@sp00nznet sp00nznet released this 22 Oct 09:11

A fix for Red Alert 2's resolution setting on Linux and macOS, and an installer that tells you its version. Download the installer for your system below; you need your own copy of Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge.

Fixed

  • Linux and macOS: picking a resolution in Red Alert 2's own Options screen no longer freezes the game (#24, reported by @dkvdm). The game asks you to confirm the new mode in a box, and that box was drawn underneath the Options screen, so there was nothing to click. Now the box shows; click OK, and the menus come back at the new size with a second box asking whether to keep it. (Yuri's Revenge was never affected: it saves the size for your next battle instead.)

New

  • The installer shows its version in its window and title bar, and tells you when a newer release is out, with a button to download it (#25, suggested by @dkvdm). Offline, it says nothing.

Already built an earlier alpha? Run this installer and press Build my recomp: it fetches this version and the current pcrecomp (the fix needs both) and rebuilds; the steps that haven't changed are skipped.

The settings menu on Linux and macOS, larger resolutions, and fixes. Download the installer for your system below; you need your own copy of Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge.

New

  • F10 on Linux and macOS: the settings menu from the Windows build, drawn over the game: scaling, the bars beside the picture, fullscreen, HD vehicles, the game's resolution and mods. On a Mac keyboard, hold fn for the F keys; Option+Return is fullscreen.
  • Larger resolutions: on Linux and macOS the game's own Options screen now lists 1440p, 16:10, ultrawide and 4K, and your display's own size (#23). F10's list adds 21:9 (#21, by @andersbusk) and 16:10 on every platform.
  • macOS: the installer app is signed, so macOS no longer calls it damaged. Open it once, then choose Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

Fixed

  • A big battle could freeze the game with its sound looping (#20, found by @andersbusk).
  • Red Alert 2's main menus were sliced or off centre at widescreen sizes (#21, by @andersbusk).
  • Menus redrew 21 times a second instead of 30 (#22, by @andersbusk).

Already built an earlier alpha? Run this installer and press Build my recomp: it fetches this version and rebuilds; the steps that haven't changed are skipped.

A fix for the Windows build. Download the installer for your system below; you need your own copy of Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge.

Fixed: Setup stopped at "Compiling" when the newest Visual Studio product on the PC had no C++ tools, for example SQL Server Management Studio 21, or a Visual Studio without C++ installed next to one with it (#19, found and fixed by @andersbusk). Visual Studio 2019 or later with the C++ tools works.

If alpha.1 stopped there for you, run this installer and press Build my recomp: the steps already done are skipped.

The installer. Download the one for your system, open it, and it finds your copy of Red Alert 2 (Steam or the EA App, or point it at the folder), builds both games from it with a progress bar, and gives you Play buttons. Nothing from the game is in it or downloaded by it.

Windows RA2-Recomp-Installer-windows-x64.exe (SmartScreen asks first: More info, Run anyway)
Linux RA2-Recomp-Installer-linux-x64.tar.gz (unpack, run)
macOS (Apple silicon) RA2-Recomp-Installer-macos-arm64.zip (right-click the app, Open)

The first build takes 30 to 60 minutes and about 6 GB. This is an alpha: the installers are new, and the roadmap says what v0.1.0 still needs. Changes: CHANGELOG.md.

What's Changed

  • Native macOS: both games as arm64 Mac programs, no Wine by @cpressland in #16
