps changing between the steps around it; on such a machine a fixed 60 remains the setting to use.
  • The even spacing of the frames under a cap was measured at 60 and 120 frames a second, with v-sync off and on, on a 120 Hz display. With v-sync on and a cap that is not the display's refresh rate or a whole fraction of it, the display's own steps will still show; that case has not been measured.
  • Exclusive full screen (RSX_DISPLAY = fullscreen) can lose the picture or stall when you switch to another window. Use borderless, which covers the display the same way.
  • A few places still show PlayStation 3 buttons whatever the prompt setting: "Press the START Button" on the title screen, "Press START to Skip" in cutscenes, the Circle on the dragon's icon and the pad pictured on the controller settings page.
  • The keyboard and mouse have been tested on foot; the dragon sections have not been checked with the mouse yet. The camera speed change does not apply to the dragon.
  • The Vulkan renderer (RSX_BACKEND = vulkan) is experimental and slower than Direct3D 12.
  • The game has been tested on few machines (an RTX 4090 / i9-13900K at 4K, an M1 Pro at 1080p), so reports with dod3.log are welcome.

Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.2.3 alpha

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@soyjxck soyjxck released this 12 Oct 11:14

Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.2.3 alpha, for Windows and macOS. A smoother camera, two new distance settings, and two fixes.

Downloads

  • dod3-recomp-v0.2.3-alpha-win64.zip: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
  • dod3-recomp-v0.2.3-alpha-macos-arm64.zip: Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 13 Ventura or newer.

Updating: on Windows, unzip over the old folder, or copy your game and gamedata folders and dod3.ini into the new one. On macOS, replace the app; the game's files in ~/Library/Application Support/Drakengard 3 Recompiled stay where they are. Saves and settings carry over.

New

  • A camera that turns evenly (Windows). With a frame-rate cap the game made its frames on time, but they reached the screen unevenly, 13 to 20 ms apart at 60 frames a second, and a steady turn of the camera juddered. The frames are now shown at even intervals whenever a cap is set: at 60, the share of frames more than 15% off the one before fell from about half to a few in a hundred.
  • Frame Rate: Adaptive (Settings > Graphics Settings). With no cap at all the frames take anything from 5 to 20 ms each and the picture judders however high the frame rate reads. Adaptive is a cap that follows the scene: the highest of 120, 110, 100, 90, 80, 72, 66, 60 and so on down to 30 that the game keeps up with, lowered at once when a scene gets heavy and raised again after two steady seconds. On a fast PC, use it in place of Unlimited. Where the game runs at about 60, a fixed 60 is still the better choice (see the known issues).
  • Draw Distance (Settings > Advanced Graphics): props, bushes and small trees of the open areas are drawn from 2, 3, 5 or 10 times as far away, so fewer of them appear in front of you as you run. It changes at once.
  • Tree Detail (Settings > Advanced Graphics): the large trees are drawn from 2, 3, 5 or 10 times as far away, and stay their full models that many times as far before they turn into flat pictures of themselves. It takes effect in the next area the game loads.

Fixed

  • Light shafts and glows at high resolutions. Above the original resolution the shaft of light through the roof in the first chapter's hut broke into a ladder of slanted copies, and the glow of embers and lamps into a grid. Both look as they do at the original resolution now, at any internal resolution.
  • The date on your saves. Saves were stamped with a wrong date, 1970 or 1933 on Windows, in place of the day they were made: on Windows the game was told the time since the PC was started, and on both platforms it was told no time zone. New saves carry the right date and time. A save made before this update keeps the date it was written with until the game saves again.

What you need

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, a GPU with Direct3D 12 and a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell / AMD Zen or newer); or a Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 13 or newer.

Installing

  • Windows: unzip, run dod3.exe, add your files in the setup (any order; each is recognised by itself), Install, Start Game.
  • macOS: unzip and open Drakengard 3 Recompiled.app. The app is not notarised, so macOS refuses it the first time: on macOS 15 and later open it once, then allow it under System Settings > Privacy & Security ("Open Anyway"); on macOS 13 and 14, Control-click the app, Open, then Open again. The setup then runs as on Windows; the game's files go to ~/Library/Application Support/Drakengard 3 Recompiled.

  • Some scenery still appears as you approach it whatever the two distance settings say: the game loads the further parts of a level only as you get near them, and nothing of a part can be drawn before it is loaded.
  • Tree Detail does not change the trees already on screen; it is seen from the next area the game loads (a new verse, or the next part of a level).
  • Adaptive suits a machine with frame rate to spare. Where the scene runs at about 60 it keeps changing between the steps around it: on an M1 Pro in battle it moved among 50, 55, 60, 66 and 72 every few seconds and averaged 55 frames a second, where a fixed 60 held 59 to 60. On such a machine, and on the Mac, 60 remains the setting to use.
  • The even spacing of the frames is in the Windows renderers only. It was measured at 60 and 120 frames a second, with v-sync off and on, on a 120 Hz display. With v-sync on and a cap that is not the display's refresh rate or a whole fraction of it (Adaptive settling at 90 on a 60 Hz display, say), the display's own steps will still show; that case has not been measured.
  • macOS: the light shaft itself has not been looked at on the Mac at a higher resolution. The change behind the fix is in place there and was checked on recorded scenes (at twice the resolution, under 1% of a frame's pixels differ with it, and the one visible difference is as at the original resolution).
  • Windows: exclusive full screen (RSX_DISPLAY = fullscreen) can lose the picture or stall when you switch to another window.
  • The Vulkan renderer on Windows (RSX_BACKEND = vulkan) is experimental and slower than Direct3D 12.

Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.2.2 alpha

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@soyjxck soyjxck released this 11 Oct 20:13

Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.2.2 alpha, for Windows and macOS. One fix, and an important one: update if you play on Windows.

Downloads

  • dod3-recomp-v0.2.2-alpha-win64.zip: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
  • dod3-recomp-v0.2.2-alpha-macos-arm64.zip: Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 13 Ventura or newer.

Updating: on Windows, unzip over the old folder, or copy your game and gamedata folders and dod3.ini into the new one. On macOS, replace the app; the game's files in ~/Library/Application Support/Drakengard 3 Recompiled stay where they are. Saves and settings carry over.

Fixed

  • The game stopped with a black screen after about a quarter of an hour of the story (Windows, every earlier version). At the end of a level the picture went black and stayed black, and the game had to be closed. The game starts new threads all through a session: two for the physics of every level, two for every movie, one for each save, load and movie pre-load. The port has places for 64 at a time, and on Windows the place of a thread that had ended was never given to the next one, so the sixty-fifth could not start and the game waited for it without end. The places are used again now, and so is the memory of the threads' stacks. If it should ever happen again, dod3.log says so in a line of its own.
  • macOS was affected less: there only the save, load and movie pre-load threads kept their places, so the same stop was much further off. The fix is the same.

Nothing else has changed since 0.2.1 alpha: shorter loading screens, no long freeze as a level appears, and movies that play evenly.

What you need

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, a GPU with Direct3D 12 and a CPU with AVX2 (Intel Haswell / AMD Zen or newer); or a Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 13 or newer. About 16 GB of disk space (+10 GB for the Japanese voice pack).

Known issues

  • The fix was tested on both platforms by running the game from its start into the first chapter with 24 places for threads in place of 64, which the earlier versions cannot do, and by a test of 300 threads in the toolkit. A session of several hours has not been played on this build yet.
  • Windows: exclusive full screen (RSX_DISPLAY = fullscreen) can lose the picture or stall when you switch to another window. Use borderless, which covers the display the same way.
  • The loading changes of 0.2.1 were measured on the first chapter; later, larger areas have not been timed.

Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.2.1 alpha

@soyjxck soyjxck released this 11 Oct 18:20

Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.2.1 alpha, for Windows and macOS.

A native port of Drakengard 3 (PS3, US release BLUS31197, the 1.01 update), made by static recompilation. Nothing of the game is included: you need your own disc (dumped and decrypted), the game's 1.01 update package, and the DLC packages you own. The setup takes them from there. • dod3-recomp-v0.2.1-alpha-macos-arm64.zip: Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 13 Ventura or newer.

Updating: on Windows, unzip over the old folder, or copy your game and gamedata folders and dod3.ini into the new one. On macOS, replace the app; the game's files in ~/Library/Application Support/Drakengard 3 Recompiled stay where they are. Saves and settings carry over.

New since 0.2 alpha

  • Shorter loading screens. The game loaded for a few milliseconds of each frame and slept through the rest, so a loading screen lasted a fixed number of frames however fast the machine. It now loads through that idle time: on Windows the first chapter's loading screen takes about 3 seconds at 60 frames a second, where it took 4.5. The frame rate of the screen is unchanged. DOD3_LOAD_IDLE = 0 in dod3.ini gives the old behaviour back.
  • No long freeze as a level appears (Windows). The first frame of a level brings hundreds of textures and models at once; the renderer spent most of that frame in the graphics driver's allocator and in a slow copy. The first chapter's first frame took 0.8 seconds and now takes 0.2.
  • Movies play evenly. The pre-rendered movies run at 30 frames a second, but their frames came 25, 25 and 50 ms apart. They now come 33 ms apart, on both platforms.

macOS: the first package since 0.1.1. It also brings what 0.2 alpha brought to Windows: keyboard and mouse with direct mouse look, button prompts for the controller you hold, and a camera stick that turns at the console's speed at any frame rate. The zip can also be extracted with unzip now.

Fixed

  • After about six hours in one session a debug line began repeating in dod3.log without end, at nearly a megabyte a second. A long session can no longer fill the disk that way.
  • Started from a terminal, the game now ends on Ctrl-C and on kill.
  • A mistake in the translation of the native collision test (it had no visible effect on Windows).
  • The experimental Vulkan renderer on Windows could destroy a texture that a queued frame still used, and its first frame of a level had the same slow copy as Direct3D 12's.

Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.2 alpha

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@soyjxck soyjxck released this 11 Oct 11:58

Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.2 alpha, for Windows. The macOS package of this version will be added here when it is built; until then the Mac download is 0.1.1 alpha.

Download

  • dod3-recomp-v0.2.0-alpha-win64.zip: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.

Updating from 0.1.1: unzip over the old folder, or copy your game and gamedata folders and dod3.ini into the new one. Saves and settings carry over.

New since 0.1.1 alpha

  • Keyboard and mouse (Windows). The mouse turns the camera directly, with no stick imitated in between: no dead zone, no speed limit, no lag. WASD moves, the mouse buttons attack, Space jumps, E guards, Shift evades, Q locks on, the wheel switches target, Esc pauses. Every key can be changed in dod3.ini, and Settings > System Settings has a Mouse Sensitivity row. Keyboard and controller work side by side: use either at any moment.
  • Button prompts for your controller. The game shows the buttons of the pad you hold: Xbox, DualShock 4, DualSense, Switch, or your own keys on the keyboard, redrawn at four times the original's resolution. It follows the controller plugged in and whichever of pad and keyboard you touched last; Settings > System Settings > Button Prompts fixes it to one (PlayStation 3 is the game's original art).
  • The camera stick turns at the console's speed at any frame rate. The game turns the camera by an amount that shrinks with the frame time, so at 60 frames a second the stick turned it half as fast as on the console and at 120 a quarter. It now turns as it does at the console's 30. If you raised the game's own camera sensitivity to make up for it, lower it again; DOD3_CAMERA_SPEED = original in dod3.ini gives the old behaviour back.
  • A little faster in battles: the game's collision test, the hottest function in a fight, runs as native code (about 3 fps at 135).
  • Escape pauses instead of closing the game. Alt+F4 closes it.

Installing: unzip, run dod3.exe, add your files in the setup (any order; each is recognised by itself), Install, Start Game.

Settings, from the Graphics Settings, System Settings and Advanced Graphics pages in the game's own Settings menu (or dod3.ini): any internal resolution up to 4K and beyond, windowed / borderless / full screen, a frame-rate cap of your choice or uncapped, FXAA or MSAA, 16x anisotropic filtering, a wider field of view, the button prompts, the mouse's sensitivity, skipping the intro logos and movie, and pausing or muting in the background.

Known issues

  • A few places still show PlayStation 3 buttons whatever the prompt setting: "Press the START Button" on the title screen, "Press START to Skip" in cutscenes, the Circle on the dragon's icon and the pad pictured on the controller settings page.
  • The keyboard and mouse have been tested on foot; the dragon sections have not been checked with the mouse yet. The camera speed change does not apply to the dragon.
  • Loading a chapter takes a few seconds in one frame, and the first twenty seconds after it run at 40-60 fps while the area streams in; the pre-rendered movies play at 30 fps with uneven pacing; the Vulkan renderer (RSX_BACKEND = vulkan) is experimental.
  • The game has been tested on few machines (an RTX 4090 / i9-13900K at 4K, an M1 Pro at 1080p), so reports with dod3.log are welcome.

Drakengard 3 Recompiled 0.1.1 alpha, for Windows and macOS.

Downloads

  • dod3-recomp-v0.1.1-alpha-win64.zip: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
  • dod3-recomp-v0.1.1-alpha-macos-arm64.zip: Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 13 Ventura or newer.

New since 0.1 alpha

  • Controllers: Xbox, PlayStation (DualShock 4, DualSense) and Switch Pro pads, wired or Bluetooth, plugged in before or during the game. Buttons follow their positions (the bottom face button is Cross).
  • No stutter while shaders compile: a shader cache from a playthrough of chapter 1 ships with the game (cache\dxbc on Windows, inside the app on macOS), so most shaders are never compiled on your machine; the ones that are no longer block the renderer on Windows, where a new effect appears a frame or two late the first time instead.
  • MSAA costs far less on Windows: the renderer no longer resolves the whole multisampled frame for every one of the game's in-place post-processing reads (at 4K with MSAA 2x the GPU frame went from 7.3 ms to 4.5 ms).
  • No hitches from the log: the game's log (dod3.log) is written in the background; it used to stall the renderer for up to half a second when the disk or the antivirus was slow.
  • Windows: borderless is the display mode to use. Exclusive full screen stalls the renderer whenever Windows takes the focus (a controller notification is enough) and can lose the display on alt-tab.

Settings, from the Graphics Settings, System Settings and Advanced Graphics pages in the game's own Settings menu (or dod3.ini): any internal resolution up to 4K and beyond, windowed / borderless / full screen, a frame-rate cap of your choice or uncapped, FXAA or MSAA, 16x anisotropic filtering, a wider field of view, skipping the intro logos and movie, and pausing or muting in the background.

Known issues: loading a chapter takes a few seconds in one frame, and the first twenty seconds after it run at 40-60 fps while the area streams in; the pre-rendered movies play at 30 fps with uneven pacing; the Vulkan renderer on Windows (RSX_BACKEND = vulkan) is experimental.
